  1. Don't be so hard on yourself, kira. I think part of your dad's being unhappy is his age and he's going hrough a stressful time. It's unreasonable for anyone to expect you change your work schedule a 2nd time and at the last minute. I had planned to go home at Xmas last year, then 2 weeks before, my dad decided he wanted to drive to an out of state wedding, and they would have to leave on the 25th. Basically they expected us to drive 5 days round trip, to spend 1 1/2 days with them. Sorry. Not happening. My mom finally admitted that the logistics on our end just never occurred to her. I don't know how many times they've promised to visit us in the springtime, then never followed through. This year, they finally came. As far as mothers in law are concerned, I'm kinda glad mine had already passed before I met my husband. I understand that she was what people called a "real piece of work". My first M in L was sweet, though.
  2. Thanks for the links pics updates, etc. What a fine tribute to George.
  3. Guitar picks. I wonder if they will wonder in a hundred years what sort of odd tiddly winks game we played back then. Like seeing a button hook for shoes, or those dealies we put in the center of a 45 so we could play it on a skinny spindle. I only remember those from visiting grandma - I think my parents used them as teenagers.
  4. Either/Or I don't mind driving, but if the scenery is nice, I'd rather be a passenger. If the scenery is tedious, it's nice to watch movies on the iPod or read. If I'm driving, we make better time.
  5. Smallish refund. About half will go to the tax preparer, the rest - plus the state refund - will go toward paying our property tax. Sigh. Being self employed, the ideal would be owe nothing, get nothing back. Getting a refund means our income was nearly zero last year. I made enough to put something into Social Security. (If you don't show a profit, you aren't allowed to contribute to your SS account that year).
  6. Darn. Looks like I just missed them. It's only 45 minutes since you posted that. I'm not sure I can live knowing I missed seeing the back of Relic's ugly head on youtube.
  7. Thanks to Ref's "Outside Lands" thread, here's some more (listing only the ones I've heard of before. Sorry if any have already been mentioned): Ween The Mars Volta Modest Mouse TV on the Radio Dead Weather Silversun Pickups Q-Tip Dengue Fever Calexico reminded me of My Morning Jacket
  8. some of the old Blues bands' names are a riot: Gid Tanner and the Skillet Lickers The Alley Boys of Abbeville Black Cats & the Kitten Blues Birdhead Breaux Freres. Okay, it's better than Breaux Bros Brother Porter and Brother Cook Feeny's Barn Dance Band The Hokum Boys Light Crust Doughboys The OKeh Atlanta Sacred Harp Singers Pelican Wildcats Red Onion Jazz Babies (Louis Armstrong and King Oliver) The Rhythm Wreckers - Hey! I like that one! Sweet Violet Boys Whistler and His Jug Band and that's just scrolling down the artists list on my iPod  Another heard on Buried Treasure: Boris Pickett & The Crypt Kickers
  9. The Meat Purveyors reminded me of The Meat Puppets. Hüsker Dü. Pere Ubu. X. Purrkur Pillnikk. I think there are more odd names out there than straight ones! I was looking at Marleen's BT songlist this afternoon, gotta add: ? & The Mysterians. :003: What? nobody's mentioned the Dirty Knobs? Echo & The Bunnymen
  10. Great article. I think retrotalk is the cat's meow. ==
  11. Not for years. Today I took a hike to a palm oasis with a friend. That was better.
  12. What a treat to see these guys perform there. Thanks Relic. I saw a video from there a couple months ago, it looks like a fun place.
  13. Thanks for the link, Ref. I like the fedora.
  14. I'm not much for swimming anymore - but I love my hot tub/spa. I like to wade along the Pacific shore. I used to clean pools, I kind of miss it - a nice outdoor job, sigh.
  15. I don't think the dj insulted him, just maybe pushed his luck, and even tried to make nice afterwards in spite of BBT's douchebaggery. I still feel worst for the band, it's not their fault, but they are the biggest losers in this.
  16. Nurk, you said it all. ...and far better than I could. Thanks.
  17. Welcome to the Farm, panda101play!
  18. Hey! I got my email last night. :023: I feel a tad guilty that it took an incentive to get me to give, but without going into details, I've been meaning to donate lately anyway.
  19. I watched the video and stand by what I said, although I didn't catch where the dj mentioned his past as an actor. I feel sorry for the band, because the interview started out well. Fascinating that he managed to turn it all into something about Billy Bob instead of the Boxmasters. They looked a little unhappy at the end there. Bonus points for insulting your concert audience, Billy Bob. From now on, I'm sure they'll gladly start throwing things at you if it makes you happy. Probably even if it doesn't.
  20. Love some of the answers! I finally picked Intelligence, because the more I know, the more I believe ignorance is bliss.
