  1. Wow, $1000... ah, about $1 per week for all those 20 years... Is it a maple syrup tree by any chance?

So pleased for you & Mrs Tomfest that your master arborist feels there's a good chance for long term survival. 🌿🌿🌿 that's a happy diagnosis. :D despite the cost.

In slightly related topic, did you see a family in Japan have lost 7 of their bonsai to thieves? They're saying "please water them!" One tree has even been in the family for 400 years (ie since early 1600s)! I think my ancestors were still living in mud huts & arguing with their neighbours about bagpipes & sheep at that stage - definitely not planting bonsai.

  2. Hi folks,

Here are the wonderful "Bathroom Jams" that the Campbells have been creating and posting on his instagram page.  I guess it seems a good idea to collect these in one spot, since he's producing so many!  Bear with me & I'll attach all the ones they've created so far (almost 40!!) There may be some doubling up with what's already been posted on Mudcrutch Farm.  ;) Once we're up to date, it'll all smooth out... How's that sound? Okay?

(There are also other things on his Instagram.)

All righty, here goes... the first 5 Bathroom Jams!

  3. ...in a Roman Catholic church (bank of votive / prayer candles) & someone curled up against the wall wearing a strappy top? Jeez, that's well outside of usual cultural reference points & more than a little disturbing, seen out of context...

would it be from "Walls", which was full of rich imagery? "Playing Dumb" is the only song I can think of with specific Roman Catholic content & that was later. Whereas, this looks like late 1990s, Wallflowers era Tom Petty.

Help! Happily, someone will know. Thanks in advance.

  4. Oh gawd, Mike Campbell communicates so much through his music.

Uh, hey, if you're not one for checking his social media directly & prefer to pop past here to see what's new (& it seems this is true for a few people), it might be cheering to know there's a small stack of recent posts... forming a temporary backlog as they haven't all been re-posted here. 📚 Plus, the Campbells seem to be posting new content quite often at the moment. 📚 This is good, though, right, because over the next 24 hours or so, I (or anyone else, obviously) will find time to re-post them here.

So, stand by for a mini-tsunami of lots of Mike, guitars, dogs, singing & other lovely insights from our favourite lead guitarist. 🎸

  5. Justin Johnson

Has someone mixed the DNA from Tom and Mike? (Only kidding. Though if someone said he's Mike's nephew, I'd believe them. Look at those hands! So,  yeah, to clarify, he's not related to them at all.)

According to justinjohnsonlive.com Justin Johnson comes from a musical family - his 1st guitar was a Stella with one string. He's fascinated by blues & roots music. As a contemporary muso, making his start, he (& his partner, now wife) lived on the road, touring, in a camper van for the past 5 years. He's released about 4 albums - playing every instrument in the earlier ones. They are now based in Nashville, recording most recent album as a band, produced by John Carter Cash.

    1. There's YouTube footage of him performing at festivals &, you know, casually ripping a masterpiece while sitting on his back porch. Recording blues at a Mississippi crossroads by a graveyard at midnight.
    2. But more amazingly, look for footage of him playing vintage & unusual instruments (cigar box guitars, shovel guitars).
    3. And videos of him patiently teaching / talking about techniques for slide & finger picking.

Frankly, any one of these is enough to win me over. I don't know if he "carries his guitar in a gunny sack", but it would not surprise me. This is a guy who makes guitars out of whatever's lying around.

Sorry, I've missed the back story on these 2 ladies in the shower with Mike.  Who are they?  They sure sing nice.

    They sure do!

Dark-haired singer's name is Sharon Celani (sometimes listed as Sharon Celini or Ceylani). Blonde singer's name is Marilyn Martin (Instagram is @marilynmartinofficial)

^ Yeah, I believe they are the "Webb sisters" of the Fleetwood Mac tour, so to speak.

Kind of, I guess. Side-musicians.  Singers.  Vocal harmonies. Backup singers. As some listeners point out, Stevie Nicks' voice operates within a narrow range. So having other singers in the studio and on stage too helps create a fuller sound & vocal harmonies. I looked this up just now:

    • Sharon Celani's consistently sung with Stevie Nicks ever since 1978. Usually it's as a pair with Lori Nicks (Stevie's sister-in-law). She's credited for vocals in "Stop draggin' my heart around", "You can still change your mind" & "Don't come around here no more"!! In fact, if you bring up the Whitehouse performance on YouTube, she's there on stage for Silent Night.
    • Marilyn Martin sang on Nicks' album Rock A Little, went off & did lots of other things.  She's also credited for vocals in Don't come around here no more. She's been back singing with Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac since 2016.

  7. ...according to the real estate website there's a llama farm next door to studio. Sigh. ❤️ alpacas, near enough. Aha, Shelter, so that's where I've heard the name Mendocino before! Ah those pirates...

    • Let's get out of Santa Cruz / All I've got is this Canadian dime.

Anyway, thumbs up for "For Real". Hmm, good question, Shelter, who did what for real? For me, it's gonna be Tom Petty's own life full of creating music with his band of brothers & ... it's gorgeous. So, unless someone convinces me otherwise (& even then...)

  8. Off piste

I was curious about the place Benmont Tench mentions: Mendicino.

Turns out it's a studio in a converted schoolhouse on the coast. Currently for sale, so lots of pictures of it looking particularly fine.

Low whistle of appreciation - coastal California is beautiful or what?!

