Tom Petty on lending a hand to underdog radio station KCSN-FM

“Even the losers,” Tom Petty sang in his 1979 song by that title, “get lucky sometimes.”

That tune could become a theme song at radio station KCSN-FM (88.5) at Cal State Northridge, where Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Petty, a longtime champion of underdogs of very stripe, and his band the Heartbreakers will play at an Oct. 29 benefit for which tickets will be sold as part of the station’s fall pledge drive.

Tiny KCSN lost federal funding last year because it wasn’t able to meet minimum fundraising requirements set by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Enter a new program director, radio industry veteran Sky Daniels, who has landed Petty to play the benefit show, and also has lined up some primo donations from U2, Coldplay, Mick Jagger, Sheryl Crow and others as outlined in a story appearing in Thursday’s Calendar section.

“I feel like they’re the underdog in this,” Petty told me Tuesday. “They’re trying to do something different and that means a lot."

Daniels, who championed Petty’s music early on, said he’s trying to build KCSN into a station with a broad-based format closer to the way FM radio existed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, where formats were less rigidly compartmentalized than they are on today’s commercial stations. A big emphasis, he said, will be discovering and developing new talent: “To find the next Tom Petty and evangelize for that artist to the Los Angeles market,” is how Daniels put it in his open letter seeking Petty’s support. “And to continue to evangelize the new music of artists like you. Who else will in L.A.?”

The idea clearly struck a chord with Petty, who quickly agreed to be part of the show in the university's 500-seat Performance Theater. Tickets will be offered up during the pledge drive that starts Friday. (Details are available at the station’s website.)

“I come from a time when young musicians knew that new music could be heard on the radio,” said Petty, who also has his own satellite radio show, "Buried Treasure," each week on Sirius XM. “Now there is college radio, but even that’s gotten a bit predictable. Public radio is about the only thing left -- the last man standing.”

He was echoing one of the key themes in his 2002 album “The Last DJ,” in which he raged against the dying of the light in the record and radio industries, but also held out hope for better days.

“For them to try to go forward with this concept of playing new music is great,” he said. “There’s a lot of great new music still being made. So we look forward to playing this show. We like to play small theaters -- I think it’s going to be a lot of fun.”

KCSN isn't the only underdog Petty's stumping for right now. He's also just announced that his first two albums -- "Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers" and "You're Gonna Get It!" -- will be reissued next spring in limited-edition vinyl releases in conjunction with National Record Store Day activites that help promote independent brick-and-mortar record retailers. A total of 4,500 copies of each title will be pressed, 2,500 for the U.S. and the rest for distribution in Europe and Asia.

Here are the rules for orchestra tickets. I'm guessing that other seats will be available at a fixed price? (BTW, has anyone told KCSN that Stan is no longer in the band? ;))

Dear Elizabeth,

On Saturday, October 29th an extraordinary concert will take place to raise funds for the public-supported radio station KCSN 88.5.

Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers will perform a concert at the 500-seat Plaza del Sol Performance Hall, on the campus of Cal State University, Northridge, CA.

Tickets are extremely limited and will cost $157.50 per ticket ($150.00 plus $7.50 to cover credit card and other service fees). There is a strict two ticket limit per person and every seat in the venue, no matter where it is located, is a great seat.

There are three ways to get tickets:

1. An allotment of tickets will be made available to Highway Companions Club members.

2. Tickets will be sold by KCSN via phone pledges taking place beginning Saturday October 15 and continuing over the next two weeks.

3. Orchestra Pit tickets will be available to KCSN members only via an auction benefitting KCSN beginning Friday October 14.

No tickets will be sent out in advance. Tickets will be available for pick-up at the Plaza del Sol Performance Hall at California State University, Northridge after 6:00pm on Saturday, October 29. Doors to the venue open at 7:00pm and the show time is 7:30pm.

Ticketholders will receive a wristband to enter the venue upon checking in at the venue will call desk the night of the show. The name on the will call list will be the same as the name on the credit card used to purchase tickets and must match the name on your photo ID. No exceptions.

With only 500 seats I don't even think being in California is a big advantage.

Added to that is the fact that the really good seats are being auctioned off...only God knows how much those will go for. It will be a miracle if I can get a ticket to this one!

Susan, let me know if you get tickets! Wendy and I are going if we can get tickets!
Hi Chuck! After being totally jacked when I heard about this show, I've decided now not to go. With airfare, hotel, rental car, and tickets, it's just more than I should spend right now. I came to my senses, and decided I need to put the money toward a car. It sucks to be practical. :085:
