Echosoftom 3 Report post Posted December 5, 2007 Very interesting question. Hard one too. I think police officers have their hands full already. But they do have first line contact and they can do initial screening, like for ID and green cards, IF they're already detaining someone. If you ask a person for ID and they can't produce any then if the person can not prove they're here legally they should contact INS. We have a huge illegal population here in CA and really the INS needs to do their damn job.
Starfish 0 Report post Posted December 5, 2007 I would say if they already have someone in custody then sure, but I don't think they need to be going around looking for illegal immigrants. Of course, this isn't a huge problem in my small town.
Mary Jane 49 0 Report post Posted December 5, 2007 I think they do ask questions here if someone is pulled over for speeding etc and has a foreign accent ,and i know that they actively look for illegal immigrants who are working as cheap labour on farms etc

agirl 0 Report post Posted December 5, 2007 If they have a reason to ask for an ID, then yes. But I agree with Nancy, they shouldn't just go around and arbitrarily ask for ID. In fact it might hinder alot of police work.

nurktwin 2,143 Report post Posted December 5, 2007 i said yes, but not to just stop people and stop the cops from doing their job. which makes me wonder, right now if we are stopped, we have to show drivers license, registration and insurance card which all cost us money. would we have to carry another card to show citizenship and pay for that too and get it renewed every year costing us even more? Refugee 7 Report post Posted December 5, 2007 I say yes. We have too big of a problem here in CA. If the INS can't do it, let the cops help.
