Lorra got a reaction from SG in Prayers for Tom Petty - 1950-2017
Just watched that video.  You're right.  I never noticed that in any of the last tour videos.
I got the impression from that speech that he knew at some level within himself that he may not have long to live.  He seemed in awe of his own life and how incredible it had turned out.

Yep, I agree. Love it! Also, very good and intense live song.

The warbly intro to Fooled Again was pretty common during their early (1976-1978) shows. I'd argue some of their early live material almost delves into prog-rock. "Dog on the Run" (not to be confused with the similarly-titled track from Southern Accents) also has some of the same sort of oddness. Almost puts me into the mind of Vanilla Fudge's crazy extended rock arrangements.

(I apologize if this seems a little disjointed.)

Love the song. And Mike's little "Star Trek" riff with the ebow during the intro on that live clip.  This song has always been a favorite.

Did you read Petty: The Biography by Warren Zanes? That's where all of the information is on it.
Long story short, I think it was mostly due to his separation from his family, feeling isolated, lost, like a failure, and trying to numb the pain of the depression that crept in.
As far as I know, Tom did not tour while he was on heroin. He started around '96 and got clean before the Echo tour. Howie was using during the Echo tour. Howie was using as far back as '85. Tom got clean via a rehab that knocked him out while his body detoxed.
“I probably spent a month not getting out of bed, just waking up and going, ‘Oh fuck.’ Lying there,” said Petty. “The only thing that stopped the pain was the drugs. But it was stupid. I’d never come up against anything that was bigger than me, something that I couldn’t control. But it starts ruining your life. It went for a while before Dana and my family got involved. And Echo come in the middle of that mess. I’m lucky I came through. Not everyone does,” (Zanes 260). "
Doctors told the Heartbreakers they were enabling Howie because they made sure he never went through withdrawals while on the Echo tour so that he could continue to perform. They let him go because the doctors said they should distance themselves for being enablers. Obviously this lead to the feeling that they should have done more to help Howie, but hindsight is 20/20.
I've worked with someone who I later found out was on heroin. I honestly didn't notice until he told me and showed me the track marks. He was coming down, but not in withdrawals. I honestly couldn't tell he had done heroin. There are some good resources now, especially with the drug epidemic so huge, on how to recognize if someone you know/love is using.

Tom was very original in his style of dressing, I'm not keen on the word as I think it's overused but he a was cool dresser.

I prefer to watch live shows that I've downloaded or have the DVDs of.  There's something about all the different guitars that get me.

I don't have the luxury of time to do that.  It took me three days just to watch the TPATH doc.
Oh what I wouldn't give many times for my younger and care-free days.

Lorra, Just go to the link below and click the download on the left side (blue). The top one is for 32 bit PC's (older) and the bottom one is for newer 64 bit PC's. Don't worry about the MD5 or SHA1. If you don't know if you have 32 or 64 bit, look on the side of your PC, the label should tell you what you have. Just download and save it to your desktop, if it asks you if you want to create a shortcut icon, say yes. That should take care of things.

If you haven't already a program to download these, I would suggest 3D YouTube Downloader.
Unless you prefer command-line applications, in which case youtube-dl might be more to your liking.

This is from October 2002, just days after the release of "The Last DJ".  Tom and the band did a 2-night stand at The Olympic Theater in Los Angeles, and it was simulcast to theaters around the country.  I recall paying $10 to see it in Seattle.  They put out a DVD from (I guess) the best versions from both nights.  The website had a thing where the first 100 people that pre-ordered the DVD, received a copy signed by Tom. I got one of those, as did probably many other people here.
As far as it being a grand time in Tom's life - I wouldn't expect that to be the case. The record is a rather melancholy look back at better times.  George Harrison had died less than a year previous, and Howie had been fired from the band, and would pass away a couple of months after this show.
Still, it's one of my very favorite records in his entire catalog.
