Rank your favorite Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers albums in order of preference!!!

Recommended Posts

1. Wildflowers

2. Long After Dark

3. Damn The Torpedoes

4. Hard Promises

5. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers

6. You're Gonna Get It

7. Full Moon Fever

8. Into The Great Wide Open

9. Southern Accents

10. She's The One

11. Mudcrutch

I'm not adequately familiar with the others.

I didn't include live albums (otherwise Live Anthology and Pack Up The Plantation would be very high on the list).

If Traveling Wilburys albums qualify, I'd put Vol. 1 first and move everything else down accordingly.

How can you put at the bottom an album with "Insider""Woman In Love" "The Waiting" and "Letting You Go"?

I would revise my list, however, to put Hard Promises below Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers.

I'm a folkie (Bob Dylan is my favorite artist).  Acoustic-based things like Insider, Southern Accents, and the acoustic King's Highway are my particular cup of tea, even though things like Refugee and Even The Losers are initially what made me a fan (from the radio).

That's probably why I like Wildflowers so much more than you do as well.

I'll give It Ain't Nothin' To Me another listen.

Yes Petty just nailed that "License To Kill."  One of the best Dylan covers, and perfect for Tom.

I checked out "It AIn't Nothin' To Me" again.  Much better than "Make It Better" but still not to my taste.  I do like the chorus ("When you dance...") but the verses don't resonate.  The germ of the song seems to be "I'm above all this shit that seems to matter to a lot of other people."

Maybe a bit too much self-congratulation and too little humility (as contrasted with, say, "End Of The Line").

I listened to this version. I liked it. Some nice soloing by Mike. Thanks for the recommendation.

cheers

Just a bit of a trivia question:  So far as everyone knows, is this appearance at the Dylan tribute concert in the fall of 1992 the only post-1990 live appearance of the band without Scott Thurston?  (They obviously didn't need him, as they had Duck Dunn on bass and Howie on guitar).

It's the only post-1990 appearance without Thurston that I've been able to find.

[And for anyone who happened to catch the Heartbreakers on their 1990 tour (More Strange Behavior).  Was Scott with them on that tour?]

Ok, let's try this.

I notice there's not a lot of love for The Last DJ on this board. When I first heard it, I wasn't such a fan. Then I came back to it again and again, it really grew on me and it became one of my favorite albums...

So here goes...

19) Let Me Up (I've Had Enough)

18) Highway Companion

17) Pack Up the Plantation Live

16) Southern Accents

15) Mojo

14) You're Gonna Get it

13) Mudcrutch 1

12) Into the Great Wide Open

11) Echo

10) Long After Dark

9) Mudcrutch 2

8 ) Hard Promises

7) Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers

6) She's the One

5) Hypnotic Eye

4) Full Moon Fever

3) Damn the Torpedoes

2) The Last DJ

1) Wildflowers

Interesting list. I don't know where the Last Dj ranks on this board, I thought more people than not liked it. Some of it is really good and I think Money Becomes King is one of their most experimental and interesting songs; took me a while to realize there's no chorus. I think Can't Stop The Sun is a good album closer as well.

I think that's one of the highest I've ever seen someone put Let Me Up. It's definitely a unique album and My Life/Your World has really grown on me, I think my top free from that record are My Life/Jammin/Let Me Up. But listening to the whole thing in one go just doesn't work for me.

cheers
