I was never quite sure about the band's first trip into Seattle.  There's never been a Seattle stop shown on these Tom Petty lists of gigs for 1977.  It has Yakima by itself, but there's no way the band comes up here and only plays Yakima.   Since the one gig in Washington State for 1977 shown on the list is opening for J Geils Band, I looked for their tour stops in 1977 and found some!

I'm still not sure that was the first time in town. I'm thinking they were here in the spring of 1977 playing a smaller venue than the Paramount.  But I have no evidence.  The Paramount did have this series of "Rising Stars" concerts for $1.  I went to several of them, but not Tom Petty.  If they had one, I missed it.

not sure where you are pulling this from but I noticed in the book "Tom Petty: Rock ‘n’ Roll Guardian"  there was a pretty good listing of tour dates from the 70s up to the publishing date...

Thanks for the heads up.  I'm pulling this from hundreds of hours of research and my own meticulous, curious and persistent nature, which will now be directed toward a copyright infringement lawsuit.

wasn't implying you were stealing this from the book. Just giving you a heads up and I doubt that there would be a lawsuit....   If a moderator wants to delte my post here and above to avoid appearances of impropriety feel free to have at it..

I LOVE that you done all this hard work compiling this (and can't for my life believe there can be anything wrong with listing neutral facts like dates or sets). Keep it up, please! I would love a section here at the Farm with the complete list too, when you're done!

I think the point is that this is Miami Steve's own list and not pulled from anywhere. Since there is not a definitive/correct list anywhere someone would have to painstakingly create a comprehensive list using research from many sources.

Either way... lets stick to the list and not going back and forth on legality. A separate thread on that topic may be an idea if there is enough interest.

My site might have some old tour reviews for specific dates if you use the search function.
Because there's so much hosted, the browsing function doesn't work very well, but search is alright.
The site's been super slow lately for some reason. Anyway, feel free to use it if you want to do any extra searching there.
I don't have any personal documents about tour dates. Everything is hosted on the site.
Maybe if I ever have free time I can work up something that would operate better, but I just don't have the time or money.

Good luck with your work! It sounds tedious, but I'm glad someone is doing it!

Regarding the 1977 Yakima date. My little brother Bob attended (he was 16). That night I asked what he thought. He said "J. Geils sucked,"  they left before the band finished, "...but the opening act was great, Tom Petty."  We'd never heard of him but Bob bought Petty's debut album the next day. A few years later we started our own band and covered American Girl.  Bob continued, "I felt badly for him.  He was a little laid back and some people started booing and screaming J. Geils!"

Hahaha.
