nurktwin 2,143 Report post Posted March 22, 2012 Do you have a riding lawn mower? If so, what make and model and would you recommend it to others?
WildflowerNJ 136 Report post Posted March 22, 2012 We did....and I guess they are good for big expanses but it was hard to go around all the flower beds and ponds and trees here on our 1 and a half acre property. We use hand mowers.....Sears. It keeps my "girlish" figure in check
DCAHNM 0 Report post Posted March 22, 2012 No we don't. Either a push-mower or the tractor with a mower on it. My dad had (and probably still has) a Cub Cadet from the 70s. lol. And no, I would never recommend it. I had to operate that mower as a teenager. It was a bitch to start. It mowed pretty good I guess.
nurktwin 2,143 Report post Posted March 22, 2012 I posted todays question cuz I'm thinking of getting a new rider and wondered what everyone suggests. My bought my old 1 (MTD) in 1984 and it's been great. Other than adding gas and changing oil, I never did a thing to it til last year when I put in a new spark plug and front wheel bearings!! I think it cost me $700 back then, so I got my money out of it. I looked at a few online yesterday and it seems that the deal of the year is on an Ariens 46" cut, 20 HP B/S engine, automatic trans, cuts in reverse and has water clean out for the deck for $1299 at home Depot. I'll take a look at it today, but won't buy until I get the old one out and see how it's working.

TomFest 576 Report post Posted March 22, 2012 I wanted to get one when we bought this place years ago, but the area that we need to mow is just not quite large enough to justify a riding mower. And there is a fair amount of sloped area that may not even work for a riding mower. So we have a nice self-propelled.
Rick 156 Report post Posted March 22, 2012 Used to have a John Deere, which I dearly loved. But my allergies got the best of me, giving me constant sinus infections. Found out that a landscaper cost just about what I was paying for antibiotics and other drugs.

Amber 70 Report post Posted March 24, 2012 We have a 54" zero turnaround "Dixie Chopper" and a John Deere 48" tractor. We have 2.5 acres, my mother-in-law has 2.5 acres of grass to cut and we have a weekend place to mow. We got tired of spending all the summer mowing so bought the big daddy mower last year. Cut our mowing time in half. We had a Husquavara that was okay, but didn't stand up to our son as a teenager abusing it. The John Deere is about 4 years old and has been fine. I had a Snapper Mower that was okay for about 5 years, then we started replacing parts every year. My father-in-law used to have an old "Roper" lawn tractor. He used it for 30+ years. After he passed away, my husband gave it to a nephew since it was so loud and rough he felt the shake for a day after he finished mowing. The old folks did not believe in replacing something that would still crank, lol!
