The band’s second round-year roadshow hasn’t tied on the same bells and whistles as the band’s 30th ann’y roadshow in 2006 — when Stevie Nicks was traveling with the group and Pearl Jam was opening — but on the simplistic stage Petty was affable and sharp, the band was game for its greatest hits playlist and a few extended jams showed a strain of spontaneity still pumping through the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers.

“Tonight we are gonna look at the last 40 years like it’s one side of a big record, and drop the needle all over it,” said Petty, donning his patented suit, flopping hairdo and sunglasses-at-night look.

As one would expect, the Petty solo rock smashes (these days relegated to adult contemporary radio) “Free Fallin'” and “I Won’t Back Down” were sweeping sing-alongs, but the band showed more life on the lesser-played stuff, like 1982’s synthy Foreigner-esque jam “You Got Lucky” — a smart sonic break from all the straightaway guitar songs — and “Forgotten Man,” a punchy number from 2014’s well-received latest LP “Hypnotic Eye.” – [NJ.com]

Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers‘ 40th Anniversary Tour brought them to NJ’s Prudential Center on Friday, June 16 for a set jammed with hits. Check out the setlist below and pictures from the night (we missed Joe Walsh’s opening set) are in the gallery above.

The tour returns to the area for two shows at Queens’ Forest Hills Stadium on July 26 & 27. Limited view tickets are still available.

...Hard to know what to say really. Something about this tour that didn't seem quite right to me for some reason from the outset, I still love the band and always will....I wish Tom well..and i mean that from the bottom of my heart in every sense of the phrase. It's all very bittersweet and it goes beyond set lists and variety personally for me at this time, that thought based specifically on what i 've seen on this tour albeit from a distance. Im thinking more about Tom the human being rather than Tom the musician bandleader and set list creator. Its more fundamentally on a basic human level I'm thinking of. I do think that it has been one large stadium tour too many but also realise that the tour has also brought happiness to many, some great stories about getting to see the band and the struggles to actually get there...

This is perhaps the most sadly prescient post on the board.

Ouch.  At once this seems like a lifetime ago and yesterday.

On this day in Tom Petty history... April 20th, 2017

Tom and the Heartbreakers open the 40th Anniversary Tour in Oklahoma City at the Chesapeake Energy Arena. The tour would stretch over four months and the band would take the stage 54 times In the US, Canada and England. Tom opened the show that first night with 'Rockin' Around With You' which had not been played since June 10th 1983 at the now gone Irvine Meadows Amphitheater (Happy to say I was at that show too) and close with 'American Girl'. The 21 song setlist wouldn't include any covers but a couple of songs that had not been played for awhile 'Something Good Coming' (2012) and 'You Got Lucky' (2010).
