  1. Thanks folks - yes some things in life truly suck, but I don't think anyone's life is devoid of tragedy. I only mentioned what happened because it relates to having a firearm in the house. I wasn't seeking pity for what happened when I was a kid and hope that anyone who has (or is considering having) weapons in the home will keep them secure and realize that sometimes weapons end up being used in ways that were never anticipated. My mom had serious problems with depression and back then the treatment was not as well understood, and there was serious stigma associated with seeking treatment. There still is stigma associated with seeking mental health treatment. Fact is everyone has problems sometimes and realizing that you need some help to work things out is so very important. Dont let the fear of how others may react keep you from getting the aid that will help you and your loved ones. I was only a kid back then, but what happened changed our family forever. Not sure if I will ever have a firearm in our home, but once again I completely support the right to responsibly keep and bear arms, however when dealing with issues of life and death, there are somber responsibilities that come attached and those should be carefully considered. Please, if you have kids, secure your weapons. A family friend (a kid) back when I was a kid ended up shooting himself accidentally. It was a 'freak' accident, and he completely recovered, but it was a very close call. His neighbor was a Police officer. He came back from a long shift and did not properly secure his service revolver. His children found it and the weapon ended up outside where my friend found it. He thought it was a toy. One thing led to another and he handled it and inadvertently put a bullet right through his hand. Amazingly it missed everything vital and he fully recovered. It became the center of a major cover-up on the part of the police department because they were quite embarrassed over the entire incident. They came to the home where the incident happened and tore the walls apart looking for the slug. They never found it. We went there later in the day to visit the family and offer our support. While there I had to use the restroom and when I looked into the toilet bowl I saw a bullet there - it had passed through Scott's hand, bounced off a wall, and ended up in the toilet bowl. It became the evidence that proved what happened. These two incidents turned me off of having weapons in the home, however there are also ample stories of people defending themselves with weapons - so even after what I have seen in my own life I would never advocate banning guns entirely. At least not until the 'bad guys' stop using them too.
  2. My dad owned a .22 rifle when I was a kid - its the weapon I used when I learned to shoot. My mom took her life with it when I was 12. I still support the right for people to own guns, but statistically speaking I'm not sure if your family is safer with or without one in the house. Suicide sucks. Think about those you love before doing anything rash folks. It really f'ed up our family. Peace

  4. Source: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/11/13/cop_tasers_self/ "Texas Cop Tasers Himself" That has got to be highly annoying - and something his brothers and sisters on the force will keep reminding him of for years! Ouch! (See the link for a video taken by a helicopter overhead!)
  5. Source: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/11/06/ginger_nuts/ I ran across this story and so, in my continuing effort to keep you informed regarding the stranger stories on the net, I offer the following: " Cream drummer may flash ginger nuts in court Baker prepared to strip in £30k fraud case Veteran drummer Ginger Baker has declared he is willing to drop his trousers in court to prove he never got jiggy with a woman accused of defrauding him of £30,000, the Telegraph reports. Baker, 69, now lives in South Africa, where he befriended Lindiwe Noko at the bank where she worked as a clerk. He called in cops when £30k went awol from his account, and Noko subsequently claimed she and the former Cream sticksman were lovers and he gave her the cash as a gift. Not so, insists Baker, who is now prepared to whip off his strides to prove the point. He explained: "I've a scar that only a woman who had a thing with me would know. It's there and she doesn't know it's there." The case is due to be heard in January. Watch this space for a ginger nuts update." Roasted and Salted, or Raw.... You decide!
  6. The winds here South of L.A. just picked up big time - I hope they are not doing the same up in Santa Barbara. That is the last thing they need right now.
  7. Yes I support the right of anyone to peacefully protest anything they want. (Personally I think banning male / male and female / female marriage is truly silly. Something makes me think that some folks are afraid they'll 'catch the gay')
  8. No but I am SURE that I can find a pair of shoes that need some work And Ill be sure to check out the art when I am there!
  9. Isn't that track Jerry Lee's High School Confidential? Or did Jerry Lee adapt it from Gene Vincent? But you are right about the performance - in fact I got to mention how much I loved the sound of the streaming version of that track on the mudcrutchmusic site to Benmont last Thursday. I mentioned that his piano was a little lost in the sound there at the Troubadour (I was there that night), and so getting to hear the clear recording from the sound board was just wonderful! What a cover to allow Benmont to stretch out huh? Wow!
