Mudcrutch - Song of the Day - The Wrong Thing To Do

Recommended Posts

Well, my daddy took me campin'

Out under the stars

Left me by the fire

While he hit the bars

And I broke my finger

On a trailer hitch

Mamma called daddy

That son of a bitch, alright

Well a hundred miles to go

You draggin' your ass

I'm in a Japanese car

That ain't gonna last

And you forever drivin'

On the wrong side of the road

Wearing dungarees

That your mother stole

(Chorus)

Well my mamma loved me

But my daddy don't

I'm tryin' to work it all out

But I probably won't

I got a woman waiting

At the top of the stairs

It's the wrong thing to do

But I don't care

---

Well she was blond and tall

She was 23

Brought into the world

To get the best of me

And she never paid back

Half what she stole

She wanted my money

So I gave her my soul

(Chorus)

---

Well I was flying half mast

On the 4th of July

In a bar in Lake City

With a western tie

And I was thinkin' hard

About changin' my name

And headed for Miami

When the daylight came

(Chorus)

Here's another song that I could easily see being a Heartbreaker tune, but thank goodness it's not.

Once again, great lyrics, great beat and just a very catchy tune.

I love how Tom sings - "it's the wrong thing to do....but...I...don't care....

*sigh*

I wonder if that song is autobiographic....Love the lyrics

At the Malibu show I recall one of the Toms saying that 'It was all true' just before playing this song.

I do believe it is autobiographical, but only Tom would know for sure :)

When Tom sings the line 'with a western tie' I think I hear a smirk, and I agree that the way he sings 'I dont..... care' - the timing of it - is wonderful.

I had half a thought of suggesting that they play this song as part of our annual ethics training classes here at work! "Its the wrong thing to do , but I don't care" just seems so fitting.....

I love this song and it's Pete's favorite too. Every time we get in the car he makes me play it over and over.

Every time I hear this song I can picture the whole thing so clearly in my head. Growing up, I had a friend who's father was just like Tom's dad, drinking all the time and he was a mean drunk and thought it was funny to do mean things to people and then laugh and laugh. I still remember his horrible laugh and how mean he could be to the kids and his wife. (((Shutter))) It was awful to see but I loved my friend so I was a around a lot and saw a lot. I feel for Tom and understand why he can't get over it. That kind of thing leaves a lot of scars.

Anyway, I love this song and I think it's brilliant and really upbeat considering what he's saying.

How sad, Marion.

I know, this song makes me feel so bad for Tom because you can feel

his pain. And yet, there's an energy to it that just makes you know

that everything's gonna be okay in the end!

He has such a knack for making you FEEL the lyrics, doesn't he? That's what separates him from all the rest.

My husband's dad did the same thing, and he always snorts when he hears those lines. Funny how life is.

It's a darn good song to boot, and yes it would be my favorite regardless.
