I still have a framed clipping from the local newspaper announcement for SRV.  In a strange way his passing so early inspired me those many years ago to make a point of seeing people play live if I really enjoyed their work.  SRV played the PA club in Garnder Ma - a tiny shithole of an outdoor venue 30 min from my home. I figured I would catch him another time and then he was gone.  I caught Tom and the boys over 10x and Mudcrutch the one time they came to Boston.  I've seen Jimmy Vaughan a few times too.  I've lost count of how many times I saw Buddy Guy as the man is a relentless performer coming around my way at least 2-3x a year, I "only catch him" on one of those trips typically but its got to be 15-20 of his shows at this point.   I don't constantly go to shows but I go as often as I reasonably can. It helps that a lot of artists I enjoy prefer smaller venues and do not command Fleetwood Mac ticket prices so I can get really good seats in a small venue for under 100 per ticket....     RIP SRV

The way he talks about missing Tom makes me almost feel a little bad for disliking him!
I think the song at least means well, which is nice. I heard one the other day by an artist named Alyssa Trahan that was called "Petty," and it's filled with random references to song titles of his. The chorus said something to the effect of "you ain't Tom, so don't be petty." It's supposed to be about not being petty and seeking revenge on a past lover who did you wrong, but because it's also trying so hard to be a giant Tom Petty reference, I think it comes across as very cheesy, but that's just me! 🤷‍♀️
(also I get that his name literally has the word "petty" in it, but do you have to imply that he himself was petty? 😂)

I watched a 2-part documentary on Stevie Ray this weekend.  Reminded me of how great this guy was.  His death was another of those days that I remember exactly where and when I heard the news.  So sad.

Well, how perfect... anything you hate about the song, you can blame Kip Moore. Anything you like about it, that's because of Charlie Worsham's musical influence & taste. 😀 I see there's a YouTube clip of them playing a acoustic version of this, in concert in Milwaukee.
American songwriting.com has this to say about their collaboration.
One of the EP’s standout tracks is “It Ain’t California,” a warm slice of sparkling heartland rock co-written with Worsham and Jon Mabe. Moore wrote the song years back, and he and Worsham updated the tune in the studio.
“I’ve always been super attached to that particular chorus melody, but never truly felt a connection to the verses,” Moore says of the song. “Charlie heard me singing it in the studio and was immediately drawn to it, asking me what that was. I told him I wasn’t in love with the verses and was always in search of changing them to match the intensity and vulnerability of the chorus. We then began discussing our sadness over Tom Petty passing, which trailed into classic songs in general. Before you knew it, we were re-writing the song with a little bit of those concepts in mind, with the backbone being that it will never be the same without Petty.”

I hate to reply to an old thread, but this caught my eye and I just had to jump in and say something.
I listened to this song right after it came out. I can't say I'm a huge fan (but maybe that's mostly because they got the location of the vampires wrong. It's Ventura, not Mulholland!). I've never been a Kip Moore fan; just can't really stand his voice or the typical subject matter of his songs (no offense meant here!), but one of the other writers, Charlie Worsham, is one of my absolute favorite artists. I had no idea he was a big Petty fan (but it certainly seems that just about every modern country artist is), so I was pleased to see him listed as a writer on this. I know Tom didn't care much for modern country (so I don't imagine he'd care much for this song), but I personally think Charlie is better than most modern country artists, that is, his songs have a little more substance (for the most part!). I wonder if Tom had been familiar with his music what he would have thought...
Anyway, thanks for reading this little rant 😂

This is precisely what she should not be doing: stoking the fires of this court dispute by getting fans to side with her on any aspect of it by explaining, defending and justifying - no matter how she thinks it might help her. A dignified silence on the matter, and letting the courts decide is far the best approach. It is also the mature approach to take too. Whining on social media is never classy. Geez, she always seems to come across like a petulant teenager to me.

    Hmm.
---Aside from that I think we're on the same page more or less, your speculation is well reasoned but just your best guess analysis of the situation.
That's the thing, we don't know. Yeah, it sounds incredibly stupid (but funny), Tom Petty's face grimly staring out at me at the grocery store from rows of products.
Donut Do Me Like That etc.
But who knowssss? The Shadow perhaps.
I hear ya. I try to avoid these topics and anything else on the lawsuits but something pulls me back in. Gonna have to get better at ignorin' this stuff. I guess enjoy the music you have, albums and live shows and if something good and new emerges from the TPATH camp it's a bonus at this point.
My impression is the news is heavily edited, filtered and controlled by a variety of monied interests who don't give a damn about regular people. Local news may be different. My point is, don't let this get you down, we don't live in Trump's World nor Clinton's nor any politicians, not really. Sometimes it's best to get off the internet and get outside, be in God's country and do something physical, don't let the corrupt on either side of political lines get ya down.
Speakin' of, took my bike out on a mellow ride the other day, first time this year. Felt good.

