Big Blue Sky reacted to nurktwin in John Lennon and a shotgun shell
Pretty much the same result with anything. The trick is knowing how to use the damn thing!!!! If I remember correctly, when learning Lennon used a shotgun shell, I tried one too and I'm 99% sure that shotgun shell is in one of my guitar cases!

Duane used a coricidin bottle for a slide. Remember those? Original ones today cost a lot, but there are reproductions out there. Tried it, same result. LOL

...might just nominate Ry Cooder there.
I've just been reading a marvelously detailed article about different slides. (That's been my new thing to learn today) Wow!
Apparently, the great Robert Johnson wore a slide on his little finger. some guitarists use hand-blown glass (sounds very much like an artisan / farmers market approach to me) Also that if your slide is too large it'll slide off and hit your foot. That might detract from striking a cool pose, I think, ha ha. 😄 -

aww heartfelt & beautiful sentiment, well worth remembering, especially during this holiday season.
(okay, may I chuckle now about what's surely a typo regarding the prince idea?)

Hello All! Wow! Where to begin! We were so very lucky to have been able to make this happen! It benefited a great charity and made a dream of ours come true!! We had the opportunity to meet Mike and Marcie Campbell before the Fleetwood Mac show in Denver Colorado on 12/3/18! As an added bonus, we met Neil Finn and Marilyn Dash (one of Stevie's backup singers)!! We also met Chinner! When Mike showed up the guitars, he pulled out the SG and I called out what it was. He said "Oh you know guitars?" I replied that I knew a little bit. Chinner was going to sit me down with a Rickenbacker when Mike said "Hey, she called the SG! Let her hold that one!" Chinner said "Well, I was going to let her sit with the most expensive one, but the SG is what she wants!" It was truly an amazing experience!
Mike signed my Mudcrutch album and a CD for my boyfriend. We asked him to autograph the Blue Stingrays CD for a charity auction!
If anyone is interested, we put the autographed Blue Stingrays CD up for auction to benefit Rock the Dogs / The Tazzy Fund on the TPN Auctions FB page!

Big Blue Sky reacted to MaryJanes2ndLastDance in "It Ain't Nothin' To Me" - weird experimental track, or brilliant parody?
That's a good moment, I like how those two parts of the song work in tandem. It's not really like anything else they've done, same with DCAHNM and Money Becomes King.

Yeah that was witty. I liked the little cartoon with James Bond noting his coffee preference, too. The bit of social commentary under the humor was well managed, I think he makes a good point about people identifying too strongly with their specific hot beverages, one can see that in other ways too beyond the article, like in sports or even...musical taste.
cheers

Big Blue Sky reacted to Shelter in "It Ain't Nothin' To Me" - weird experimental track, or brilliant parody?
Yeah, interesting one, that. Been up for debate before, but I'm not sure exactly when or where. Let's just say I know at least one Farmer who may dive right in here, any day now, as if this thread was gold and every word candy. He's a Farmer in love (but it's not me), to paraphrase.
And it really isn't me! I don't understand this song. That is, I understand it, but not in the context of TPATH. Further more, I don't like it. I'm not sure about that word "experimental", though, to me that seem to implicate other, braver and more substantially extensive connotations. I don't know. To me IANTM is actually very generic and bland, in it's own way, in it's own universe (wherever that may be at). And that is even part of the problem. Different is good sometimes, experimental is interesting. But the only thing that makes this song experimental to me, is how bad it fits the band. The song is just a very different and very out of character type of music. To me it's strange how IANTM (and other stuff Dave Stewart co-wrote or influenced) found its way onto SA, in the light of what we know about Tom's original ideas about the concept, and what we know about some of the songs that were left out. This is rather horrible music to me.
No, I don't find it good at all, but I do find it a bit amusing and interesting. And what is REALLY interesting about it - cept for being interesting in a freak kind of way - is the lyrics of course. That's where it's at. (@chimera) Good call about Jammin Me! How true, how poignant. Those are very similar in approach and structure. With JM, though.. enters Bob. Which bring me to the certain type of tounge-in-cheek satire type undertone, the joyful, lighthearted-yet-thoughtful qualities of some of his stuff and... on to.. The Travling Wilburys. (If you want to call any of that parody, be my guest. I wouldn't know parody myself, if they melted some in the microwave and poured it all over me.)
I guess, what I try to say here is that IANTM and JM is both semi-similar in approach and despite very different music mindset, they both lyrically could've been Traveling Wilburys songs, as I hear them. It's that certain type of structure and.. shall we say.. social commentary meets good fun (is that parody? satire?) What's interesting is that Tom didn't come up with any of those songs by himself, either. He wasn't in an isolated song writing environment with the lyrics either, seemingly. Now I know Dave was not in the Wilburys (although at times he probably could pass for Jeff, in the eyes of infidels. I mean, he could disquise himself, if needed..), but as a transitional progession perspective, from 85 to 88 or thereabout, perhaps there is a certain side of Tom's unmistakingly personal dry wit and humor that was pulled in certain directions from these specific collaborations and IANTM is merely an early example of an "dimension" what was again revisited with JM and then flourished in more general terms in the atmosphere of TW and Vol. 3. The main difference, of course, is that the undertone of IANTM (and even JM, to some extent) is rather dark and depressive (at least to me), it's the type of "heavy" that the Wilburys didn't do too much of, really. But still.. to me there seem to be some connection here. It's more of a hunch than a thesis though, mind you. So, now, where does this leave us? I have no idea! Where's the door? Help!
(Besides, what do I know about parody, anyway? To me today's White House seem like a shockingly accurate parody of 1800s worldviews, despotic ignorance and egotistical childish tantrums, still there seem to be half a country out there who seem to think it's the real deal and all for the better. So, I guess.. I never can tell when something is a joke, a dark trip or just everyday life on planet earth. Ask someone else. Thank you.)

