  1. TIL that Maui Jim is going to replace my broken glasses free of charge. I'm amazed, they are broken because I dropped them on the floor and one lens cracked. They were pretty new, maybe that is why. No matter, good deal for me! Should have cost $90 for new lenses. Now I get a whole new pair of glasses!

Same thing happened to me a few years, ago, but I had to pay for the replaced lens. I love Maui Jims, best sunglasses I ever had.

  2. I was maybe 5 or 6? A neighbor landed his Cessna in a hayfield and gave us rides.

The first commercial flight was when I was 18 in 1981, I went to China. We 'dressed up' and our first meal was a champagne breakfast aboard a Frontier flight from North Platte, NE to Chicago. A few years later, a friend came to visit me in Europe and took one of the first trans Atlantic economy flights on Virgin - so cheap she had to bring her own lunch. It was unheard of at the time that you wouldn't get meals on your flight. As I recall, it didn't work out very well, and Virgin fell more into line with the rest of the airlines.

  3. After making arrangements to be laid up all weekend, TIL that my wisdom tooth extractions got moved to Wednesday. So I am more than a little grumpy. My bf was going to pamper me all weekend while I recuperated, but he has to be back in San Diego for work by Thurs., so I guess I get to recover by myself.

^^ Marcia, some banks will waive service charges if you make a certain number of debit card transactions in the month. If you don't have direct deposits, that might be a good alternative.

I use my debit card almost all the time, but they didn't mention that, they seemed to tie it up with direct deposits or an insanely high average balance.

Beamish, it's USBank, although my friend has Chase and they did the same thing in Feb. TIL too, that the 'new law' that caused this, is in fact the government telling them they could no longer charge some of the ludicrous fees they were charging people (like processing debits before deposits in the hope that accounts would overdraw first and they could collect a fat overdraft fee), so they have introduced new fees to make up for that 'loss'.

My friend doesn't have to pay the fee because she has an annuity, but her elderly mother, who does have direct deposits over $500 does, because it isn't a single deposit over $500. So they have gone from punishing people who live close to the edge (overdraft fees) to little old ladies on fixed incomes. Nice.

  4. TIL learned the my bank is going to start charging nearly $7/mo for both my business and personal checking if: I don't make Direct Depositsof at least $500/mo (hello? I am self employed, so no 'paycheck'?), or keep an average monthly balance of $1500. I only make 3 or 4 deposits a month, it can't possibly cost them $14 a month to process them.

If I combine my business and personal accounts, I might squeak by on the average balance.

It has been a very sucky day.

  5. Saving isn't really an option right now. How about selling? I sold my hot tub over the weekend so I can secure space at a new gallery this coming fall (owner needs the money by the 15th) and have gas money for a trip to Hollywood tomorrow, to meet someone who might be interested in a painting or something.

If I had a regular income, I'd save. My husband was the spender, he always thought I was a cheapskate.

  6. Oh Barb, that makes me sad I'll be missing Ape's show. I'll be at San Elijo SB in a couple weeks, though.

I bought some Greek Olives at the farmer's market yesterday that weren't up to their usual standard, so I sliced them, and saute'd them with garlic, tomatoes, olive oil, etc and served it over what I found out was the last of my spaghettini. I never run out of that!

Anyway, creamy cheesecake for dessert later, and I tried making pickled ginger today. It has to stay in the fridge for nearly a week before it's ready. :icon_arrow: The little packets that come with sushimi are never enough.

  8. TIL (actually known for a very long time) the judicial system isn't worth a CRAP!!!! - they give a druggie years and years in the prison and let a murderer get out and do it again!!

Think they have it "backwards"...go figure....

    To paraphrase Mark Twain:

We have the best judicial system money can buy.

  9. ^ Gosh you guys eat dinner early. We always eat late like the Europeans, we never eat dinner before 6:00 pm or 7:00 pm - sometimes later.

What is considered dinner can vary, particularly in farming country, it is often the biggest meal of the day, no matter when. For most people nowadays though, I think the evening meal is called dinner.