I'd be inclined to be more generous if I had a reason to. So far they haven't given me any reason to. I never said they were spoiled. I implied that their lives and their recent behaviours, since his death, don't really reflect the values I believed TP to have. My supposition is that is why TP left his wife in charge of the Trust, not his daughters. But, as you say, no one really knows the whole truth and I might far wide of the mark. If I am, I am happy to concede. But if you are in the public eye, or want to be, I would want to make pretty darned sure that I created a good impression so that I could limit any criticism that might come my way.

Well in defense of Adria she did just release a number of videos for her Dad's posthumous releases as well as I think Luke Ryan or something like that (- its a country guy that I don't follow or care much about.)
As for Annikim she did post on Instagram last night a photo of a mock up of a salad dressing bottle 'classicrock.com" or the like had put out "advertising" the article about Dana's lawsuit.  She claimed they had NEVER floated the idea of the products listed in the article and has no idea where that stuff came from and she thought in a way it was hysterical that anyone believed that stuff.  My insta skills are not very good so I cant find it so not sure if she deleted it or if I just suck at searching that site.  The comments were kind of funny on her post and people pointed out "Tom looks kinda pissed off" on the label as we know he wouldn't approve of it.
I wish I was better at ignoring these stories and could just "let it be" but living in Trump world I find myself watching the news in disgust more than in past years....

PPS I just don't see why would anyone would be rude to any of the Heartbreakers. That's a biggie for me. I say that as a fan, looking on. Who would lose my cool if I ever saw one in the street (& is prepared to fork out big ones for a FMac concert just to see Mike play & Chinner pass him guitars).  Maybe Mike secretly kicks his guitars & Benmont steals all the choc cookies... but they seem so darn lovely & committed to being a band of brothers. Those lucky few.
Seems so unnecessarily brutal. Maybe it was taken out of context? Written in haste? Regretted it immediately?

Hahahahahahahah.  Shelter strikes again, straight to the heart of the issue.
Whenever I've seen this image (below) online, I've always laughed... until now. Now my blood runs cold at the thought of things to come unless smarter heads prevail. Which hopefully they will. Also, I'm admiring all the more how they handled the divorce situation back in the day. Keeping it as private as possible for as long as possible, I mean. Separating the music & what's in the public eye from what's legitimately private family-only.
Also, maybe worth noting that as Annakim Petty was born in 1981/82, so & Adria Petty was born in 1974, they've been adults for a while now... Adria Petty's 45ish & Annakim Petty's 37ish. That gives them years & years of building up life experience, professional work-ethic / career and networks of other adults... All of that creates a pool of emotional resilience they can be drawing on now.  They're daughters, yes, but not frightened little girls, nor vulnerable teenagers facing an overwhelming crisis.  By the time Tom Petty was their ages? He & the Heartbreakers had already created 7 albums & were touring the world with Bob Dylan (Annakim Petty's 37ish, so TP in 1987). Touring Wildflowers album & releasing a career retrospective Playback (Adria Petty's 45ish so TP in 1995). In other words, I'm not saying they should be professional musicians too (talent & skill & hardwork aren't always genetically inherited), just using TP's ages as a point of reference. Personally, I'd appreciate it if tompetty.com covered the basics,
like having all the albums in stock as vinyl & CD & downloads instead of having only a few at a time. So people can, you know, access the music in a range of media.  Also creating access to high-quality recordings of concerts, like other people have already been saying here. I freely admit, I do like a slogan / logo tshirt - just never when merchandise is a bands' main selling strategy.

Also available as a hoodie.   Don't worry, it's not really advertising a real flying school. The designers at bathroomwall.com say:
There is just something about Tom Petty that makes you feel great. Whether it is his honesty and integrity that lead to his stand against the greed of the record industry or just that laid back delivery that makes even the coldest day feel like summer hanging out with friends in the sunshine; it is impossible not to love the man. And it is Tom Petty's ability to recall a simpler time that inspired this Learning To Fly T-shirt.

