nurktwin 2,143 Report post Posted December 11, 2013 Seriously thinking about buying this. Wish it had the "blues", What do you think? http://www.ebay.com/itm/200977798476#shpCntId
TomFest 576 Report post Posted December 11, 2013 Nurk - I'll ask some people I know that are Vox and vintage gear experts for their opinion.
nurktwin 2,143 Report post Posted December 11, 2013 ^ Sounds good, I'll be waiting.
TomFest 576 Report post Posted December 11, 2013 The first responses I'm getting seem to be that a mint condition Super Beatle should be more along the lines of $2,500 to $3,000 - and this particular one has been listed a number of times on eBay with no reduction in asking price. And it's not all original either. People do love them though.
nurktwin 2,143 Report post Posted December 11, 2013 (edited) OK, thanks, I thought that was a bit expensive. Edited December 11, 2013 by nurktwin
TomFest 576 Report post Posted December 11, 2013 Further feedback is basically just saying it's overpriced. But the thing is - condition is beautiful and you pay more for that. It's going to boil down to someone willing to overpay a bit for a vintage Super Beatle in mint shape. Here's an AC-50 head, cab, and trolley for $1,500 less - but nowhere near as nice condition. http://www.ebay.com/itm/MID-1960S-VOX-AC50-SUPERTWIN-TUBE-GUITAR-HEAD-2X12-CABINET-AND-STAND-/190839268041?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2c6ee822c9#viTabs_0
nurktwin 2,143 Report post Posted December 12, 2013 I'm thinking of going to North Coast Music and ordering a new Super Beatle cab and head with trolley. I have questions to ask about putting in the "blues" instead of the "Black Dog" speakers and what the extra cost would be before I order. BUT, the guy claims he's a 1 man operation and doesn't take phone calls. I'd have to email or fax for answers and I can do both, but want answers right now, not in days!! How can you sell Vox, Marshall, Rickenbacker, Gretsch, Hofner, build official Vox amps and more as a 1 man operation???? Amazing, isn't it???
TomFest 576 Report post Posted December 12, 2013 It's been 40 years since Vox stopped making the "Beatle" or "Super Beatle". The current solid state amps from Vox are nothing like the 60's versions. North Coast Music makes reproduction cabinets and trolleys - but NOT the actual amps and speakers that go in them. They also have some parts like grill cloth and tolex. The guy's name is Gary and by all accounts he's a good guy. But he won't be able to sell you a functioning Super Beatle. You'll have to go vintage if you want one. nurktwin 2,143 Report post Posted December 12, 2013 ^ I know that. I will have to get the guts and make it a real amp. I'm just wondering if it's worth the trouble and money to put 1 together. Would you do it?
TomFest 576 Report post Posted December 12, 2013 Personally, no - I would not. But then, I'm not interested in owning a Super Beatle. it's just too much amp - too powerful and too heavy to move around. I think they're 240 watts, aren't they? Most of the time, I'm playing through a 5 watt amp - or a 3 watt amp. I even have a 1 watt amp I play with sometimes - and it's loud! The only reason I'd own a Super Beatle is as a collectible, and then I'd want an old original one. They do look cool as hell though.
TomFest 576 Report post Posted December 13, 2013 Caveman Music in L.A. has "Beatle" head, and a full "Super Beatle" rig. http://caveman-vintage.com/ One recurring comment on these seems to be that- if you ever need service on these, it can be very difficult to find qualified technicians to work on them. TomFest 576 Report post Posted December 26, 2013 Hey Nurk - someone selling a "Beatle" head on my local Craigslist. Same as the "Super Beatle", I think they just dropped the "Super" in 1967. http://seattle.craigslist.org/see/msg/4245626529.html