  10. I'm having a few 'flashbacks' to the loss of the great FM stations KMET, and KSCA here in Los Angeles. It is a little early to make a final decision, but it sure seems to me that the play list has changed on Deep Tracks, and there sure is a lot more DJ talking than I remember before. As one who has totally given up on FM radio (with the possible exception of Jim Ladd's free form sets on KLOS in the wee hours) I had found a very happy home on XM. I heard tracks that I probably never heard on FM radio before, and truly enjoyed the tremendous diversity of music and artists there. Just the other day I heard a song that made my brain go 'CLICK' - The melody had been 'borrowed' by Mike Campbell and included in some of his surf Guitar Medleys. I heard the song on the radio, got a HUGE grin and commented, 'That is where Mike got it from!'. If I could have written down the artist's name and song title I would have gone out to purchase it. That is how I used to get introduced to 'new' music - via the radio. Realizing that changes are sometimes hard to adjust to at first, I will temper my disappointment for now, but it honestly feels like someone reached into my being and ripped out something vital. We all just knew this 'merger' was not in the listeners best interests! Damn the FCC for allowing it. If Sirius / XM becomes a satellite-borne clone of the crap on the FM dial, it will be so very sad. I honestly don't know where else to turn for the 'good stuff'. And yes, losing XMX and the all day re-broadcasts of Tom's show means that I may never again hear Tom's comforting DJ voice coming thru the car radio. It was wonderful having Tom as my co-pilot on the road. Never imagined losing that. Sirius / XM - please get your poop together, OK? I purchased multi-year subscriptions because I loved the sound of real radio again, but if my subscriptions were to come up for renewal today, I might not re-up after the events of the last couple of days. Thankfully I have a little time before my accounts need to be renewed, and that will allow me to see where all of this is going.

All Greg Papazian had to do was reach into the shoe box that for 35 years held a one-of-a-kind photographic record of Los Angeles in its glittery rock 'n' roll heyday. He was a high school junior when he turned a visit to an Allman Brothers concert at the Sunset Strip's Whisky a Go Go into a gig of his own -- as club photographer for the legendary hub of Los Angeles' rock scene....." 12. Source: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/11/12/batman_city_sues_batman/ "The mayor of Batman, Turkey, is suing Warner Bros. and The Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan for using the Cape Crusader's name without the city's permission. Variety reports Huseyin Kalkan, mayor of the predominantly Kurdish town located in the Batman province of Turkey on the Batman River, is preparing to file a series of charges against Nolan and Warner Bros. for royalties from the blockbuster film. "There is only one Batman in the world," Kalkan said. "The American producers used the name of our city without informing us." He also hopes to pin a number of unsolved murders along with the town's female suicide rate on the psychological impact the film's success had on Batman residence, the publication said. (Why so serious?) Kalkan claims to have evidence that will prove the city of Batman was founded before the 1939 debut of DC Comic's superhero by the same name. Why the city is complaining now about its name being used for masked justice may have something to do with The Dark Knight having grossed over $994 million worldwide so far. Of course, one could also speculate the city could have figured this out much sooner with the assistance of Batman, the world's greatest detective. Alas, therein lies the crux of the problem. Warner Bros. said it hasn't been served with a lawsuit yet from Kalkan...." Holy Legal Fees Batman! What is next? Suing Turkeys for stealing the name of Turkey? Nothing like a heart warming story like this to get us all into the holiday mood!
  13. Our DirecTV box hiccupped about 30 minutes before the show came on - So I rebooted it and paced back and forth nervously for about 15 minutes while it buzzed and whirred and finally it came back to life. It was almost as stressful as those internet pre-sales! Just the thing to get you back into the groove of concert season!
  14. Alas, the councilman was 'nabbed by the fuzz'. OK is there some strange abnormal psych thing involving peeing on concertgoers? I keep hearing about this happening.... If so is it covered by the Americans with Disabilities Act? (I'm sorry, I have peeslexia!) Will there soon be peeing and non-peeing sections? I need to know so I get tickets in the right part of the arena!
  15. Maybe this is the guy Emmie had a problem with years ago.... "A Jersey City councilman has reportedly been arrested for urinating on a crowd of concertgoers from the balcony of a Washington D.C. nightclub. The New York Daily News reports in Sunday's editions that two-term Jersey City councilman Steve Lipski has been charged with simple assault. The newspaper says 44-year-old Lipski was removed from a place called the 9:30 Club on Friday night. That's after club staffers saw him relieve himself onto the crowd from a second floor balcony during a concert by a Grateful Dead tribute band. Messages left at Lipski's council office, and a Jersey City listing under his name were not immediately returned." 18. Months? A Year? I really don't know - it sounded very serious to me and I could easily imagine many Months of recoup and physical therapy but the truth is I have no idea at all. Hopefully, knowing that he's got a ton of people pulling for him will help speed the process.
  19. (From a CNN article on the pets of the presidents)Link: http://www.mudcrutch.com/forum/newthread.php?do=newthread&f=9 The White House gators Herbert Hoover wanted to put a chicken in every pot, a car in every garage, and ... a gator in the Oval Office? It's true. Hoover owned a slew of dogs, but those weren't his only pets. His second son, Allan Henry Hoover, owned a pair of gators that were occasionally allowed to wander around the White House grounds. Sound crazy? Blame John Quincy Adams for setting the precedent. The sixth president also had a pet gator. His was a gift from the Marquis de Lafayette; it lived in a bathroom in the East Room of the White House. According to some reports, he enjoyed using the gator to scare his guests. Guess Tom Petty isn't the only one with a gator on the lawn!
