  1. Im sure I look like an uber geek in the photo - after Kevin sends me a copy I'll take a look at it and ponder posting it LOL! I think Ill take a photo of the signed poster and post that later on today if I get motivated. Some of the artists even drew little cartoon instruments next to their signatures I spent an astonishing portion of the performance sitting there in the shadows amongst the audience completely transfixed, my eyes closed.... drawn into and completely immersed in the music, wishing to soak up every note. It was just that good. You will find no venue that celebrates music more highly than Largo, and in that kind of environment, the artists shine ever so brightly. For a few short hours it was paradise on LaCienega. Next to the lingerie shops, strip clubs and roaring traffic sits a little patch of Holy musical ground. Who would have thought it?
  2. Regarding Glen, it sounds like he was injured pretty badly. What I heard was that his injuries involve lacerations caused by some kind of glass coffee table incident gone terribly wrong. Sean was there when it happened and applied first aid and attempted to drive Glen to a hospital .... (The artists shared a telling of a version of the story on stage last night. It was a 'lighthearted' version - well it was as lighthearted as possible given the circumstances which sound pretty scary.) So Glen is going to be healing up for a little while it sounds like.... When coffee tables attack!
  3. That was a ball - too tired to write much.... I love the new club's layout but we snickered when we checked out the neighborhood as we waited outside for the doors to open. Two doors down you have a shop called 'Trashy Lingerie', while across the street you have a strip club, a mattress store, and a small cafe. I figured that a guy could have a lot of fun in that neighborhood given the abundance of raw materials. And that might be a great topic for another post..... errrrrr When they opened the doors we walked in thru some iron gates to an inviting courtyard. There was a table where you could buy some cds and even cookies and hot tea The courtyard and the club itself is filled with works of art. Some mannequin based artworks were placed in the courtyard, and prints of some exceptional photographs were placed throughout the club. I really tried hard not to drool on the photos. I did miss the food and the bar (the new club has neither) but I felt comfortable the moment I walked into the place. It has a very nice layout and it draws you in to the alcove area and then into the performance space. The stage is larger than at the old venue but they managed to fill it with performers tonight. The sound was great and the performance space reminded me a little of a vaudeville theater. A great cause tonight, and really wonderful music. Ill write more if Athena and I can compare notes and get it right. I REALLY liked the acoustics at the new club. It turned out that the sound guy who normally handles the board couldnt be there due to an emergency, and so another guy stepped in and ran the board - he had never seen the board before so it was his first time LOL! I would have never known if Sean Watkins hadn't told me after the show. I got to chat a little with Sean and Benmont because they surprised us and auctioned off an event poster signed by all the artists to raise some money for Glen. Anyhow, to cut to the chase, Athena and I have another poster to frame I just expected to go out after the gig and pick up the poster in the lobby - but what I didn't expect was to also discover Sean and Benmont relaxing there too, greeting the members of the audience, being cool, and doing whatever it is that artists do after a gig So we got to chat a little - we passed on our hopes for Glen's speedy recovery and the artists were all so thankful for everyone coming out and supporting the cause. Kevin had his camera and he snapped a photo of us with Benmont and the poster And that music..... There is something about Sara Watkins voice that moves my soul. Combine that with the entire band's considerable talents and the result is delightful and even awe inspiring at times. Even now the melodies are playing in my head and I get a little warm and tingly thinking about it The new Largo absolutely maintains the intimacy of the old location and improves upon the acoustics. Same no electronics policy as at the last location so if you want to meet the blonde at the other end of the courtyard, you may just have to walk up and ask her what she thought of the show instead of texting her Think of it as a little Analog oasis in a mean 'ol digital world. I love it.
  4. Hoping Hubby feels better soon. We will miss you at the gig tonight! (My first time at the new digs - can't wait to check it out!)
  5. Nuts..... She saw the rubber gloves and freaked. If you see her tell her I was just kidding OK?
  6. Gotta go get cold drugs for Athena - Then I am going to come back home and play Doctor.
  7. ^ ROFL! [edit: Nah they'll find a way to screw him too probably!]
