Big Blue Sky reacted to Shelter in The Double LP That Tom Never Had
I suppose Should I Stay or Shoukd I Go (The Clash) could be said to be a bit of an oddity as well.. Sure it was already 5 years old when TPATH picked it up for frequent playing in 87 (they kept it til 89, I seem to recall)... But in those days (and certainly for a 70s band like the Clash) it was still fairly contemporary and a fairly commercial hit as well. Not to mention that obscure jeans brand (can't think of it's name, but it somehow got the letters in Elvis name a bit scrambled..!) making the song REALLY big in 1991.. making TPATH's call catching it right in the middle of it's heyday.. so to speak.
The timing, again... speaking of Georgia Satellites (even opening for TPATH at the time, how's that for making the cover in question even more odd, or obvious, depending on angle.). Anyway.. end of 80s.. there's Tom, actually on the verge of his own commercial hits peak, with an extra keen eye seemingly for contemporary hits to cover.. a special era, for sure. How I wished that they picked up Sweet Child Of Mine while they're at it.. and let Mike loose...

Its still listed as the original date on Amazon and Tompetty.com  The Vinyl  is listed as 12/7/18.... where did you see that it was delayed?  I would be glad to see it delayed to give AAT more time to get out there, its a far superior package to the regurgitation. greatest hits..

Big Blue Sky reacted to 45 Guy in Rock 'n' Roll High School, starring the Heartbreakers?
According to the Nick Thomas book on Petty, the producers of the film wanted Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers to appear in the film for free. The producers of the film figured that the  publicity was payment enough. The only payment the Ramones received for appearing in the film was the gate receipts of the concert that was set up for the film.

Southern Accents album is one that I really adore.  I actually like that it's not perfect - it's somehow cool to know there were so many dramas and angst behind the scenes & they just somehow managed to shuffle this together to get it finished & out on sale.  It's their hot mess album, you know?
Even though they could've done it better, or differently, I am just so thrilled whenever I hear it - thankful that they didn't give up on it - or worse, decide to call it quits altogether as a band.  And am very thankful that the smashed-up hand recovered.
Having said that - OMG - so many other great southern-themed songs that missed the cut!  aaagggghhhh!!
Also,  I have read that living a good-time lifestyle on a regular basis can damage delicate vocal chords - so much so that many singers are careful about what they do so they can protect their voices.  Not sure if there's any truth to that?  Even if it's just smoke from cigarettes, it kinda makes sense.   But anyway, it maybe one possible explanation of why recording some vocal tracks was so difficult during the mid-80s?

I have also wondered about The Postman.
Maybe TP thought "Why not?" Possibly also it came at a time for him that worked ok?
The film was released in Dec 1997 so it would've been made sometime between about  1995 & 1997?  From what we know, those years were one of the few times TP was not actively engaged in the business of writing songs, recording or touring an album.  Oh, except Cash & She's The One (hahaha I know, but do please bear with me...)
At that stage Kevin Costner had relatively recently made Dances With Wolves  (interesting themes & ideas of prairie life) which gave him a lot of creative freedom for his next few movies: Postman 😑 and then Water World ☹️.  Postman draws on a book of same name & has interesting themes & ideas about small communities in post-apocalyptic near-futures. Though no zombies, alas.
Maybe TP saw this as a short-term project that would give him some creative joy (and get him off the sofa)? Oh, and money, which is nothing to sneeze at. Though I know nothing about the world of movies, I'm imagining a role like the Mayor of Bridge City in The Postman would involve developing a character & enough creative input to be interesting.  (In an aside, TP's cool Mayor is the best part of the movie.  Maybe if the pace was faster & there's less footage of Costner thinking & even just one or two zombies then I might like it more.)
Unlike another music-related project, though, TP wouldn't need to take on responsibility for the whole project nor be in a leadership role.  Which would be a nice change, given the other issues in his life at that point?  Also, the setup might be similar enough to touring to feel familiar for someone like him - a schedule & routine; own space (ie a trailer?); the buzz of lots of busy professionals hard at work; all the details of catering & costumes & hair & make-up; some busy times; some hours of hanging around waiting...

Big Blue Sky got a reaction from TomFest in McGuinn toured with Neil Finn (new guy in Fleetwood Mac)
omg there's a connection between Roger McGuinn and Neil Finn!!???  ❤️❤️
To refresh your memories: Neil Finn is new guy in Fleetwood Mac with Mike Campbell & he was in the excellent band Crowded House.  I read this piece (below) in another forum & they they got it from Roger McGuinn's website (ages ago).  So I think it's ok to copy it over to here!  It's written by Camilla McGuinn who is married to Roger McGuinn. This video (at end) is the only track from "Byrdhouse" I can find.  "1989
Crowded House was on tour after the release of their “Temple of Low Men” recording. Their manager suggested Roger as their support act for the West Coast concerts. Elizabeth Rush, Roger’s agent at the time, negotiated for us to ride on their tour bus with them. It was a bit awkward going into the situation because none of us had ever met and their tour manager wasn’t sure he wanted to share their bus with us. I talked to him for a while, and told him that Roger always has a relaxed attitude and that we didn’t need bunks on the bus since there was only one overnight trip and we would be fine on the couches.

We flew to Vancouver and met the group for the first time at sound check. After Roger’s sound check, all three of them approached Roger and asked if they could play on the BYRDS’ songs. I pointed out that if they joined Roger that early, they would be dissipating their own entrance for their show. They didn’t care one bit - they wanted to play with Roger. Every night they joined Roger on stage with the precision of master musicians. I recorded the shows on cassette. At the last concert, while their Capitol records A&R man was talking with me, I took the earphones from my Walkman Pro, placed them on his head and said, “Listen to this.” I watched his face as he listened and his eyes almost jumped out of their sockets. Capital released my cassette recording of Roger and Crowded House.

Capitol Records never paid any royalties to us and knowing record companies, they probably didn’t to Crowded House either, but it was magical and I’m glad some people have a copy of that piece of history.

Neil Finn, Nick Seymour and Paul Hester performed one of the best high-energy shows I have ever seen. Roger and I would sit on the side of the stage, sip some Champagne and be thoroughly entertained by a different show every night. Their love of the music and the fun they were having, spilled over onto the audience and onto the equipment box we were sitting on.

Other magical moments of that tour were on the tour bus. When we boarded the bus the morning after the Vancouver concert, the group pointed us in the direction of the back suite. This is the primo property of a tour bus and they had decided that it was to be Roger’s. We were overwhelmed. During the drives we spent a lot of the time in the front of the bus getting to know the group. It didn’t take long for us all to become very comfortable with each other and then the fun began. The conversations were filled with so much witty repartee, my head was spinning from all the puns. Then the quiet moments would begin. Neil would ask Roger a musical question, then a Byrds’ question and then a 60’s question. The banter between Nick, Paul and Neil would cease as they reverently listened to the music sage answer their deeply inquiring questions of the times and music of the 60’s decade. I enjoyed watching their faces and wondered if my face still showed excitement when I was in the presence of someone who had made an impact on my life. As I write this I realize that these guys made a big impact on our lives. I was probably sadder when they disbanded than when the Beatles did and I'm thankful we will always have the memories of that magical tour in 1989."

I can see him not wanting to act, necessarily, but as interested as he was in characters I think he probably found it amusing to do bit parts.

Also - love Mike's tribute to Tom's birthday - both in the bathroom and his shout-out on stage before playing Chuck Berry.  Beautiful!!
