Refugee 7 Report post Posted August 12, 2009 Neil Young will be named the 2010 MusiCares Person of the Year next January for his artistic accomplishments and philanthropic work. The 20th anniversary gala--featuring a reception, silent auction, dinner and star-studded concert--will celebrate the singer/songwriter/filmmaker Jan. 29, just two days prior to the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards, which airs live Jan. 31 on CBS at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Past recipients include James Taylor and Brian Wilson, among others. "Neil has set a standard of artistic integrity and iconoclastic creativity for more than four decades, and his achievements have been matched by his unwavering humanitarianism," MusiCares Foundation CEO Neil Portnow said in a press release. "He is a shining example of how music people offer their creative gifts to the world, and how they also give back through their commitments to charitable endeavors." Young, who started his career in 1963 as part of The Squires, has created classic albums alone and with other projects, including Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. The legendary musician and co-founder of Farm Aid recently released "Neil Young Archives Vol. 1 1963-1972," a 10-disc box set chronicling his earliest recordings, including studio cuts and live tracks, complete with a hardbound book, mp3s and his first film, "Journey Through the Past." Along with offering financial and medical assistance to music people in times of need, MusiCares also focuses the resources and attention of the music industry on human-services issues that impact the well-being of the music community, according to the organization's website.
