It's the last one, basically. There is a pickup on the shovel. The shovel itself plays no real role in generating the sound other than providing a solid object to attach strings on each end.  The strings vibrate and interrupt the magnetic field around the pickup, and wala - we have sound.
There are more scientific explanations out there of how pickups work, but it starts with wrapping a wire around a magnet.  https://www.guitarworld.com/gear/how-does-a-guitar-pickup-really-work
There was a video a while back called "It Might Get Loud" with Jimmy Page, The Edge, and Jack White.  Jack builds a guitar out of a two-by-four and and a couple of nails and a string.  And here it is......

All the best to them all. But in all honesty, the ones I care about & respect most are the creative core of band - Mike & Benmont. And the team of people like Ryan. Hope this isn't crushing their souls too. Otherwise, I feel, well, what Shelter said.

All good @Hoodoo Man. Never intended to take up “mind share” on a valuable resource for Petty fans, “Mudcrutch Farm”, who want more great music that exists but regrettably hung up in legal wrangling. The intent was simply to draw the parallel between Steve Ferrone’s “For Real” line of sight as to the unreleased music ready for our ears vs the largely repackaged collections released to date. As a newbee, didn’t want to post redundant content, so took your feedback to heart and thought best to retract.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but.. since haven't seen anyone else stepping forward.. here's a piece widely circulated yesterday. Backfire, is the name of the game. But perhaps most accurately described, it's "destructive nonsense", all of it, through and through.

I suppose this means it will be a long while before we see anything bright or constructive from the TP camp(s). Shame.

If I knew it to be a fact that Dana was behind all the producing and pushing the endless stream of ugly swag crap on the official web, if I knew Dana to be the one not listening to, respecting and involving the Heartbreakers (and Ryan?) and other key persons in the music and strategic matters, if I knew Dana to be the one who wanted shut everyone out and run the show her self, yeah.. if I knew it was her idea to have AAT to be previously released deep tracks only, noticeable reluctant to honour Tom through highlighting the creative dimensions and processes of Tom's, by procrastinated everything connected with releasing archival material or following through even on Tom's own list of begun projects and priorites, being irrational in relations to insiders and outsiders.. making sure to highlight her own name and projects as a subtext to Tom's rather than allowing The Heartbreakers and their joint professional venture/brand with Tom over 4 decades call first prio… Well... if I knew that Dana refused to appoint someone professional (skilled and loyal, presumably) who really knows his/her way about running estates like this in a both financially and artistically sound way, but rather kept fans and band alike out to deal with the mourning and office regiment all on her own... well, if I knew all that to be true about her being selfish and greedy, I would have no problem understand Adria's and Anna-Kim's frustration at this point, (or all along).
But. Really. However hard I try, it's hard to put most of those things on Dana, isn't it. Sorry if I sound sarcastic, but I just can't help but thinking someone else is the problem. (About those ever returning - all seasons is crummy gifts season - specials in the official TP store, may those are Dana's brain children... and if so, I'm prepared to call her evil.. but in the light of all the rest... eh.. wow.. how did I manage t-h-a-t reference with such grace? I really think - no matter how much or little greed is buried in what places and no matter how much everyone is entitled to their own personal greif, even in the shadow of public professional icons dying - I really think Dana, Mike and Ben so far seem to be the ones thinking the most of the long term legacy and the music of Tom, the artist, as it were. When it comes to Tom the father, that is another matter. Endlessly sad the way things have happened of course, but really.. not a dimension to mix up with the professional dealings of a creative and artistic legacy and brand finances. Maybe some people have some waking up to do in this regard, and maybe some starting to ask themselves, who is really stopping who from earning money and why? Biting ones own tail? Or just being plain silly? All in the name of grief and loss.
All in all, I suppose this is it. There will be no more endlessly fascinating and deeply heartfelt rear view glances of the genius that was Tom Petty. At least not in the shape of previously unheard music or any other substantial projects made in good celebratory spirit and with a warm friendly vibe (turns out the first and only one out wasn't as friendly as they wanted us to think). At least not for a foreseeable time anyway (in this generation?). And at least not without an Adria Petty Corp. video to go with it.
    Peace and Love to all.

