Big Blue Sky reacted to mikemono in Your Favorite TP&TH Cover Songs
I've been combing through my bootlegs to pull out some rare covers that the band performed throughout the years. Am slowly posting these songs to YouTube; many of these were only performed once! Here are some, which have already been mentioned in this thread:
The Left Banke's "Pretty Ballerina" 1981-10-02 [performed 2 other times: 1981-09-18 and 19]
Shirley Ellis' "The Clapping Song" 2006-06-14 [only performance of the song]
Gram Parsons' "I Can't Dance" 1983-06-10 [only performance of the song]
Johnny Cash's "I Still Miss Someone" 2000-10-28 [only performance of the song]

The wife of one of my bandmates has relatives in Paradise - parents and a sister. All have lost their homes, and the sister's employer also burned down. Can you imagine? Your house and your job?

Big Blue Sky reacted to chimera in new ELO tour
I'm hoping I can go see this them this time around (I wasn't able to go earlier in the year) since they're playing somewhat closer to me this time. Plus I have a hopeless crush on the bass player Lee Pomeroy (who is actually a really great prog-rock musician but this is his day job).

Big Blue Sky got a reaction from chimera in slightly amusing cover version of "eve of destruction"
oh no - sorry about your Mom's arm, TomFest!
Gregg Turner's version is great! I do like the electronic feedback!
Still can't believe anyone'd choose this 'un for dance compilation, given the huge choice of boppy numbers available in 1966.

Never heard this one before, but it's very Beatley! And hey - nice onesie! But where are the sunglasses? It's strange to see Jeff without sunglasses on.

Big Blue Sky reacted to chimera in slightly amusing cover version of "eve of destruction"
My favorite cover version of "Eve Of Destruction" is by The Mistaken, which was a local band I followed back in college; they put out a indie-released album in 1987. Gregg Turner (their leader) later re-recorded it for a solo album in 2013; it's not quite as good but he gets a nostalgia vote from me because I know him.

That first one is perfect for skating at the roller rink! But I don't skate since that time I was 10 and broke my Mom's arm at the roller rink. Sorry Mom!
But yeah, 'Eve of Destruction" sounds a bit too happy. 5 or 6 minutes was all I could do, sorry.

Big Blue Sky got a reaction from chimera in Let's Try to Make Southern Accents Great Again
so hey farmers, in the mini-documentary for Southern Accents there's the montage where they're driving around Gainesville with Southern Accents playing. There are images of kids & other folks hanging out.
I have a question for y'all.... do you think maybe the first two kids shown could actually be the Petty girls? From 20:40 to 20.52. Also, yes, I admit I am that shallow - another chance to post this (I just grabbed a copy off youtube)

Big Blue Sky reacted to Shelter in Tom Petty called...
Pretty cool album. Certainly a find that rises a few inches above the muck. Thanks for posting!
If GC were influenced by TPATH? I think I hear a few pettyisms in there, yeah. Certainly, they seemed to share an aesthetic interest in guitars with our heroes. Lots of TPATH guitar sounds -there's a RIC hue over a lot of it - and lots of interesting and tasteful guitars to listen too here in general!
What I don't particularly like, is the bland AOR vibe on two or three of the lesser compositions here. Perhaps the glossy production ideals that they seem to roll by, doesn't help. I also think they semi-fail with a lot of the drum sounds. But yeah.. over all a very exciting.
Most stuff here seem very "inspired" by this or that, helping the album's already somewhat disparate material come off like a virtual sample chart of talent and styles. I do hear Tom Petty in there. I also hear unmistakenly large chunks of Sheryl Crow swagger, Warren Zevon drive as well as a somewhat unexpected appearance of the ghost of Bachman-Turner Overdrive and in the midst of this fantastic, ultra American serving of sounds, a surprisingly awesome, almost Sir Paul:ish take on Mariachi.
It's all positively unoriginally original, so to speak. These guys are master thieves. Standing in The Shadow plays like John Cougar Mellancamp channeling Waiting for Tonight and Oh, Pretty Woman,, right? Made In LA - exactly what Def Leppard would have sounded like if they were American?

