Dog Protects Fallen Comrade (Dog) in New York City

May 15 - A German Shepherd is making news in New York City after the dog ran to the rescue of a fallen comrade on one of the country's bizziest highways.

A dog was hit by a car, and lay bleeding in the middle of the Major Deegan Expressway.

When authorities arrived on scene, they were unable to reach the injured animal because of the German Shepherd mix, who warded them off by lunging at them when they got close.

A video captured at the scene, shows the German Shepherd running circles around the injured dog, and lunging at animal control officers when they attempted to reach the sick animal.

"It's possible ... there was a social bond," said Dr. E'Lise Christensen, a veterinarian and board certified animal behaviorist.

Animal control were finally able to reach the fallen animal and take her for treatment.

As it turns out, the injured dog was offspring of the dog who protected it fiercely, which would explain why she had acted the way she did.

Both dogs live together in the Bronx, and are now reunited.