    Massive bummer!
And everyone here let out a collective, heartbreaking “Noooooooooooooooooo!”
The key players in maintaining and championing the future of Tom’s legacy are Dana, Adria, Annakim, Mike, Ben and Ryan U. All pretty awesome people.
And the one’s apparently at odds (most visible) at the moment are the first 3 mentioned.
The important thing to remember here is that there’s always 3 sides to every story (or six). As fans looking in from the outside, we have no clue as to what’s happening or being said behind the scenes. We don’t experience the drama, tension and sadness first hand. No use taking sides. I’m certainly not going to call any of them evil. We can only speculate and add our own thoughts to the mix (which, at the end of the day is potentially futile, and sometimes not constructive).
That being said (ha ha), here’s a perspective.
Each of these 6 individuals were a vital part of Tom’s life. Obviously. No one’s arguing that. In fact, we’re thankful for these people like we were for Tom. They were in Tom’s camp. His inner circle. His family!
Each of them should absolutely have a say as to what goes down from here on out. As to how the story unfolds. Each should have sway, as their opinions, convictions and beliefs matter! Is it any surprise that all 6 of them might have completely different ideas and desires to bring to the table?

Adria: "Hey, here’s what I’m thinking. You know, my dad wrote so many awesome songs besides all those massive big hits! We should spotlight more on the lesser known but equally great songs, and put out a collection of rare/overlooked/underappreciated songs. Also known as hidden gems, or deep cuts. I’ve always loved Keeping Me Alive! What about Waiting for Tonight!? Oh my goodness, the list will be endless. Could be a 3 disc set!"
Dana: “Guys, we totally need to do a 25th Anniversary Wildflowers release, since this was the last project Tom was working on for the last few years! It’s perfect timing for this year. Come on, we all know how much this album meant to Tom, and the fans as well.”
Annakim: "I have any idea. How about a release we call “Tom Petty: Peace and Love”, and we collect tracks that have a running theme about how groovy, mellow and chill our dad was. Here’s a few off the top of my head that we could include: Something in the Air, Alright For Now, A Higher Place, …what do you think? Can you dig it? And we could do more themed releases….like Tom Petty: Songs for Stoners….yeah!"
Mike: “Hey guys, how about that Fillmore ’97 run? I think every show was recorded, was it not? There’s some good stuff on there! Shoot, maybe it could be a 26 disc box set, of every show. I don't know...I think the fans would like that…"
    Ben: "Yeah, what Mike said."
Ryan U: "Guys, can I come up from the Tape Basement now? I’ve been down here for weeks now. I think you forgot about me. At any rate, dang, the Heartbreakers were a GREAT LIVE BAND. How about a staggered series of digital only concert releases? Premium bootlegs. We could pick one show from ever tour, chronologically. Release one like every month. You know, call it Tom’s Live Treasure. Charge $10 buck a digital download. Kinda like how Springsteen does it. What a novel idea! BTW, I found this song called “For Real.” Check it out…

    --------
My point…all good! We say yes!
I have to believe that their intentions are good, emotions are raw, and convictions are strong. And that combination is creating an impasse. Maybe they aren’t quite able to see through the haze right now because of their loss. The forest through the trees. They are hurting and grieving, they are devastated by the untimely passing of Tom. It’s understandable. It’s simply hard to imagine a world without Tom Petty in it. It’s a terrible thought, and a sad reality.
    So here we are.
We all want Tom back. We all cherish the man and his music. We all get super excited about the thought of new TPATH music coming out.
The saddest thing is the apparent inability or unwillingness to choose to come together for the greater good. Are they not able to put aside some personal ideas and ideals to make it work for all? Everyone sufferers as a result of this, yes, even the fans.
It’s always so unfortunate when it goes down in public like this. It has the potential to do irreversible damage to family relationships, which is sad. Once these things get set in motion, it’s hard to go back.
    For the love of Tom…