Big Blue Sky reacted to RedfordCowboy in This is a question.
One could make an argument that Tom was just trying to find his voice on the first album. When I think of those first two records, they do sound different compared to the rest of his catalog. They seem more youthful, raw, unpolished...in a good way. I love the sound of those two records! The band has said that they were just figuring out how to make albums at the time, and they really didn’t know what they were doing in the studio. And I agree, Tom’s voice sounds different and a lot of those songs. I think that some of the charm with American girl, the way it sounds, his phrasing, inflection, and the way he sings it. I think Breakdown is an amazing song for a first album. like that one came out of nowhere. Actually, that’s the first thing I noticed, when I heard Surrender ‘77, first track on an American Treasure. I noticed how unique or different (youthful) Tom’s vocal sounded on the track. And it instantly reminded me of the early Heartbreakers sound, which I love. Think about Springsteen‘s first two albums as well, Greetings and the E Street Shuffle-they sound nothing like Born to Run. That album is a quantum leap for Bruce’s sound and singing voice… Just thinking about thunder road alone and that vocal “performance.” Maybe the same could be said for Tom… And how the Heartbreakers really came into their own by the third album. Just like BTR, Damn the Torpedoes was a quantum leap for the band.

Oh don't call me a lady, lady.
Seriously though, I don't see hair discussion as being reflective on anyone's character so much as it's just a discussion topic; when you're a fan you're apt to talk about personal style as much as music or performance or any other aspect of someone you're a fan of.

Big Blue Sky reacted to Shelter in Tom Petty: Long or Short Hair?
Right. I use to send mine to the Bahamas for a few weeks every year. While it's away I really spoil myself with cozy evenings at home. If forced to go out, to buy some treats or to see the dentist, I'll normally wear a hat. Then, when it's back from it's trip, all rested and ataunt, we usually need a few days to get used to each other again, and people sometimes will turn around astonished to look at us as we fight our way down the street. Wait what are we taking about. Oh.. ok then.

Big Blue Sky got a reaction from chimera in Tom Petty: Long or Short Hair?
well, I have straight hair & it can easily go from looking drowned rat to fluffy bunny (and back again) in hours. Humidity, conditioner, hair-cut, whether I gave it a blow-dry, wore a hat, etc etc... If mine was anything like Mike's I'd "lock it up" too. (Hipster talk for putting it into dread-locks.)
Anyway, with straight hair, whenever I have been unwell or stressed my hair looks terrible & falls out & breaks off & thins out but then as I recover, it also recovers. I think by any definition, Tom was suffering in the late 1990s & not at the peak of his health & well-being. If you think his hair wasn't 100% great / was thinning, it could easily have just been for those sort of reasons. I'm happy to believe that as he came back into the sunshine of life, so to speak, he could easily have bounced back & that would've been reflected in things like his hair & physical fitness. I understand that for some men it's a one-way street into baldness, but there are many other possible options too.
Also, some people with lovely hair do this thing on holidays where they "rest" their hair ie just let it be for a change & not do anything much with it. This may also be true for singer-songwriters. If you're tempted to try this yourself, however, you need to be aware of what happens next. You'll get a phone call from a loving relative who saw a recent photo & asks if you're ill, eating properly & why are you letting yourself go? This may also be true for singer-songwriters once they have a break from touring, but with fans doing the asking, instead of relatives.
Who knows?
But, hey, whatever you wanna believe.

It looks perfect to you? Not to me! I mean, I love Mike and his natty dreads but his hair is a never-ending source of amusement to me.

Oh, that makes sense!!!
In same line of thinking, I'm guessing Benmont got contacts or eye surgery from 1976 onwards. Some things are just a given for people needing to look sharp up on stage...
Read an article about how much pressure there is on opera singers, of all people, to be glamorous. And then scrolled through images. And yeah, they are all like that now, though there's more variation in presentation the further back you go in history. Apparently they need to be awesomely musical, obviously, to get in but once they're in they must also remember they work in show biz. (Thankfully I'm in a more casual attire profession )

Big Blue Sky reacted to chimera in Tom Petty: Long or Short Hair?
Mike told Alice (Benmont's wife) that he grew his hair out and started wearing it in dreads because he was just tired of dealing with it. If he had extensions or a hairpiece then you wouldn't be able to tell how much it's receded on top over the years, which you totally can when he takes off his hat. Tom, on the other hand, might have had extensions at one time or another, and that's totally okay if he did, IMO.
