Five ways - How to cure a hangover

Recommended Posts

If celebrating got the best of you over New Year's, today's hangover headache can ruin your day. Not to worry. The National Headache Foundation in Chicago has some good advice to get you through the day -- and avoid or lessen the suffering that comes with hangovers in the future.

1. Drink fluids with minerals and salts: This will offer relief from dehydration. A cup of broth or bouillon will replace fluids and won't cause nausea. Other good bets: sports drinks or water.

2. Have some honey: Honey, which supplies fructose that helps the body metabolize alcohol, can reduce hangover symptoms. Try two tablespoons on a cracker before or after drinking. Also, tomato juice, fruit and fruit juices should help the body burn alcohol faster.

3. Drink coffee: Caffeine acts as a vasoconstrictor and eases dilated blood vessels, so it could lessen headache symptoms and duration. Drink a cup when you wake up.

4. Take ibuprofen: While aspirin is OK, ibuprofen is usually less irritating to the stomach and can also ease headache pain.

5. Next time: Eat greasy food first to help line the intestines, causing slower alcohol absorption. Sip drinks slowly. Mixed drinks with fruit or vegetable juices likely will have less effect than straight alcohol. Avoid red wine, which can lead to headaches.

Hair of the dog that bit you. In the day it used to be a shot of whisky with peppermint schnapps floating on top. Also doubled as mouthwash. Glad those days are gone.
