Springsteen Gives Clothes Off His Back to Charity

Generous rocker Bruce Springsteen helped to raise over $100,000 for wounded war veterans on Wednesday when he threw his leather jacket in a charity auction.

The legendary star took part in the New York Comedy Festival for the Bob Woodruff Foundation, which also saw appearances by funnyman Ricky Gervais, TV presenter Regis Philbin and Saturday Night Live comic Darrell Hammond.

But Springsteen was the highlight of the show, riding onstage on his 1994 Harley-Davidson motorcycle, which he was donating to the sale.

Guest auctioneer Whoopi Goldberg helped get proceedings underway, but when bidding on the powerful motorbike stalled at $40,000, kind-hearted Springsteen literally sold the clothes off his back - taking off the leather jacket he was wearing to boost the sale. The two items eventually sold for $70,000.

But that wasn't all Springsteen gave away - CNN correspondent Christiane Amanpour handed over $50,000 for The Boss' autographed guitar, reports the New York Post's Page Six.

that's great. now why can't the government put up some money for the vets like they did for the banks????? NO we have to do it on own our own, but they used our money to bail out the banks! and next they will bail out the auto industry with $50B. wtf is going on?

^ It's not just veterans- remember how soldiers had to ask their families to scrape up the cash for body armor ? What kind of country sends soldiers to fight without armor ?! Glad at least Bruce gives a crap about the people who risked their lives to defend our country.

I agree, nurk! This whole bailout pisses me off. That money could have been used for so many other things that are more important. Kudos to people like Bruce and Whoopi that care enough to do things like this.
