Big Blue Sky reacted to TomFest in Interested in your perspective on the topic of continually pushing promotional merchandise via the official Tom Petty website
Well you have to promote what you're trying to sell or otherwise, what's the point? No marketing, and people won't know it's available.

I think you're right. Between all the tacky brand merch stunts, archival photage video fests and what was revealed from the lawsuit documents, it seems a lot of the impulses, no matter how genuine and heartfelt in origin, proove to be badly misguided, ego oriented and backwards prioritized. If by accident so. Thank goodness someone stood up and helped shaping AAT into becoming about the music and the legacy of the man that created it, because other than that, so far it's a grim prospect we're looking at, waist deep in swag, repackaging and cheap tricks.
But let's be hopeful, that once they all had their ya-ya' s out in terms of personal visions, projects and agendas, made a bit more name for themselves and used the stuff a few more times, maybe there will again be focus on what matters.. the music genius and music processes of Tom's.
(Also, playing the devil's advocate here.. let's not forget there where hoodies, bags and keychains over the years, other stunts too.. back when the captain was still behind the wheels himself - sure, some kinda marketing must be ok, even at this point, so.......)
But sure, I agree.. I wish they put a lot less prio on the swag bazaar from here on out.. Would be a tasteful move, all things considered.. To me it just doesn't rhyme to question the Heartbreakers' involvement (and their judgement?) or agenda, or too stall releases of quality dignified archival stuff and at the same time sign OK to all the crap with logos slapped on. And they worry about honouring Tom....!?!

FWIW, When Tom was still with us, he was very hands on (staging, merch, cover art etc). Every form of artistic expression relative to his music was intentional and deliberate. This is slipshod & amateurish., undermining his integrity as a artist in every sense. I hope his family and the Heartbreakers get more rigorous in maintaining the integrity of his good name.

Big Blue Sky reacted to TomFest in How about a Game of Thrones Telecaster?
Tele, Jaguar, or Strat. For the low, low price of $25,000. Cool though.

Big Blue Sky reacted to Hoodoo Man in Tom Petty was on a Del Fuegos song???
Thanks guys! Stand Up for sure is a hot mess of an album and one I don't revisit very much. (Boston Mass on the other hand is to me a classic and brings me back to a simpler time etc.) I cant take this place, and Name Names are two of the best of the bunch. but the strangest and worst song the band recorded is A lot to drink today. That track all but kills the album. Long slide for an out is another stand out track. Its a bit surprising they had Tom on that track as the vinyl only mentions him and other guest in very tiny print on the inner liner notes. The most noteworthy thing on the outer label is there is a cut out to allow the album to 'stand up' and that it was also 'available on cassette'.

Oh I think I hear him well enough. Harmony vocals yes. He's credited with this and some guitars.

Big Blue Sky reacted to Shelter in What Music Are You Listening To Right Now?
Yes!! Isn't Sam the original Rod anyway.. Oh, that Harlem Square Club record is magnificent! Feverish with groove!

Big Blue Sky reacted to TomFest in What Music Are You Listening To Right Now?
I know Rod Stewart did a nice version of this, but here is the late great Sam Cooke with the original. Bonus - the legendary King Curtis on sax.

Big Blue Sky reacted to Hoodoo Man in Benmont Fri 25 July 2019 Newport Folk Festival
If anyone stumbles across reasonalbly priced 1 day tickets for this I would love to go! Had I know he would play this I would have lined up for tix ages ago but its been sold out for a while now. Seems the Newport allows tickets to be resold by original purchasers but it does not seem to allow you to pick single day tix vs the 3 day.

“Here’s a guy who is a founding member of Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, one of the biggest rock and roll bands in the world. That would be enough for most folks, right? But Benmont might just be the most restless, searching musician I know. It's like his life has been an immersion program in music. At their invitation, he's been in the room with legends from every generation, playing his ass off, learning everything he can from every player he meets. And, believe me, it's all stored in his mind, ready to come out his fingertips. He turns up everywhere . . . and when he does, things always get more musical.”

FOUNDATION DONATION
Newport Festivals Foundation has made a donation on behalf of Benmont to support Tipitina’s Foundation. This donation will enable the Foundation to continue their youth music intern program – a program which has successfully equipped the musicians of tomorrow with the skill set and support needed for a music career.

Big Blue Sky got a reaction from downsouth26 in Echo In The Canyon
Oh, no, I didn't mean any negative either. Quite the opposite. I know some people with limited hearing and recognise how valuable hearing aid technology is to them. Am amazed by what I've been learning about Stephen Stills. I had no idea one of the best vocal harmony singers in rock & roll did it all with less than 100% hearing. Considering how some musos & singers put "being born with perfect pitch" on a pedestal etc etc... (admittedly more so in choirs & classical music)
Jeez that would be bad though, to be losing your hearing further, and what a relief to be regaining it...
Haha about the coke. Maybe some is still floating in the house dust up around Laurel Canyon?

And here's a more coherent deal.. summons up a few things most of us already know, but still nice I think:

This tidbit caught my eye..
Amazingly enough - even when keeping cassette copies of most TP albums for archival/collectors reasons - I have never noticed this! I must somehow find a way to play that ITGWO tape and check it out. When you think you know it all...

Big Blue Sky reacted to peterdimples in Let's Try to Make Southern Accents Great Again
Something that stands out about Southern Accents is that the band played 8 out of 9 of its songs, night after night, on tour. I don't think any other album came close to receiving such a showcase in the live set.

Big Blue Sky reacted to downsouth26 in Echo In The Canyon
Sure, it's inspirational, I didn't mean it in any negative way. Perhaps my memory did not serve me correctly here since I thought I remembered reading about his hearing getting worse over the last several years before improving with the help of aids.

Yeah, as far as I'm concerned, this Fleetwood Mac tour, and MC's involvement with the band, can't end soon enough.

Big Blue Sky reacted to Hoodoo Man in 2019 speculation
I see FM rescheduled the Boston show for 10/28 so it looks like he is tied up for most of this year with them. Cant wait for a chance to see Mike in a smaller venue again and not pay an arm and a leg for a ticket. I'm hopeful the DK tour will mimic the Mudcrutch show and come to the House of Blues Boston or similar venue...

...this "super-bloom" of flowers across California might be closest we get to Wildflowers for now. FYI Nice grassroots site (if you're into day-dreaming about hiking & wildflowers in California) seems to be website by rangers / national parks for Santa Monica mountains www.smmflowers.org/whatsblooming/
The first image is posted on a NASA site - no it's not from a satellite - yes photographer is NASA pilot.

Big Blue Sky got a reaction from TomFest in Don Felder
You may've already seen this on YouTube. Don Felder is so interesting. The interviewer gets to stand nearby & say "Wow!" Sure, the interviewer asks good questions, but I think Don Felder could've done this whole interview solo!
Talks about being young working musician in Gainseville - who he learnt from & played along side & gave music lessons to... As well as how he gets his guitars to sound the way they do
