Question of the Day - 03/06/08

I don't know...It would depend on the scenario...

I remember when the "Hanoi Hilton" movie came out there was some discussion about it. I think the military tells soldiers to go ahead and talk so they can come back to fight the next war. I've heard that the military regulates the information they give solders for this reason. I wouldn't have any information....that's for sure...lol

There are other kinds of torture like what happened at Abu Ghraib, which turned out to be criminal. In that case I think it's about the mental state captors and dysfunctional breakdown of the group. I'd make up anything they wanted to hear and hope there was a photographer in the bunch.

I'm sure everyone has a limit. I actually had to do a school in the Navy where they put you through not only evasion techniques and living off the land while your evading, but also through resistance techniques in a P.O.W. camp setting. Quite an experience. I think I did alright, but those hits to the face got a little hard to deal with towards the end of the school.

I really have no idea what I'd do in that situation. I'd like to think I'd have the courage to not talk.

I just read John McCain's book "Faith of My Fathers" where he is very descriptive about his 5 1/2 years as a POW at the Hanoi Hilton. There is a code that the military have and they are taught to not release any information just name, rank, and birth date. So many men were brutally tortured daily for years on end. Some would eventually break and feel guilty for letting down their country and fellow officers. It was very uncomfortable to read but interesting at the same time to understand what our servicemen went through in Vietnam.

Thinking and reading about this makes me sad - trying to imagine what it would be like and the fact that our administration has endorsed these practices. I don't know what I would do.

I'm a pretty strong person, I could probably withstand quite alot of torture. You know what though? Odds are they'll still kill you even if you DO tell.

i honestly believe i would NOT talk. as emmie said, they are going to kill you anyway when they get the info they want. and after many years of torture from the WD, i think i'll be fine.....lol.

complex kid.....i agree with you that there is a military code, only give your name, rank and serial #. but the problem is that the USA goes by the rules and the countries we are fighting don't. they don't follow or care about the rules of the geneva convention. none of the countries we fought in the past 100 years obey the rules, and after we beat them, we pay your tax dollars to build those countries into resorts, new roads, bridges, homes and so on, when we can't even take care of ourselves!!!! this is a HUGE problem with me, if we take care of our country 1st and then there is money left over (lol), then we can help the countries that side with us (and not many do).

girl at the high school dance.....i know that joining the armed forces is a great thing to do and probably the most honorable thing a person can do for their country. i also rank men and women getting married and having a family at the top too. i have a lot of friends that went to nam, some came home and some didn't. some were in the navy seals and never really talked about training and what really went on, and some did when they got home. after reading your post, i was thinking about the so called slaps or punches you recieved during training. i know that makes you stronger and prepares you for the future, but is it right? certainly not in america, but's it ok for the gov, because they now own you. hope i said that right....lol.
