MOJO - Song of the Day - High In The Morning

Recommended Posts

Since I think most of us have a copy of MOJO by now, let's discuss the songs.

Let's start today off with High In The Morning - your thoughts?

High In The Morning

Composer Tom Petty

Boy that bottle belongs to the devil

Better leave it on the shelf

Could be the old man wants it for himself

Well it hurts my heart to see a young man fall

Hurt me to my bones

To see him high in the morning

And by evenin’ see him gone

Boy that woman belongs to the captain

Better let her go her way

Before the captain got somethin’ to say

Well it hurts my heart to see a young man fall

Hurt me to my bones

To see him high in the morning

And by evenin’ see him gone

Boy that power belongs to the devil

Better leave that power alone

Could be the devil gonna want it for his own

Well it hurts my heart to see a young man fall

Hurt me to my bones

To see him high in the morning and by evenin’

See him gone

To see him high in the morning and by evenin’

See him gone

When I first heard the title of the song, I thought it would be a joke like "You Make Me High" but luckily it isn't. It turned out to be my favorite right after "Don't Pull Me Over".

Just a great rock song, very clear and honest, with awesome guitar and piano parts again! I think Tom's voice also sounds very good on there, it's perfect for these kind of songs. They should do more in that style.

It's a song that could also be from the "Echo" album, reminds me a bit of some songs from the album and I absolutely love "Echo"!

A good 4/4 time standard, nothing more nothing less. The guitar parts played backwards give it a pretty cool 60s feel.

This was the one I initially thought was about Howie ("it hurts my heart to see a young man fall, [...] to see him high in the morning and by evening see him gone"), so I always feel a bit uncomfortable when I listen to it.

Not an outstanding track, not one of my favorites.

I totally agree that it could have come from "Echo".

This is one of my favourites off the album--to be honest, I don't skip any song but Candy! Which is pretty amazing in itself. This is one of my favourites off it though, I love the way Tom sings it, and the lyrics are great, too.