Big Blue Sky reacted to nurktwin in Classic Rock Video of the Day II
^ 6/10/83
At the end of the tour that promoted their fifth studio album 'Long After Dark' (1982), Tom and the Heartbreakers performed two shows at Irvine Meadows in Irvine, CA. These shows were recorded for a live album that never surfaced, though songs from these shows appeared later on 'Pack Up the Plantation: Live!' (1986) and 'The Live Anthology' (2009). One such song to not have surfaced in any official capacity is their cover of this Gram Parsons tune, "I Can't Dance," which has been uploaded courtesy of an audience member's audio recording of the show.

Hu, nice find! I was at that show. But while I do have a cd-r of the show somewhere, I did not know this one was on youtube.

^ Yeah, the first time I heard the band play that one, Tom dedicated it to Bill Graham, who had just passed. I assumed he felt that one had special meaning for that reason. But I don't really know, of course.

"Tonight Will/Might Be My Night" was performed frequently during the 1986 tour with Bob Dylan, and yes he did often say it was going to be on the next album. The main riff for the song actually became the solo in "Mary Jane's Last Dance."
"Ain't Enough Money" was performed twice on the Temple in Flames 1987 tour: on 9-19 and 10-4. I posted the audio of the 10-4 show to the "Best of Everything" forum here a few months ago and 9-19 is available on The Traders' Den. The version from the 10-4 show is superior to the 9-19 one, in my opinion.
"Goodbye Little Rich Girl" was performed almost every night during that same tour, and so many audio versions of the song exist. A video of the song can be found at the video I pasted below at the 47 minute mark. Out of these three songs it's the one I go back and listen to the least.
These three songs are definitely bluesier than anything that wound up on Let Me Up, so perhaps that's why they were left off the album. Who knows!

"Goodbye Little Rich Girl" is available from Oct 15, 1987 at Wembley Arena. Roger McGuinn opens the show, followed by TPATH and closed by Bob Dylan. The 6th song in TPATH's set is "goodbye little rich girl" that starts at 57 min 02 sec into the show. Here's the link to listen to the show.
New video for today, again with Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, and special guest Roger McGuinn. This is the 34th concert from 1987, the second of four nights in London, and the 88th with the Heartbreakers. The tape comes from LB-3481 and is a complete audience stereo recording. Another tribute to Tom Petty and is collaboration with Bob, with a small series revolving around the London residency at the end of the Temple In Flames Tour. Those shows were the last they shared as co-stars, apart from a few other collaborations. The last shows in London were grandiose to say the least. The second show is really special since it is the only one with the complete set by former Byrds and band-member of the Rolling Thunder Revue, Roger McGuinn, to circulate entirely. You have classics from both McGuinn, Tom Petty, and of course Bob. The show is stellar, especially the heartbreaking Señor. Hope you will like it Here is the setlist

Big Blue Sky reacted to TomFest in The Double LP That Tom Never Had
I was thinking about "Keep Your Hands To Yourself" (mentioned above). That was one that shocked me when the Heartbreakers covered it. Obviously, they've always played a lot of covers, but that was essentially a new song by another band that was out there actively playing it themselves - and it was a big hit. That was atypical of the Heartbreakers. Usually, their covers were songs that the original band was either not around anymore, or they weren't playing it - or if they were, it was still a pretty old song.
I don't know that there are too many examples of "current" songs from other bands that the Heartbreakers were covering live. The 'Beck" tune and the "Lucinda" tune off "She's The One" were fairly new I guess, but not really hits? "Keep Your Hands To Yourself" by the Georgia Satellites was played to death on the radio. Just an oddity for me. Maybe someone can think of others like this example.