From what I can tell, Annakim has never done a day's work in her life. She's just followed her father around touring, smoking weed and living off a trust fund. Even Adria's 'artistic' outputs, as a videographer working on some films for famous people, was limited to just a few years in the naught-ies. She's done bugger all ever since - admittedly she's been bringing up her daughter. Both girls - who call themselves 'artists' (what a joke) - strike me as being rather too inclined to live off their father's money. Annakim seems rather child-like to me, not to mention self-absorbed, judging by the utter tripe and selfies she puts up on her Instagram page. I get the impression she does sod all with her day apart from preening herself in front of a mirror and posting on social media. If that is not so, she is not doing a very good job of promoting a better image of herself.
As both girls are both so privileged by clearly being financially independent, long before TP died, they really should be getting their arses into gear and devoting their lives to charitable projects. Doing real work, in other words. There is really no excuse for kids of the very rich and famous to be doing nothing at all. Setting up trust funds for kids so that they can just roll out of bed midday and swan around life in a life of self indulgence and laziness - and doing a bit of hobby jobbing - just to appear purposeful and busy - but really  'not doing very much' is really not a good way to live.
It seems to me that this spat they are currently in with TP's wife clearly indicates that they have no concept of team-work or cooperation - precisely because they have spent far too long living a life of extravagant self-indulgence. Meanwhile, the older one - Adria - seems to think it is perfectly fine to insult the Heartbreakers by sending them rude emails and trying to cut out any reference to them on the latest TP release project when the band have done precisely what she has not: got their finger out in life and honed and talent based on effort, hard work and endeavour. One of the main reasons why I am far from impressed with TP's daughters and more inclined to believe his wife who, at least before she married TP, did have a proper career as a Head Teacher and, after she married TP, devoted her day to managing his schedule, which I should imagine is not all that easy. Far more impressive, I would suggest, that swanning around doing sod all.

Awww, happy feelings about this 1969 Creedence Clearwater Revival album! Playing it last night on my new Bose headphones.
The same as with Tom Petty's Wildflowers, every track is killer (so no skipping or leaving for a beer) & the songs flow as a whole. Sound is mixed well, so their rock solid bass & drum sound creates a solid base to the rest of the band. Vocals =  You can even find a bonus track with CCR jamming with Booker T.  It Came Out Of The Sky, Midnight Special, cover of Leadbelly's / traditional Cotton Fields. (Same year as Beach Boys' Cotton Fields). Lyric: White House said: put it in the Blue Room. Vatican said: it belongs in Rome. Jody said: it's mine, but you can have it for fifteen million.   1969 = good year for good music!

I have yet to listen to every show, but I've been listening every day on Sirius due to their being free until June 4th (which is great for me as I'm a broke college kid!). However, I noticed that another member here seems to have all the episodes available for download, so I definitely plan to partake in that! I love the show and I'm gonna be sad when Sirius stops being free next week 😪 but having all these episodes available makes it a lot better! 😁

Thank you! If I'm being completely honest, early 80's Tom is my absolute favorite, and that outift he's wearing in that picture is my all-time favorite of his as well! It couldn't be a more perfect pic for me!

Thank you for answering my question! I'm in a Tom Petty Facebook group and someone had asked the same thing in there to Mark Felsot, but he didn't really give an answer; he just mentioned that Tom had told the story many times on the Buried Treasure Show, so I very much appreciate your input! 😁

^ Although in his defence, he didn't mean that as encouragement, right...
But yeah, I suppose "good taste" is key, rather than do or don't. However.. taste.. is a b... really. For example, I personally find 9 out of 10 official store TP 'things' to be decidedly awful. At least, 'taste' is not a word that strikes my mind. But I know others love it and cherish their Torpedo tumblers and Learning to Fly frisbees as their most prized possessions, so who am I to say really.
Like you say, just look what's being done to Bowie, Lennon, Elvis Cobain and the lot of them... most is unofficial crap, surely, but still..
You're right, either way there's no stopping it. All you can hope for is the official stuff to be of top quality and style..... and we're back at square one, to quote a phrase... In the best of worlds I'd personally prefer if the estate didn't feel the need to hustle this stuff at all, that theyd keep well above t-shirts now when the actual game is sadly but truly over, that managing the rights to the catalogue and wise investments of existing funds would keep them wealthy enough to.. 'let it be', to quote another....

Hi! I'm new around here (this is my first post, in fact) and I haven't had a lot of time to look around, so I'm sure this question has already been answered, but I'm dying to know: what is the story behind Rick's Airport Recorders? I know Tom mentioned it on every episode of the Buried Treasure Show and that's where he recorded the Buried Treasure Show, but every time I hear him say it, it feels like an inside joke that I'm not a part of 😂
If anyone wouldn't mind to explain the story behind it, I'd appreciate it more than you know!

Speaking of merchandise is reminding my of a half-remembered story about Rolling Stones various accountants have told me. Jump in when you know what I'm trying to remember!
Allegedly, early on, back in the 1960s, Mick Jagger looks at the numbers after a USA tour... and realises they made more money from tshirts than from ticket sales. Partly because they're paying a cut from ticket sales to promoters, venue hire, so really they only get what's left over. Whereas, they only need to pay out to the tshirt makers & printers & people on the merch tables.... and the band gets all the rest. Plus it's a firm of advertising (before Instagram influencers).
Against that, they can't just sell t-shirts. Nor do they want to. They're a band & full of creative fire & just trying to stay solvent. Principle is: Better the music & the performance, the more t-shirts they sell. But those t-shirts etc do create a solid income stream, a cushion between them & the bailiffs.
