Question of the Day - 06/04/08

Recommended Posts

Not personally, but when the kids were small and I was doing a lot of shopping, I used to let them open and eat a box of animal crackers while we walked through the store (to be paid for at the register, of course).

I used to work with a woman who would grab a banana or a bunch of grapes to entertain her kids while she shopped, hide the evidence and then brag about not paying for it. That drove me crazy.

Like Nancy, once in a while I'd give my daughter something while we were shopping. I've done it for myself on occasion because I was dehydrated or a little hypoglycemic... It all gets paid for at the check-out stand.. They can scan a wrapper...

Well last week I was buying green olives and I ate one before I got to the check out, but that's about it I think...Oh no, I once at a grape as well.

I try and go to the store full so I'm not tempted by the bags of chips, mountains of candy, and ice cream screaming my name. I may taste something when I'm buying bulk foods to determine if it's fresh.

Now I have this former roommate with the last name of Lawless. He lived up to it. He would go to Sun Harvest (like Wild Oats) and eat from the binds. Called it lunch. I can tell you stories. He would do situps so he could put meat down his pants (before I knew him). He would pour oil out of the cheap bottles and fill it with the best olive oils. I mainly heard the stories. The people working there would see him do it and he would smile at them and wink. When I saw him at the store I walked away from him. The only time he ever got caught, he talked his way out of it when the police took him away. He also moved to Germany with his Italian wife, faked a back injury, and collected disability for over a year. When I knew him he was separated from wife and lived under a tarp thrown over a jungle jim in the backyard.

Can you say grifter?

Kira, I'm the same way. If I go to the grocery store hungry, I come out with all sort or nonsense.

I have nibbled a grape or two while I'm walking around. And there have been a few times when I'm really hungry and I'll open something and snack on it while I'm walking around, but I pay for it when I get to the check stand.

OK, true confessions time ... once when I was a kid I broke into a box of cereal before we got to the register so that I could get at the toy surprise inside - and, yeah, because I wanted a chocolate fix and the Cocoa Puffs were the nearest thing in the cart.

More recently, I've been known to sneak a few nuts from the bulk bins into my mouth while I'm filling up a bag to buy.
