Nashville rock band the Kings of Leon today announced dates for a 30-plus-date North American arena trek this fall. The announcement comes just as their 2008 album "Only By the Night" has been certified platinum by the RIAA -- the first U.S. platinum certification for a band that has sold millions internationally.

After a July 31 appearance on the Today Show, the tour will kick off August 7 with the band's headlining stint at Lollapalooza in Chicago and continue through October. They will also perform on the "Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien" on August 24.

"Only By the Night" hit No. 5 on the Billboard 200, while single "Sex On Fire" topped Billboard's Modern Rock Chart and won a Grammy for best rock performance by a duo or group. The platinum certification is awarded for shipments of at least a million, and the album has sold 959,000 units in the U.S. to date according to Nielsen SoundScan.

As Billboard Magazine previously reported (cover story, Feb. 21), the Kings of Leon became international superstars before making a real impact at home -- "Only By the Night" sold millions of copies worldwide and went Platinum in multiple countries before breaking the 400,000 mark in the U.S.

"The market has come around to the band," RCA VP/GM Tom Corson told Billboard earlier this year. "It's just their time. The band has put the work in over the years, they have their finest album to date, and consumers are into it."

I LOVE them, but I'm still super ticked off at them for cancelling their Sacramento show this August in order to play Vegas instead. I understand that's where the money is at, but I'm still bitter I won't be able to see them...and that Ticketmaster didn't refund the service charge. Grr!

Let me get this straight - they canceled a concert at their option (they could have played it but decided against it after tickets were sold) and then ticketmaster keeps the service charge?

That sounds criminal.

They are playing the forum here. Not my favorite venue, but I would like to see the band perform. Wonder if they will actually show or just play Vegas instead? ;)

^ yeah, that sounds pretty bad Katie....I would be pissed too. I just checked on the Forum tix left and they all suck...I don't really want to sit in the Colonnade. Maybe they'll release some closer to the date...

I want to see them so bad, but didn't get Houston tickets in time. I missed them last year at a mid-sized venue in Houston. I knew they would be moving up to arenas any time, so I was really sad to miss that chance. Hopefully I'll see them somewhere someday. They are one of my favorite bands.
