agirl 0 Report post Posted December 3, 2007 I know some graffitti can be artistic, but I think taggers need to spend some time in jail. They cost people [taxpayers] alot of money.
Echosoftom 3 Report post Posted December 3, 2007 Some of it can be interpreted as art. I know in L.A. they have these huge graffiti type murals along a few of the freeways in the downtown area. They had them done specifically for the olympics. Some of them are actually very interesting and add to the drab freeways. But tagging is another thing. That's all about your name fame and gangs. It's not the same thing.
WildflowerNJ 136 Report post Posted December 3, 2007 I have never heard of tagging, Sharon and Carol....I have seen some of the graffitti going up to NYC...on the old factory buildings. Some of it looks very beautiful...some looks messy. It is funny that the white wall at Abbey Road in London they encourage people to sign and leave drawings. But they do white wash that every 3 months....
Mary Jane 49 0 Report post Posted December 3, 2007 I can`t deny that some of it is very artistic, but i don`t want to see it plastered on buildings etc ,i do think it`s anti-social
Flower 0 Report post Posted December 3, 2007 In Indiana it's gang tags, nothing pretty about it.
Pettyjunkie 0 Report post Posted December 3, 2007 I've seen some really good graffiti that was art, but I agree that tagging is something completely different. I don't think it's anti-social though.
surfnburn 5 Report post Posted December 3, 2007 I don't think it's always mutually exclusive. Something anti-social can be artistic. Something written on a wall isn't necessarily art. If they're writing things on property that isn’t theirs, they're breaking laws.
wild1forever 152 Report post Posted December 3, 2007 I chose anti-social, but it depends. Some of it is really artistic, but tagging definitely is not.
worldview 0 Report post Posted December 3, 2007 I like the Abbey Road idea. Give folks creatively inspired some public space to doodle. I remember one very cool bar in South Dakota that had let all its customers write all over the walls. People had signed in from everywhere. Fun to look at and to contribute to. But public defacement of private property is not cool. And very costly to owners of buildings.

Refugee 7 Report post Posted December 3, 2007 I know it's anti-social, but some of it is very beautiful work. Too bad the 'artist' doesn't apply that talent elsewhere.
PumpkinBumpkin 1 Report post Posted December 3, 2007 Some of it looks like it was made by very talented people, but honestly I'm not a huge fan of graffitti.
EpiphanyDH 0 Report post Posted December 3, 2007 As I live in New York City, from what I've experienced here over many decades I would have to say more anti-social than art although things are much better than they use to be. ALOT less graffiti. It use to be overwhelming. And it had nothing to do with art most of it. Sometimes if the person or persons are caught the penalty is to remove the graffiti and clean it up. But yes I've seen some beautiful stuff as well.
LizzieB 0 Report post Posted December 3, 2007 I've seen some nice graffiti, but for the most part, I think it is anti-social.
Magnolia 171 Report post Posted December 3, 2007 I remember one very cool bar in South Dakota that had let all its customers write all over the walls. People had signed in from everywhere. Fun to look at and to contribute to. ^ There's a bar in Boulder, Colorado that allows customers to write messages all over the walls, too. It was a trip reading all the things people wrote! Tagging is a very different story, though. That's just plain criminal.
Athena 7 Report post Posted December 4, 2007 This is tagging: I think that is up for interpretation. I view these as artistic. My definition of tagging is when they just take a can of spray paint and scrawl their name or other words, taking only a few seconds. I wish what we see around here looked like this. Doxiejoe 1 Report post Posted December 4, 2007 I think it could be artistic, but most of what I see is just scribbled gang tags.
