Mike's playing was put to the test during the 1986/87 tours with Bob Dylan and he excelled.
I love his playing and find him the most interesting member of the Heartbreakers.

He's one of the best rock and roll guitarists and a prime example of how to do a lot with very little. He's come up with so many perfectly tasteful leads and riffs and little melodic counterpoints that push the songs to the next level and that's aside from his prowess on the guitar, he can shred if he wants to and can improvise as well. For me, his best solo on record is from Running Down A Dream that feels like you're racing down a road of infinite potential and builds to a wonderful climax.
The man always came across as humble as well, from the interviews I've seen, how he's interacted with fans (as far as I can tell) and on stage; all that comes out is a love of playing music.
    cheers

I agree with all of you that Mike is the best guitar player out there now. His guitar playing is perfect at any style of playing. Mike is a student of guitar playing by many guitarists, especially George Harrison that makes every note perfect. Mike is a guitar hero, and most likely the last one for MANY years to come.

Certainly we don't. Just watch any of the "young" guitar heroes. Or worse, listen to them. Plenty of skill and cool poses around. Heart and soul.. not so much. The likes of Mike can really take you places. A rare thing..

I’m new to this forum and was only a casual fan until Tom Petty died. There was so much about him on the internet and tv when he died. So I started reading about him, watching YouTube videos and listening to his music. His story is so compelling. He seemed like such a principled person who overcame so much, but he also seems so relatable. I find his music more moving than I did before and became aware of music of his I’d never heard.  I started following the circumstances of his death and am very saddened by it. I largely agree with above quote. I think there may have been something more serious to his health that the public was not made aware of. His most serious (difficult to treat) health issues, emphysema and coronary heart disease, were most certainly caused by his smoking.  It’s so tragic because at least the emphysema was avoidable.  It seems he was also depressed, which may have been related to his health problems. I think his death could start a dialogue not only about opiate addiction, but smoking addiction and depression.

I am also new to this forum. I have been a Tom Petty fan since the seventies. I agree with HPsquares opinion. I know we all get older and we think we look the same but when we look in the mirror, OMG, is that really how we look? I saw a dramatic change in Tom in the last 8 years or so. I realize that we cannot still have our blond hair and our skin may sag but he did nt look like himself. I was thinking, plastic surgery, illness? I did read throughout the years that he had knee surgery, hearing loss, arthritis, etc. all are casualties of his industry. But then again, I thought of Mick Jagger and Bruce Springsteen and Paul McCartney. Whereas, they do show their age and may not look as they did in their youth, who does? Tom did not look so good. I saw him with Gary Shandling in an interview in his studio, it was hilarious but Tom looked terrible. I know people are stubborn and strong willed but how did he manage to tour with insurance. I thought all performers have to demonstrate good health before filming a movie etc.? Where were his handlers, who would have stated that this was not a good idea? I am not assigning blame but just wondering. I also felt that maybe, just maybe, Tom knew he was at the end of his life and wanted to go, that he did all he could do. But he had children and a granddaughter and his wife, so I discounted that idea.   Tom was indeed the BEST and deserved better. I look at old YOUTUBE footage and just want to cry. I have been so out of sorts since he died. I have seen him several times in my lifetime and he never disappointed. I just hope that he is restored to his former self, maybe Travelling Wilbury times, in the great wide open, where he now resides.

I'd like to see a tribute single released that contains "Waiting For Tonight" and "A Face In The Crowd", to me that would be a single with 2 "A" sides!

Oh, "Straight Into Darkness" is one of my favorites. It just nails that feeling of "I don't know if this will work out, but I'm gonna do it anyway," then mashes it with a tinge of regret/sadness for what has happened. They played the song during the opening set of the 2008 (?) tour in Grand Rapids and I about screamed my lungs out!

So many but right now 'Straight into Darkness" is on my brain. I think Long After Dark is a under rated album all around.

I know exactly what you are saying.  I felt better knowing he was alive.

I grew up with him.  He's a few years older than me, and I know what you mean about the old timers dying out.  They're irreplaceable.

I believe her when she said her heart will never get over this.  When you get older, you just don't recover from emotional trauma and setbacks the way you did when you were young.  Stevie is pretty resilient, but this might do her in too.

I had a dream about Tom two nights ago.  The first and probably the last.
I was watching him run through an obstacle course again and again and remember thinking "Good Lord!  This man is going to kill himself."
    Then, I woke up.
I wonder what about Tom's life that my subconscious translated into an obstacle course.

Marion,  do you have a pill organizer?  Having one helps.  I know how you feel.  I felt overwhelmed too when I first had to do it.  It did get easy over time.

I don't think he was addicted either. Could've been something as simply as accidentally double-dosing. It's easy enough to do. Severe pain really impairs your judgement.

Mike Campbell's guitar saved my sanity this past year. I owe that man a lot as well as Tom.

Still having a hard time shaking off his death.  It seems to hurt worse now.
