Question of the day 3/26/13

Recommended Posts

Easter is upon us, do you remember as a child going to 5 and 10 cent stores like Ben Franklin and buying live baby chicks (peeps) that were dyed colors like pink, yellow, green, blue and so on? If so, what was the story your parents told you when it was time to give them up as they grew bigger?

I don't remember that -- but I do remember going to the penny candy store. I also remember that at most I would buy nine piece, because the 5% tax kicked in at $0.10. I didn't think the government deserved my candy money, the little there was of it.

I remember trying to explain this to my friends and they didn't get it. I was a numbers savant in first grade. Of maybe just cheap.

Yes, I remember the chicks. However, my Mom never bought any. She said it was cruel. My sister-in-law bought some about 8 years ago and discovered why it is a bad idea. The small children choked them to death trying to carry them around like a stuffed animal, and my sister-in-law had to feed them and clean up behind them. I agree with my mother on the subject...it is cruel.

I remember it very well, I was probably 4-5 years old. We'd go shopping with mom and see the chicks at easter time. We'd whine and cry til mom bought us each one, I think 10 cents each at that time. When we got home, we waited for dad to get home from work to show him what we got. I can still see his eyes looking to the sky, as if to say, why did I have kids or even why did I get married.....lol!!!! Anyway, as the peeps got bigger and harder to handle and contain, my grandmother said lets bring them to my sisters house that was 3-4 houses away. She raised chickens and had a fenced in lot for the chicks to run around all day. And since it was only a few houses away, we could go there everyday to see our peeps grow up. Sounded good to me, so we did it. What I still don't know today is, what day a couple months later is if we had that chicken for supper!!!!!!! That's my story and I'm sticking to it!!!
