Refugee 7 Report post Posted July 7, 2010 Since I think most of us have a copy of MOJO by now, let's discuss the songs. Let's start today off with First Flash of Freedom - your thoughts? First Flash Of Freedom Composer - Mike Campbell & Tom Petty On our first flash of freedom I called out your name Love hit us hard Like an overdue train We felt so much more than Our hearts could explain On our first flash of freedom A fist full of glory A suitcase of sin The language you dream in When you count to ten You go to the edge and you always give in On your first flash of freedom Down every canyon and mountain we fall And laugh at our shadows Tall on the wall Your brain is so full, but you can’t keep it all On your first flash of freedom Across ancient bridges Through a town with no name Across painted hills that No rich man can claim Run the wild mustangs That nothing could tame On your first flash of freedom On your first flash of freedom
Refugee 7 Report post Posted July 7, 2010 This song means so much to me. I feel like I've seen this song from birth to what it is today. It's had several transitions and to have witnessed all this is really something special. Everyone in the band is strong. I love hearing Steve on this song, it's so right up his alley. That jazz sort of feel to it. Ron's bass, wow! I love when I can feel the bass. As always Benmont just adds that right amount of keyboards that takes the song one step further. Tom's voice reminds me of some of my favorite songs off of The Last DJ. This song is all about Mike Campbell and that guitar. What a wonderful duo. I love how it changes directions, yet stays on course. Does that even make sense? I love closing my eyes and being taken away to a small club in LA just being in awe of the musicians that make this song so fabulous. And now to have it on cd, well...I'm a very happy girl. There is always something special about a Mike Campbell and Tom Petty song. This one is no exception.
Sugar 0 Report post Posted July 7, 2010 I think Tom has come up with some very thoughtful lyrics in this song. My favorite is the fistful of glory, suitcase of sin. It has a very intricate sound that all fits together beautifully.
NightDriver 208 Report post Posted July 7, 2010 An absolutely great track - very rich in variety. Allmann Brothers meet the Doors. It feels good to listen to it. First time I heard it was on my futuristic walkman (they call it mp3 player these days...), I was walking down the street, it was warm, the sun was shining. I'll never forget that feeling. "Smoke 'em if you got 'em!"
surfnburn 5 Report post Posted July 7, 2010 I love this song. Like Ref, I first heard the music in a little L.A. guitar bar. My basis of reference is that, so my experience is a little different. The freedom of that guitar is awesome. Tom crafted wonderful lyrics that really capture the essence of the music. If you close your eyes and listen to this song, you will hear San Francisco in 1967. LizzieB 0 Report post Posted July 7, 2010 Whenever this song starts, I think I'm going to end up skipping it, I guess because I know it is a very long song. But I'm always mesmerized as soon as it gets going and I'm sad when it ends. It's an absolutely excellent song, from the music to the playing to the lyrics. I love these lines: Down every canyon and mountain we fall And laugh at our shadows Tall on the wall Your brain is so full, but you can’t keep it all On your first flash of freedom
HeartbreakerFan 27 Report post Posted July 7, 2010 Glad you all like this song--this one is a definite skip for me because I just think it drags and seems to go on forever.
Marion 1,411 Report post Posted July 8, 2010 I love this song. The music to me is brilliant and it carries me away. Like Ames and Linda I have a history with this song and watched it morph into what it has become. I think it's grand and Mike Campbell is an amazing talent. Tom wrote some perfect lyrics for it too. It took me awhile to figure out if I liked the lyrics but then one day it all came together for me and I loved them. When you wake up with the music and lyrics playing in your head it's right. johni 33 Report post Posted July 11, 2010 Flowing, swirling, magical - one of this album's classics! Just one teeny, tiny point, shouldn't it be "First FLUSH of Freedom" - or am I missing something? Maybe its a "pot-ah-to / pot-ay-to" thing?