Yeah.... Nah, sorry, but I think you cut them way too much slack. 😁
Alright. We all know they suffer and we all feel bad for them. It's horrible. Ok. So, of course you are right in all you say, and also very diplomatic. Good for you. Personally, I really think there are a few nuances more to it all than you are willing to admit, not all of them being that hidden or vague either. In short, things may be both more complicated and more simple.
This is not primarily about passing judgement, quite right. Moreover, there are no winners. My previous post being sarcastic by design - and the obvious existence of additional and so far unknown information - all aside, from whatever little we actually DO know, I really think this is fairly obviously a matter of some people being more naturally talented at separating the personal and the professional.
Simple as that. I mean, it's not simple, everyone deals with personal grief and loss in very different ways, true. That is all endlessly complex. But not everyone let their inner turmoil cloud their professional judgement years after a tragedy, not everyone lets pride and passion override their need for humble considerations, for help and respectful treatment of key players/partners/employees or whatever it may be.
Sure, many sides to a story and all that. Just saying. They all feel this loss on both many and surely very different levels, no one's hurt is more real than anyone's else. But as far as the management of the estate goes, it seem the professional considerations and decorum have to be dealt with by someone measured to the task.
You judge for yourself what all key persons involved, that you mention, have said and done, and there should materialize a pattern where I think this separation of private and professional will be visible as dividing line.
As for them having different ideas, that is all fine. I wish it was as simple as that, and maybe to a degree it might be. Still here too some ideas, at least to me, seem more like semi private monuments, involving their personal name and perspective (He wrote this for me!), while others may be more focused on Tom's music and song writing, performing, recirding processes side of the legacy. Again.. the divide in perspective..
But even if it's just me seeing it this way, why then, at least don't they start with the stuff Tom himself was working on/focused on.. why not prioritize the few things they know about his wishes, before they start to fight over wether there should first be an Adria & Kim commentary tracked editions of all the old albums or if it's Adria's semi hinted idea of checking out the Southern Accents vaults, the Complete Filmore, unreleased Hypnotic Eye or whatever will be up for the challenge..whatever they think dignified enough to put TP on it. BUT, again, first things first, starting with what we know, would be the sane and reasonable way, to me. But they choose to stall even that before they got that obvious one out of the way, because they have so many ideas, of equal merit (as you imply and I think not) Not very promising, all in all.. And again, some professional, neutral management.. like someone suggested early on, my be a swell idea...? Is that so hard to swallow?
All I know is, like I said. I'm about had it. By their conduct, they kill whatever little fun and hope there was, being a Tom Petty fan in a world without Tom. It's all very shameful and I'm not sure when we'll all get over this bummer, as you call it. A word somehow slightly lightweight, all things considered.

PS. On a more specific level, it's just too ironic that Adria accuses Dana of essentially "losing" money on behalf of the estate, knowing what we know of Adria's own agenda, ideas and behaviour thus far. In fact, many of the legal arguments themselves seem mildly counter logic at best. (Dana is greedy and thinks the trust is all about money. Dana doesn't earn the trust enough money.)

That's why I used the word 'massive' before 'bummer!!!"
The different parties involved obviously have very STRONG and OPPOSING opinions on what should be released, how and when/moving forward/curating the catalog, etc.
And it seems that Adria is exhibiting her fathers' traits/stance in the matter (aka. WE DON'T SELL OUT. WE DON'T BACK DOWN. WE DO IT FOR REAL.)
Just look at how difficult it was to manage/cooperate/arrange the release of the first 2 posthumus TP projects (as we now find out what was really going on)
    Yikes.
Sad that it's heading/headed in this direction. And I agree it takes the fun (or joy even) out of it...

I always liked to predict what songs on each new album would go in the live show. When Hypnotic Eye came out, I was sure that "All You Can Carry" would be in there, right around the place that "Out in the Cold" was on the Great Wide Open tour. I was wrong.
Its also interesting to see songs like "All or Nothing" or "Fault Lines" get pulled out one or two times early in the tour and then shelved.

I absolutely love Magnolia. I listen to it all the time. It's one of Tom's most romantic songs and I love the way he tells the story as if we're watching a movie. It's epic and intimate at the same time. And the backing vocals are amazing. I never understood why there wasn't more love for that song!

Over decades as an avid Tom petty fan, it sickens me to se his face plastered over promotional materials like this with his lyrics. For whatever reason it just feels so contrary to who he was and how he felt about commercial endeavors. Especially posthumously to continue to push products is in poor taste.    Just listen to his song “For Real”. Do you think the person who wrote that would be looking down at these promo materials with favor? I think not.    What do you think?
