Refugee 7 Report post Posted July 11, 2010 Since I think most of us have a copy of MOJO by now, let's discuss the songs. Let's start today off with No Reason To Cry - your thoughts? No Reason To Cry Composer Tom Petty All I’m wanting is to see you And to hold you once again And see the sun color your hair And see the tall grass blow in the wind Overcome me bitter sweetness Put me under a magic spell Overcome me all my sadness Lead me on and wish me well There’s no reason to cry There’s no reason to cry It’s alright So overtake me my sweet lover Let me kiss your honey lips Could be the only thing that’s real Could be when you get sad your memory slips There’s no reason to cry There’s no reason to cry It’s alright
weird monkey 0 Report post Posted July 11, 2010 Two words: George Jones If Tom wanted to do a whole album of old country western style songs in this vein, I'd be right there. Mike does a loving job on the lap steel. I don't know why I should be surprised, but the 2 don't automatically go together in my head. I would have expected the B Bender. johni 33 Report post Posted July 11, 2010 Standard TP ballad, but he has done better - should have said "sugar lips" rather than "honey lips"!
Sugar 0 Report post Posted July 11, 2010 Very sweet. Love the skill of Mike's slide guitar, the man can do anything! I like how it brings you to a calm place, then bam, I Should Have Known It hits you! But of course, we will talk about that tomorrow!
PumpkinBumpkin 1 Report post Posted July 11, 2010 I love it! The lyrics are very "country love song" and I like that.
Refugee 7 Report post Posted July 11, 2010 Wow, I thought I posted my review last night, guess I was more tired than I thought, LOL! I really like this song. Classic country and I like that. But, I feel like this song belongs more on the Mudcrutch album than Mojo. I'm not too keen on Tom's singing voice in the beginning of the song. Sort of makes me cringe. Then the rest of the song, it's alright. As always, the guitar, bass, drums and Benmont's piano is what makes the song.
BrandyZep 0 Report post Posted July 11, 2010 love this song...absolutly love the lap steel and the fact that this song is on a Heartbreakers record! wow! maybe it's a Mudcrutch left over ha ha ha love the music and the lyrics are growing on me. i'm with the crew that thinks the "honey lips" line is a bit umm cheesey...ha ha but Petty makes up for it with the next line "Could be when you get sad your memory slips" which i love the most....the line the delivery....everything about it....especially love that steel! oh yeah i think i already said that....if anybody's got a pic of that thing with or without Mike let me know! Marion 1,411 Report post Posted July 12, 2010 I usually love any country song they do because I love classic country but this song just doesn't do it for me. I don't buy the lyrics and all. They feel so forced. That honey lips line makes me cringe. Sorry Tom but I have to skip this one.
NightDriver 208 Report post Posted July 12, 2010 ...should have said "sugar lips" rather than "honey lips"! I think he should have said "puffy nips" rather than "honey lips"...LOL! Enough of that. I love Mike's lap steel work, but this is lyric-wise the weakest song on the album. Like Marion said before, I don't buy it.
DCAHNM 0 Report post Posted July 13, 2010 I usually skip this one. It kinda brings me down for some reason. Maybe it's too slow. Reminds me of some Bob Dylan song that I can't quite peg. It's okay, I guess.
Amber 70 Report post Posted July 13, 2010 Not my favorite either. I agree it is sort of depressing. Maybe he is trying to convince himself here? Anyway, the weakest song on the album, imo. I skip it.
wild1forever 152 Report post Posted July 14, 2010 For some reason, "Alright for Now" came to mind when I first heard this. Even though I agree that it's a little bit forced, I still like it.
Patty Petty 9 Report post Posted July 14, 2010 I loved this one instantly. Simply beautiful I think.
Wildflower15 0 Report post Posted July 14, 2010 I don't mind this. I like Ben's piano work and Mike's playing too. Like others I love the line "could be when you get sad your memory slips." I listen to the song to hear that line. Otherwise I think I'd skip it.
