Question of the Day - 02/19/08

the first "famous" person I met was Dave Brubeck. Who I didn't know was famous. I was 19 and my band was playing in Texas, (how a bunch of Michiganders rounded up in Texas is a chapter in itself, anyway). I was use to people coming up to the band and saying they had a friend that wanted to set in. Usually its some guy or gal that can't sing, but think they can. So the band decided we wouldn't let anyone set in. We're playing at a place in Odessa, Texas at this really nice restaurant thats at the top of this hotel. This guy comes up and says "do you know Dave BrubecK" I say no, This guy goes, well he's in the audience, and I say "oh" and the guy goes "he's a piano player" well theres this baby grand on the stage next to us, and I say " well we can't let him get up, cause management frowns on that sort of thing" well the guy sorta smiles and says no, no, he just wanted to let you know he was enjoying your music". I thank him, and this guy goes and sits back down. I turn around and say to the guys in the band "anybody ever hear of Dave Brubeck ?" and the drummer says, "I think my mom has some of his records"

but I did go kind of wild when I met Al Jardine of the BeachBoys in Detroit outside of the fox theatre...before the concert.....I was driving down a side street and out comes the band to their limo ( they had just had a soundcheck) and I see all of them climbing in, and the last one to come out is Al.......and I stop my car, and yell out the window "Hey Al Jardine......I'm your biggest fan" well he comes over to the truck and shakes my hand, and I introduce myself and the woman that I am with...but instead of saying her name "Sue" I call her "Lynda", which was Al's ex-wife's name, and he had just gotten divorced.....he goes "nice to meet you"....she goes "me too, but that's not my name"......and he asks us if we have tickets for the show.( we did ) Anyway I didn't even have paper for an autograph, but I always thought it was nice that he came over to the car. I always wondered what he told the guys in the limo when he got back "yea, that guy doesn't even know who he is out with " LOL geez these two stories could've been a chapter, sorry bout the long answer !!

I'd like to say I wouldn't do it, but some of us remember how excited I was when I met Mike Campbell the first time. I didn't actually jump up and down and scream, but I was inside and Sharon had a bruised arm from my squeezing it so hard. I think if I ever met Tom or Robert Plant, I'd have a hard time containing myself.

^LOL Nurk and Ryan. I'll be there June 22; I expect banners and balloons (or something stronger) to celebrate the meeting.

I'm not a screamer and would probably just say something simple like "thank you for what you do." I lived in Athens, GA for a few years and occasionally cross paths with members of R.E.M. After you're in town for a bit, you 'get used' to them... I saw Michael Stipe at breakfast, the local health food co-op, a coffeehouse. Writing this it sounds like he was everywhere and that it was 'cool;' then it was matter-of-fact. (OK, well, not the first time.)

Not sure I'd scream - but would definitely be "in awe" if I met Tom Petty, David Gilmore or Crosby/Stills/Nash.

Say - here's a funny story. My hubby was waiting on a flight in LAX (back in the early 90's) when a gaggle of "huge" guys walked into the terminal surrounding Kevin Costner. He walked right into the middle of the muscle mass, stuck out his hand to Kevin and said, "Say dude, I sure liked that baseball movie of yours." Costner, stunned, reluctantly accepted the hand shake and blurted out, "Uhhhhh - you want an autograph?" My hubby said, "No thanks" and went on his merry way. I laughed so hard I thought I'd tinkle my britches!! I just love my man ... he's so laid back, he's horizontal!
