SingsInFrench 262 Report post Posted September 8, 2012 No, though it's on in the living room, and I can hear it. Dad's watching the Minnesota Gophers and later, the Wisconsin Badgers. I do hope they both win even if I'm not watching. My niece is a MN alum, and my son, Ben, attended WI and is a huge fan.
nurktwin 2,143 Report post Posted September 8, 2012 (edited) Hey Rick, did you know that way back in the 1889 the USA had a land give-away (1st of 6 I think for Oklahoma) for 2 million acres of what is now known as Oklahoma. The US Army manned the borders of that land and fired guns at noon to start the race for people to take off and stake a claim to land they wanted. Many of those people were killed after staking a claim, from late comers wanting the same sites. Here comes the good part! Some people snuck in early to claim the land before the noontime start time. They were called CHEATERS, because they got there SOONER than later!!!!! Therefore the name SOONERS for Oklahoma. I think the football team and the state should change the name, because it refers to cheaters. I learned this a while back watching the history channel and you can also find it online researching Oklahoma on Wikipedia or anywhere. Here is a link and what they have to say: On March 23, 1889, President Benjamin Harrison signed legislation which opened up the two million acres (8,000 km²) of the Unassigned Lands for settlement on April 22, 1889. It was to be the first of many land runs, but later land openings were conducted by means of a lottery because of widespread cheating—some of the settlers were called Sooners because they had already staked their land claims before the land was officially opened for settlement. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oklahoma_history#Land_runs Edited September 8, 2012 by nurktwin

Rick 156 Report post Posted September 8, 2012 Thanks, Nurk. I went to OU my first two years of college. They're very proud of their name there. The school fight song is called "Boomer Sooner." We had two movie theaters in Norman....the Boomer and the Sooner.

Rick 156 Report post Posted September 8, 2012 ^^Nurk, I looked "Boomer Sooner" up on Wikipedia. Here's what I found: "Boomers were people who campaigned for the lands to be opened. Sooners were land thiefs (sic) who settled before the lands were opened, giving them an unfair advantage on finding, fencing, and claiming farm land. If the charge of early entry was proven, they would lose their claimed land." Never knew about the cheaters and thieves. Nothing to be proud of....or maybe it's just "ambition."
