nurktwin 2,143 Report post Posted November 29, 2009 i don't use ice, i drink everything at room temp, except for beer. the WD just asked me why the ice cube trays are always empty and showed me an empty tray. she claims that she makes the ice and it's fine for a week, but then it disappears!!!! no ice, no water or anything. i told her she's been sleepwalking and making a scotch and water during the night and then goes back to bed not remembering a thing, or the ghost of the old man we bought the house from is back and making drinks himself....lol. is there anything to this? or is my fridge about ready to take a shit? jawallac 48 Report post Posted November 30, 2009 I know if I put liquid stuff into ice cube trays (cider, ginger tea, etc) and let it sit there for a long time, it does get significantly smaller. Full cubes can and do dwindle. Evaporation?
angelic_22 0 Report post Posted November 30, 2009 (edited) The Ice Cube Fairy came!!!!!! (Check your fridge for a quarter) OK seriously, I dont think there is any chance the ice evaporated. Even in a vacuum, water ice is pretty resistant to sublimation (going from a solid to a gas). It has to melt first. So I'm betting on the Ice Cube Fairy. Did you leave her cookies and milk? IF not, watch out, she'll come back and steal all your condiments. Edited November 30, 2009 by Relic

emmie 2 Report post Posted November 30, 2009 Get a new fridge with an icemaking machine in it for handy, dandy cubes at a touch of a button going straight into your glass. You'll never look back lol.
nurktwin 2,143 Report post Posted November 30, 2009 i removed the icemaker, takes up too much room. i'd rather have food than frozen water.
weird monkey 0 Report post Posted November 30, 2009 While sublimation does occur, having your ice disappear in a week's time is unreal. Try doing a controlled experiment; say you put water in a small container (uncovered) and put it somewhere in your freezer where no one will bother it. Check it in a week's time and see if the water has disappeared. I did read this on a physics forum: "at a certain pressure and a certain temperature, ice will nearly instantly change from the solid state to the gas state. I recommend looking at water's phase graph and see where on the graph it would happen. I believe the y axis is pressure and x axis is temperature. The graph should be divided into 3 regions, liquid, gas and solid. Look for the border between solid and gas and that is the region where sublimation occurs" But it's highly unlikely that a household freezer would suddenly begin operating at something close to whatever that perfect state might be and 'disappear' (turn to water vapor). emmie 2 Report post Posted November 30, 2009 i removed the icemaker, takes up too much room. i'd rather have food than frozen water. Oh you must have a much different type of fridge then us. Our icemaker is built into the door and takes no room away at all from freezer space.
Ladywiz 4 Report post Posted December 3, 2009 If you DO think a ghost is involved try putting empty trays in and see if they magically are filled during the night!
gatorlily 3 Report post Posted December 7, 2009 You haven't heard about the burglar going around, breaking into homes and stealing ice cubes? They are calling him the Cube Thief. You need to fingerprint your trays for important evidence.
nurktwin 2,143 Report post Posted December 7, 2009 GL we don't have that around here. if anything moves at night, it's shot!! WIZ, no ghosts
