MOJO-Song Of The Day-The Trip To Pirate's Cove

Recommended Posts

Since I think most of us have a copy of MOJO by now, let's discuss the songs.

Let's start today off with The Trip To Pirate's Cove - your thoughts?

The Trip To Pirate’s Cove

Composer Tom Petty

I took my few belongings

We headed out to Pirate’s Cove

In my buddy’s old Defender

We ran until the gas got low

We were flying close to heaven

Everything was starting to glow

Drivin’ into sunset

Rollin’ cause we had to roll

I think he was a preacher

But lord I can’t recall his name

He was running out of wind

But talking to me just the same

He said five ‘ll get you ten

But boy you’ve got to stay in the game

Yeah you got to let it ride

Or you’ve only got yourself to blame

We lost a wheel in Santa Cruz

So we partied with some motel maids

My friend said I don’t like mine

So what do you say we trade

She was a part of my heart

Now she’s just a line in my face

They let us go with a warning

Said we’d book you, but we don’t have a case

My friend said take her with you

To leave her here would be a crime

But let’s get outta Santa Cruz

All I got is a Canadian dime

I got a friend in Mendocino

And it’s gettin’ close to harvest time

And she was kinda cute

If a little past her prime

On the trip to Pirate’s Cove

On the trip to Pirate’s Cove

Drivin’ into sunset

Drivin’ into sunset

What a great song. It just takes me away, but not always to a happy place.

The lyrics are so strong and I love how Tom sings this song. I love the emotion that comes through.

And that guitar.....*sigh*

This song moves me like Crystal River does. I really have to pay attention when I'm driving and this song comes on.

I absolutely love this one, it reminds me very much of "Night Driver" on Highway Companion - musically and lyric-wise.

There are some overdubs on that song, and they fit very well. I just love the echo that's repeating Tom's words during the verses.

The line, she was kinda cute, but a little past her prime.....ha does that hit close to home for me! I like Benmont's stuff going on kind of in the background, but holding it all together at the same time. Drivn' in the sunset.....this song calms any traffic woes going on while driving. Cool vibe!

For guy, 'a little past her prime' could be 23...

And like any road trip, what really happened is just a little unclear, a little uncomfortable in retrospect, and a bit disjointed. It's a great song.

^Absolutely and very well put.

I always stumble across the drug reference in this song (suits the Doors-y style, too):

- We were flying close to heaven, Everything was starting to glow

- Rollin’ cause we had to roll

- I got a friend in Mendocino and it’s gettin’ close to harvest time

That probably explains why this road trip is unclear, uncomfortable and dis"joint"ed... ;)

Love this song. I'd already posted about how I like the lyrics, "She was a part of my heart, now she’s just a line in my face."

Dumb question :icon_redface:: Is "Pirate's Cove" a real place? I enjoyed seeing the references to Santa Cruz in the lyrics, but to my knowledge there isn't any place by that name in the Bay Area--unless you count a mini-golf course. LOL.

:icon_biggrin: You caught that!

Pirate's Cove is/was a nudist beach near Santa Cruz.

Edit: Actually it's near San Luis Obispo in Avila Bay, but close enough that it fits if one was driving from the Bay Area or thereabouts.

i love the tripyness of this song...and the echos of the vocals...the whole song moves and shimmers like watching those waves on the pacific ocean rolling in refecting the light of the sunset...or i how i imagine it would look since i've never been to the california coast....

Again, Tom's sense of humor is so cool. I smile every time I hear this verse.

We lost a wheel in Santa Cruz

So we partied with some motel maids

My friend said I don’t like mine

So what do you say we trade

The music is totally cool too. I think it's perfect that Pirate's Cove is a nudist beach. hahaha!

But forever more, I will think of Amylou going on and on about how Tom wrote a song about a pirate. She just didn't get it. You probably had to be there but it was too funny! :icon_laugh:

I would LOVE TO HEAR IT LIVE!!!!!! In fact at the Omaha show there was a Jolly Rogers flag above the stage - so I was thinking they would do it....

trippy is right.... many references to marijuana on this disc.

The line "Driving into sunset, rollin cause we had to roll" just popped into my head out of nowhere and so I listened...Lyrics are sooooo damn good!! Somewhere in between a memory and a dream 😉

I think this is one of the best songs from Mojo, I really enjoy the dream like and soothing quality of the music.

Did they ever do it live?