  9. On Benmont Tench's Twitter. Just to focus, I won't copy in whoever on Twitter asked questions etc. Shall just say Q (for question), okay? Obviously, pop over to Twitter & explore further if you're  interested beyond the snippets quoted below.❤️🎹🎹🎹

🎹🎹🎹 speaking of possible threads, what about one for appreciating Benmont's solo material and work / collaborations with other musicians? Does it already exist?

Q:"For Real" is beautiful. Is it from The Last DJ sessions?

Benmont: No, we went to Mendocino in 2000, I think, to cut a version of "surrender" for " anthology: through the years," it was done the same day.

Q: Thank you. It has a great sound.

    13th Feb

Q: Benmont! Tone question for you. When Mike is playing guitar does all his rhythm tome come straight from the amp or does he use pedals? Thanks!

Benmont: No real@idea but I expect it varies song to song. But as with any truly great musician, most of it comes from his hands & his heart:)

    Q: I love this answer!!!!!!

  10.  Tom Petty lyrics and songwriting?

     Go. 😀

I wonder if similar theme of For Real emerged into "Last DJ" album: "didn't do it for no CEO".  On other hand, that feisty independent opinion & sense of frustration pops up across the man's whole career.

I see where your mind went with the use of "brother". Oh, well, who's to say? Three possibilities for me:

    • Using it as a phrase - "oh brother" - similar to, say,  "oh wow"?
    • the character is talking to a close friend who's like a brother (who he feels is as close as, or even closer than, a brother)
    • The character is talking to his brother (in his family).

Agree, campbellfan1, please share your thought & opinions some more.  (Cool name.)

ooo now yes, this is always interesting with any kind of artistic creation:

    • authors are being autobiographical, confessional
    • authors are creating characters based on stories or situations
    • authors are creating characters from their wonderfull imaginations
    • author might be trying to write in character but their reality keeps leaking through their creative process, colouring their characters*. Might not realise so clearly In the moment of creation, might only become clearer later on...

    * So in extreme cases, a character might even be author's avatar, in sense that one of their characters shares a lot (ie many characteristics, opinions, motivations etc) with the actual author. Levin character might be Tolstoy's avatar in Anna Karenina ... Some readers even wanted Arthur Conan Doyle to be a detective just like Sherlock, not be "just" an author. I know, people's expectations are weird & intriguing & awesome, huh?

I haven't read the Zane's book yet even though my mom has had it since it came out but I do know one thing that annoyed me about Zane's book, though not his fault, is the fact about Tom opening about his own heroin addiction when he essentially buried Howie in Conversations for his problems with addiction. I believe it's in the Howie chapter where they talk about his heroin use and Tom does say that he tried it but always stayed away from it because of how he felt when he took it. It just comes off as super hypocritical. Still think the book is a great read though

Yeah, nah, I know what you mean. It's all so complicated & messy... If it was a novel (or a film) it would be all getting too complex around that time.  But, well, here are two cliches: nothing good ever happens when you go out after 2am & drugs can mess people up for years after they stop using.  It's like a dragon which, though seems it dead,  might still bite or puff smoke or flame...💥 🐲 <---dragon emoji.

Other, possibly more interesting, questions might be: well, on reflection, what would you do in a similar situation, if you were any of them - Howie, Tom, an interviewer... Let's say you know someone who's got some major devastating personal issues they're dealing with but maybe haven't really come to terms with yet. Or maybe these are open secrets in your trusted circle.  Oh, and there are legal issues attached. Now imagine a biographer wants an interview. To what extent would you advise your people to be completely honest & open & transparent?

A complicating factor is, maybe, how vulnerable we are to fooling ourselves.  I told a friend I joined a gym & enjoyed the first session. But I had actually skipped the first session & she found out (just by accident). She said: "Why did you lie to me?" I said, "Well, um, I guess I was lying to myself. I'm not ready to admit to myself that I paid that money but didn't go..." She said: "Really? Lying to yourself & not to me? That's a subtle distinction which only you can see." Which is very true indeed.  Anyway, that was just a simple gym visit & yet I tangled myself into all sorts of ethical & moral knots around the issue of trust.

  12. The reason I'm so interested is because we've often seen big trees at botanical gardens. Sometimes they have tension bandages / corsets holding splits or grafts together while damage heals. AND long-term cabling, crutches or other supports under branches to bear the weight. Japanese (I've not been) are keen in this treatment too.

Your damage is up and down but the bark looks okay? In my amateur keen gardener opinion, where there's bark, there's still hope.

(If damage was across-ways with a stump and separate fallen tree 😕or Winter ring-barked your maple 😕 )

what about if treatment meant you could still save even one side?

Okay, some images, just off internet, of what im talking about. (Hope what I've suggested isn't fiendishly expensive for domestic gardens and only available for heritage trees in botanical gardens!).

    Good luck!

In the fall it was really spectacular.  The best looking tree on the street.   I'm so sad.....

Admittedly with a smaller tree. http://gardenatoz.org/whats-up/ensemble-editions/late-winter/whats-up-82/fix-split-trunks/

Or if you can even manage to have a tree surgeon take a look? (Fancy name but they are definitely more than just gardeners with chainsaws.) Such a beauty in fall & looks shady for summer too. I love trees & am hoping for a good outcome. Maybe your maple can be snatched back from hungry jaws of winter & have another 8 lives (cat-like).
