you did say Tom Petty lyrics ... but please, oh, please, may I nominate Mudcrutch's Welcome to Hell by Benmont Tench?
Ah, welcome to Hell / population two / little old me, and the lack of you -

The characters of Tweeter & The Monkey Man should all meet up with Spike in Dubs, now that would be a Tarantino classic movie right there... with The Heartbreakers starring as themselves as the house band with Johnny Depp (aka Eddie Rebel) playing Tom!
I somehow see Jan & Spike riding out of Gainesville off into the sunset in a hail of bullets just before the end credits!

Very true!
And I agree to most other things said too..

Yes that is absolutely an amazing verse. Yet again a great example of how Tom could render something so deep in just a few lines.

Well, Eddie certainly plays an important role… he is the first one that comes to (my) mind.
But he isn’t, to me, what really makes the song. That’s in the guitars.
Much more interesting to me is the English refugee in „Louisiana Rain“. I don’t know why, maybe because Petty draws such a strange, realistic picture. Who is this guy? He’s a bit scary.
My favorite is maybe the cast of „Crawling Back to You“:
The ranger came with burning eyes
The chambermaid awoke surprised
Thought she'd seen the last of him
She shook her head, let him in
(…)
It was me and my sidekick
He was drunk and I was sick
We were caught up in a barroom fight
'Til an Indian shot out the lights
Boy, I love those verses!!! Each one is like a short story.

Oh yes - another good one!! The hunger in her veins (which I took to mean her body was still addicted on some level, even if 20 years ago she'd gone clean & moved away from Houston). And now because of losing her house in the hurricane, she's back in the big smoke again. Also love "copper colored sky"!
But sin spoke
A constant invitation
It was in her veins
And wouldn't let her go

Yeah, totally agree - that's an amusing idea in itself hahaha. Like a crowd clapping and no-one wanting to be the first to stop. As for me, I definitely like reading other people's insights and interesting ideas & learning about their passions & what they respond to! Anyway, there's such a rich diversity of ideas, not just reduced to something being either this or that. 😻

I made some glitch art.
Here's the original. I'm not sure why I shrunk it first.

I've always felt a sadness for the 'Orphan of the Storm', and that hurricane that blew her back to Houston....

Perhaps...
June 1979: "Mr. Petty said he sold his fan club, with the explanation that it wasn't making him any money. This was found out after making two trips of 1000 miles, each fruitless attempts to meet with him. It was necessary to appoint a personal representative for myself, as he refused to speak directly to me about it."
Hmmm....

Big Blue Sky reacted to Shelter in So Mike is in Fleetwood Mac ?
I'm not sure what "lot of these threads" that may be, exactly. I too do find certain foul language and offensive personal attacks to be uncalled for, though, when discussing various aspects of our passions in music. I don't see how much can come from such, or how it helps a creative and fun environment. So, let's behave and be respectful. That said, if "Hallelujah!" is the only allowed attitude, only affirmation is acceptable, there's nothing much to discuss anymore, anyway, so.. And once the discussion stops, out I go...

Honestly, I have found a lot of these threads so critical, bordering on mean that I can't even read them anymore. Once the bashing starts, out I go. Sorry, guys.

Okay, whatever, if that's your thing.
Maybe start a different thread if you really want to talk about someone in specific detail like this.
She also fuelled his first wife with drugs. Even her solo career lends its success to her innate 'sex appeal' - far too 'up her own arse' for her own good. I definitely don't want to even think about policing the thread (not my place) - but this seems to be a major departure from the tone so far. The conversation so far is not reverential - I think you'll find it's been quite critical of FMac at times and protective of Mike. But it hasn't drawn on SN's personal life, sex appeal or decisions she made in the 1970s.

Look, just personally, I'd feel very uncomfortable if this thread ever hit the level of just hating on Stevie & laying insults on all aspects of her life.
There are other fan sites that do that.

Sally (the girl who said "bye bye" when she saw the size of the pocketbook of that city man who came to town)... Sometimes I think Sally could be that girl who probably works in a restaurant or sings in a night club.
Sally did what she had to do... And she deserves the best of everything in the world.
We never know if Sally finally found whatever she was looking for. What do you think?

Lots of activity of late on the old 'gram...four entries in the last two days.
So in the first installment of Mike's Tour Vlog he closed with a reminder that "The Dirty Knobs are coming for you," and all I have to say to that is TAKE ME NOW.

Then I would say a song from a completely different band, confusing the henchman long enough for me to smack him with my cane.

Big Blue Sky reacted to 45 Guy in Question About "American Girl"
I think I found my answer today.
Earlier in the day, I realized that a local hard rock / heavy metal station occasionally plays "I Won't Back Down." Obviously, that's not a hard rock song. I've heard the song hundreds of times before, so when the station played it for the very first time a couple years, I noticed that the song sounded completely different to what I was used to hearing. The drums were loud and way up in front, and I remember thinking to myself that this is probably what the song would have sounded like if Stan Lynch had played on the session.
So apparently someone at the local classic rock station didn't care for the original mix of "American Girl," and then decided to EQ the song -- big time -- to make it sound different.

Being Italian, I don't think Tom ever wrote a song that would cover that. As far as a gun being held to your head, I've had that happen a couple times, luckily when 1 shot was fired, it missed. I've been around!!!!
