Page's Manager Defends Led Zeppelin Tour

Jimmy Page's manager has defended the guitarist's decision to reform Led Zeppelin for a world tour without frontman Robert Plant.

The legendary band reunited in December 2007 for a one-off reunion show in London.

But Plant opted out of plans for a subsequent comeback, leaving the other bandmembers, Page, John Paul Jones and Jason Bonham - son of their late drummer John - to audition replacements.

The decision to reform without Plant has provoked a storm of criticism from both the public and other members of the rock community.

But Page's manager, Peter Mensch, is adamant the group is capable of surviving without Plant.

He says, "People don't really understand it. Jimmy Page has been playing guitar professionally since he was 16 years old. Jimmy Page likes being a musician. That's what he does! He doesn't want to be a race car driver or a solicitor.

"They decided that if they could find a singer that they thought would fit their bill - whatever their bill was at this stage in their career - that they'd make a record and go on tour... That's what Jimmy Page does."

Mensch also refused to be drawn on the identity of possible new singers for the band, with replacements rumored to include Aerosmith's Steven Tyler.

He adds, "I can't comment on any rumours right now. It's gonna be a long and difficult process. And we're not soliciting people! So don't call me about it!"

I wish they'd get Dave Grohl (that was Kay's idea) or Jack White (except he's in enough bands right now).

Jimmy was looking for a singer when he found Robert. More power to him if he wants to get a different singer.

I love Robert's (screech's) voice--he doesn't really screech in my opinion and was recently named best rock voice.

Robert Plant Named Greatest Voice In Rock

January 3rd, 2009 2:00pm EST

Robert-Plant-r03.jpgFormer Led Zeppelin star Robert Plant has picked up his second major award of the new year after he was named the Greatest Voice in Rock in an online radio network poll.

Plant, who was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the Queen's New Year's Honors list for his services to music and the entertainment industry, has topped Planet Rock's new The Greatest Voice in Rock Top 40 ahead of Freddie Mercury and Mercury's Queen replacement Paul Rodgers.

To me it is pointless to reform Led Zeppelin without Robert Plant. Jimmy should be forced to have to call the band without Robert something else, but I don't think Robert really cares since he is enjoying recording with Alison Krauss.

When I saw Journey with the wanna be singer, I almost cried several times because no one can sing a Journey song like Steve Perry. No one should even try to mimic or come close to sounding like Steven Ray Perry--another sacred voice in rock.

Robert the greatest voice in rock?

For me, that honor goes to Roger Daltrey. I can think of SO many other voices that rate in my top 10 before Mr. Plant. He has a very "unique" voice, I will give him that.

Refugee, I suppose it is good that we all have different opinions as to who we think can sing the best (that way they all have a chance to sell their music).

I have always thought Robert had a great voice, and there are some songs that he has recorded that his voice is spectacular and beautiful. Robert would be my number one pick for rock voice; Tom would be my second pick for rock voice. Oddly enough I think Roger Daltry was in the top ten of the poll, but I have never liked his voice (just to point out that it is good and realistic that everyone doesn't like the same thing.)