  8. Another shot from the Joshua Tree Roots Music Festival
  9. A few more of David Rawlings from the gig. Peace
  10. I'd go for a zaxxon game for sure..... Used to spend a scary amount of quarters on those damn things in arcades back in the day. Actually got such a high score once that all the digits rolled over from 9's back to 0's. Only stopped when a guy pointed out I was bleeding on the machine.... Just had 4 wisdom teeth pulled and they loaded me up on pain pills.... Dont really remember driving to or from the arcade very well but I remember that game flashing 'give up' on the screen over and over as I got close to rolling the score over LOL! Got home, realized that those pain pills were scary and threw the rest out. Never could duplicate the high score.
  11. How about a twofer from Pink Floyd's Meddle Album: 1. Fearless 2. San Tropez
  12. Hmmm, maybe I should quit smoking.... No matter what the website says, I'm pretty sure I'm past my expiration date already. Still on the shelf though (only slightly moldered). Eyes are starting to go though. That part sucks.
  13. From the Joshua Tree Roots Music Festival - Enjoy!
  14. "Death by cheesy rice buns" Source: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/10/24/eating_constestant_dies_during_match/ " The sport of competitive eating was given a shocking reminder yesterday that gorging oneself with a daunting amounts of greasy food in an extremely short period of time may have negative effects on health. A Taiwanese graduate student vying for the "Big Stomach King" contest at Dayeh University died on Tuesday just before he could claim the winning title. The 23-year-old had chowed himself ahead of 30 other teams by consuming two buns filled with rice and cheese and helping himself to some of his teammates food as well. He was on course to win the annual campus event when he passed out and died after "relentless" vomiting, Reuters reports. "I can't say why he died," said Huang Te-hsiang, the university's dean of affairs. "He had been in the contest before. He was a strong guy." Had the student been victorious, he would have won NT$2,000 (~$60, £ 38). Taiwan's education ministry has barred further campus-based eating contests while it conducts an investigation." All I can do is shake my head........
  15. I thought he had kind-of 'far away' eyes that you might appreciate
  16. You are all welcome Thank you to the artists and the venue for allowing photography!!!! Peace
  17. Mike Campbell playing the opening 'scratch' in 'Roadrunner'. Marc Ford is watching from backstage
  18. Mike wailing on his Doozie... Marc Ford jammin' I did manage to catch a glimpse of Matt behind the drum kit -
  19. No need to apologize Nurk!!! Playing with George would be an honor for anyone, there is no question about that! My amusement was in regard to the comment made by another person, and didn't have anything to do with what you wrote. I found your comments fascinating. I guess I am guilty of assuming that Tom and Mike know all there is to know about anything with strings.... Learning that George taught them some new tricks produced some great mental images of the three of them jamming together. I can picture Tom and Mike's faces lighting up as they learned new stuff. I think a person would have to get up pretty early in the morning to surprise Tom or Mike!
  20. I am hoping I just took the person's comment wrong. Mike just a good Rhythm guitar player? Sheesh! What exactly would it take then to be a good Lead guitar player? Shooting picks and strings out of his rear end? Maybe playing so fast that the fretboard bursts into flames? Playing so good that panties go flying for miles around every gig? I'm confused about this Rhythm guitar player comment! LOL!
  21. Once upon a time I was talking to an industry person regarding an upcoming DK performance and the topic shifted to Mike's guitar playing. The guy said something like "Mike Campbell is a great Rhythm guitar player" - Well I about choked because I felt that this description didn't do Mike justice at all. A Rhythm player? What prey-tell would it take for someone to be considered a Lead guitar player if M.C. does not qualify? LOL! Well, maybe the comment wasn't so crazy after all That is when M.C. is playing with the likes of George Harrison. (Give me a M.C. lead any day of the week!, and TWO on the weekends. It doesn't get much better that that.)
  22. OMG The Tubes?!?!!?! Last time I saw them was at Cal State Fullerton - they played the gym! It must have been back in 1985!
