Refugee 7 Report post Posted February 25, 2009 What is your opinion of Lent? Do you follow it? Do you give something up? If you do, what are you giving up this year?

Starfish 0 Report post Posted February 25, 2009 I always got a kick out of the kids at school who would give up things like watermelon (out of season) or liver (ugh) - I liked hearing that our (former) church was asking the kids in ccd to not just give something up, but to also commit to doing something helpful during Lent. SingsInFrench 262 Report post Posted February 25, 2009 I'm not religious and don't observe Lent. I like starfish's comment about doing something helpful, rather than giving up meat on Friday's - more meaningful and constructive.
Dynabeat Tim 0 Report post Posted February 25, 2009 I hate how it sticks to black pants. It seems you never know its there until, you get under a black light. It makes a dark sweater look bad too. And yes, I have given up wearing dark sweaters on stage if I know before hand that the club has a black light among its stage lights. I had one of those special lent brushes once, but I lost it long ago.

Patty Petty 9 Report post Posted February 25, 2009 Long ago, not only did I give up lent as my something to give up, I also gave up being a Catholic.. too hypocritical for me.

Square One 0 Report post Posted February 25, 2009 ^ LOL - Tim I grew up with it, so it's sort of ingrained in me, whether I practice or not. My son goes to a Catholic school, so he is participating in it and I'm okay with it. They do teach him about giving back more... rather than "giving something up". wild1forever 152 Report post Posted February 25, 2009 Great question for me because I just returned from getting my ashes...from an entirely too enthusiastic priest, lol. My favorite amusement on Ash Wednesday is to keep track of the number of people who tell me I have dirt on my forehead, compared with the number of people who say, "Oh crap, that's right! I need to go to church today." :icon_laugh: I agree with SquareOne and Nancy that the emphasis has shifted to "giving back" more than "giving up." I try to abide by that; I also try to give up a bad habit and replace it with a good one. This year I'm trying to give up complaining and replace it with gratitude.
