    Question About "American Girl"

I think I found my answer today. Earlier in the day, I realized that a local hard rock / heavy metal station occasionally plays "I Won't Back Down." Obviously, that's not a hard rock song. I've heard the song hundreds of times before, so when the station played it for the very first time a couple years, I noticed that the song sounded completely different to what I was used to hearing. The drums were loud and way up in front, and I remember thinking to myself that this is probably what the song would have sounded like if Stan Lynch had played on the session. So apparently someone at the local classic rock station didn't care for the original mix of "American Girl," and then decided to EQ the song -- big time -- to make it sound different.

    Question About "American Girl"

I listened to both versions of the songs. Thanks for posting them! Unfortunately, neither version is what I heard. The guitars and the backing vocals were "way back" in the background in the mix I heard.

    Question on Tom Petty Book

I pre-ordered the new Nick Thomas book and just got it today. I compared it in size to the first edition. The new edition doesn't have an index in the back of the book, which is 11 pages in the first edition. Also, the lettering is smaller and the margins are more narrow, So yes, the new book is definitely bigger. I would estimate that it's about 15% to 20% longer than the first edition. So far, I'm happy with what I've read. There's some new information about Petty and the Heartbreakers that I haven't read anywhere else.
  4. I'm sure that I'll get yelled at for saying this, but "American Girl" is my least favorite Tom Petty hit. So imagine my surprise when I heard a version of the song that I kind of liked. Where I live, I can pick up four different classic rock stations on local radio. Earlier this year, one of the stations was playing what sounded like a re-mixed version of the song. By remixed, I mean it was the same length as the original, but the vocals and drums were way out in the front and everything else was buried. The song sounded fresh as though it was just recorded. But here's the strange thing -- after about 5 or 6 months, the station stopped playing this version of the song. So my question is this. Was this merely a radically EQ'ed version of the song or is this version from an official release?

    Tom Petty Quiz

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the Tom Petty trivia book that's for sale on Amazon and Barnes & Noble. I've read it and the questions vary from easy to expert level. And it's obvious that the book was written by a huge Tom Petty fan.

    Traveling Wilburys Book

But you surely remember what Bo Diddley (and Tom Petty) said about judging a book by the cover.

    Traveling Wilburys Book

Has anyone read the new Traveling Wilburys book, "The Traveling Wilburys: The Biography" by Nick Thomas? I just saw it on Amazon.

Tributes and covers from peers and writers

I've done Google searches on Tom Petty every few days after he passed away and I've been amazed by just how many musical tributes have been staged around the country. Here where I live, they held a tribute with 20 local acts and filled up a large concert hall.
  9. We've all seen the music video for "You Got Lucky" many times. So what exactly does Tom Petty say when he knocks over the video game? Any lip readers on this board?
