Ex Petty Co-Manager Elliott Roberts Passed Away

Recommended Posts

Roberts bankrolled the MCA lawsuit.  Petty credits him with giving him the pivotal career advice to focus on quality, not commercial success.  He told Petty all his albums couldn't be hits "but they can all be good." "Focus on the product."

Per the Warren Zanes book Roberts also helped renegotiate the MCA deal to give Petty creative control, and arranged his tour with Farm Aid appearance and subsequent tour with Bob Dylan.

Oh, no... such sad news. He was a significant influence for good in the lives of many fine musicians (from all I've read / seen).

Thank you for recommending TPATH play with Bob Dylan for Farm Aid  and helping sort out some of Neil Young's legal issues.

In the interview above with Warren Zanes, he says he saved the band by changing the financial split from an even division to one favoring Petty.  He said the resentment Petty would have otherwise come to feel would have surely split up the band, and that in the end everyone came out ahead under the new arrangement (which is what he explained to the somewhat disgruntled Heartbreakers at the time).
