MOJO-Song of the Day-Running Man's Bible

Recommended Posts

Since I think most of us have a copy of MOJO by now, let's discuss the songs.

Let's start today off with Running Man's Bible - your thoughts?

Running Man's Bible

Composer - Tom Petty

You’re with me tonight on this dark highway

We’ve run it together

So many times

We’ve run it for money

We’ve run it for music

We’ve run it to pay for our innocent crimes

I took on my father and I’m still walkin’

Took on all comers in some shape or form

And I see with the eyes of somethin’ wounded

Somethin’ still standing after the storm

Here’s one to glory and survival

And stayin’ alive

It’s the running man’s bible

I been next in line

I been next to nothin’

Been next to bystanders

Who shoulda said somethin’

It was not in my vision

It was not in my mind

To return from a mission

A man left behind

Here’s one to glory

And survival

And stayin’ alive

It’s the runnin’ man’s bible

I don’t speak of the times I’ve nearly died

I don’t speak of out lastin’ those who are gone

Or the things I’ve done

I care not to remember

Or the desperate measures

That might have been wrong

Honey here’s one to glory

Here’s to bad weather

And all the hard things

We’ve been through together

Here’s to the golden rule and survival

And to stayin’ alive

It’s the runnin’ man’s bible

Here’s one to glory and survival

And stayin’ alive

It’s the runnin’ man’s bible

What a fucking brilliant song!

This song is the one I hit repeat over and over.

Damn, that bass! The drums, extremely tasteful guitar notes and toss in Benmont's knack for making the song even better, wow. Ummm add Tom's voice and those lyrics and there you have it folks....perfection!

;)

This is just a great song and one of my favorites on the album. I know the lyrics but just sat here and read through them again. It's Tom's songwriting at his best and I love the funky groove and the tone of his voice when he sings it. I can't wait to see them play it live. I hope they keep it in the set.

My favorite lines....

I been next in line

I been next to nothin’

Been next to bystanders

Who shoulda said somethin’

This one took me some time to really get into it. When I first heard it on the Buried Treasure show, I wasn't too euphoric, but it has grown on me. I like the groove, the lyrics are perfect and the sound of the lead vocal (was it taped with a different mic or did it go through a voice processor?) fits perfectly - clean and dry.

Favorite line:

And I see with the eyes of somethin’ wounded

Somethin’ still standing after the storm

Since the first time I heard this on Buried Treasure I immediately loved it. Tom says it's about Howie I heard. I can see myself , if they play it at the concert, singing loud with my fist in the air....Here's one for glory...and survival!!!!!!

Here's one for glory and survival!!! i'm singing along too!!

i love this song too!! like the grove, love the lyrics....i can see where Howie is in there but to be honest i didn't even think about that til someone mentioned it....i love how Petty's songs can be so personal to himself and the Band and all of us at the same time....truely a master at his craft.....

I love this song, too. The A & R man said I DO hear a single with this one. Can't wait to sing along with it next week. But I have to say that to me it sounded like a song about Tom and Mike, partners in crime.

I love the lyrics on this song. Marion listed my favorite lines. Wow, those lines are really powerful. But really, they are all supreme and relevant. I think this is one of Tom's strongest songs lyrically on the album. (Haha, what am I saying? I could say that about First Flash Of Freedom and Trip To Pirate's Cove, too.)

And the music is fantastic. This has the type of keyboards I love from Benmont, that background Hammond that fills in all the gaps. I love the guitar tone along with the organ. According to the liner notes, Tom plays bass on this one. But really, I hardly hear any bass. And he also plays some lead guitar as well. I guess there were some overdubs on this one.

I like this one from the get go and it is still one of my 2 favorites, the other being Something good coming.

The LP really enhances Benmont's playing. I am hearing detailed stuff I don't hear on the CD or mp3s.
