Refugee 7 Report post Posted May 18, 2009 LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A prolonged earthquake shook the Los Angeles area on Sunday, the U.S. Geological Survey said, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. The USGS, which described the earthquake as "moderate," said the magnitude was 5.0. The quake was 8.4 miles deep and centered near the community of Lennox, about 10 miles southwest of downtown Los Angeles. Residents across a wide area of Los Angeles felt a sharp rumbling that lasted 10 to 15 seconds at about 8:39 p.m. (11:39 p.m. EDT). A spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department said there were no immediate reports of damage or injury.
Beamish 0 Report post Posted May 19, 2009 It felt like just another tremor to me, but people down in Torrance said it felt pretty heavy-duty there.

Square One 0 Report post Posted May 19, 2009 Just had another one!.....why do we keep having these little quakes? Let's hope it's just releasing the pressure of the fault and not gearing us up for a big one..... !

Square One 0 Report post Posted May 19, 2009 ^ Yeah...they've just been these baby ones, but we've had about 3 in just a couple of weeks...hmm....
Beamish 0 Report post Posted May 22, 2009 ^ Releasing the pressure is usually good- it's what prevents bigger quakes. The fault line that's reputed to be the most dangerous is on the East coast- it hasn't trembled for almost 100 years, and New York City is sitting right on it. Echosoftom 3 Report post Posted May 22, 2009 Hmmm! Another one. You're right Cathy, that's three in about a week and in the same area. That makes me a little nervous. I wonder what the experts are Cal Poly are saying.
