  1. As others have said, California is a very big state and knowing how long you are here and how long you are willing to drive would help us to provide suggestions.

FYI driving from San Simeon thru Big Sur on Hwy 1 takes hours and hours and hours. Its twisty turny 1 lane road clinging to cliffs along the Pacific Ocean - very beautiful but the driver will only be seeing the road. I would leave an entire day to make that drive starting from San Simeon, and San Simeon is already 4-5 hours North of Los Angeles so factor that in too if L.A. is your starting point.

But in general the state gets more beautiful the farther North you go.

Places closer to LA that might be of interest include Laguna Beach (check out a sushi place called 242 on Pacific Coast Highway.)

There are a couple of Music Photography galleries around - look for 'Morrison Hotel Gallery' and bring a checkbook.

Santa Monica, Malibu, Topanga are all within a short drive of one another and make for good sight seeing (beware freeway traffic congestion). (If you run into Topanga Cowgirl, tell her we all said hello!)

When you are not seeing The Dirty Knobs, check out 'Largo at the Coronet Theater' - Sara and Sean Watkins and Benmont Tench (and company) play there fairly regularly on Thursday nights and will blow you away. Others play there also most every night and the venue is top notch. We were there last night!

Of course San Francisco is beautiful, and if you make it that far North you might also want to check out Yosemite or Kings Canyon National Parks, all of which are accessible from the Pacific side of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Or you could approach from the Eastern side via Hwy 395 and Owens Valley. If you take that route you can check out volcanoes (Red Mountain), ghost towns (Bode) and Mono Lake (the site of some of the photography from Pink Floyd's 'wish you were here' album). Don't feed the snakes.

When are you coming out? We can try to arrange an earthquake for you!

"ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- So much for Southern hospitality.

When Pearl Jam -- the Seattle, Washington-based grunge rock band -- was in Atlanta late last month, bass guitar player Jeff Ament and a band employee were mugged outside a recording studio, a police report shows..... "

Man that sucks. Arment got whacked upside the head when he tried to flee. Sounds like he will be OK, but you gotta wonder if this will change his outlook....

Sounds like that isolated studio needs some big security thugs working the parking lot to me.

"Oompa-Loompa and Tinky Winky cuffed for drunken brawl - Spiderman also weighs into holiday camp scrap

Devon cops yesterday cuffed an Oompa-Loompa, Tinky Winky and Spiderman following a drunken fancy dress punch-up at a Devon holiday camp.

According to the Sun, officers were called to the Welcome Family Holiday Park in Dawlish at around 1am yesterday after 20 pissed holidaymakers laid into each other, in the process allegedly injuring two stewards.

The Oompa-Loompa - reportedly a 47-year-old dad - was with two others "kept in police cells overnight after being quizzed on suspicion of violent disorder".

A staff member told the Sun: “It was rather comical in some ways because of the fancy dress costumes people were wearing. You don’t expect to see Teletubby Tinky Winky and Spiderman in the middle of things like this.”

He concluded: “It was a case of too much booze being knocked back and then something happened which kicked things off.”

Police confirmed they'd been able to identify the alleged perps of the fisticuffs “by what they were wearing”.

Disappointingly, the Sun does not answer the most pressing question: Whether it's the Oompa-Loompas or the Teletubbies who prevailed in the almighty skirmish."

Who do you think would win a Teletubby vs. Ommpa Loompa brawl? My money is on the 'Loompas - all that sugar in their bloodstream should give them an advantage.

  4. so cute! that last picture is the best!

Heck yes! What a cute little guy. I can feel the claws and the sharp kitten teeth! Good luck! :)

When our cat Zuke was a kitten she would sneak into our bed and try to sleep lying across Athena's throat. It was like having a kitty stole!

The best part is Athena is terribly ticklish there so there was a lot of amusement watching them together.

  5. Wow. I lived right there for 4 years..... Thats weird hearing familiar street names.

I don't have any idea what you can possibly do in the face of a firestorm like that except get out of the way. Well, maybe the runway and the marsh at Goleta airport will help stop it (crossing fingers)

  6. Ref,

Please let us know if there is anything we can do to help besides the good wishes we are all sending to the fire fighters and everyone impacted by the fires - and lets not forget the wildlife too.

You are all right - the fires seem to have been getting worse and worse over the past few years. We live miles away from the hills here, but last year the fires got so close the edge of the evacuation area was only a few minutes walk from our house and burning embers were raining down from the sky. It was very unnerving.

I had joked that by now there would be nothing left to burn but sadly that is far from the truth.

Athena and I spent the afternoon in Isla Vista after a recent SB gig and looking up from the beach towards the Santa Ynez Mountains we could see vast areas that were scarred from the recent fires. The great bands of verdant hillside growth I learned to recognize over the years were replaced with a patchwork quilt of damaged or destroyed areas - I have spent a lot of time up there and yet I have never before seen that kind of devastation over such a large area.

  7. I was working in the yard not too long ago and was using the garden hose. Zoe our Russian Blue started checking out the hose because she was curious, and I gave the hose a quick tug and she freaked and jumped about 4 feet straight up into the air.

    I laughed my butt off.

Something about snake-like objects that cats have an instinctive fear of.

Great fun in the backyard if you time it right :)
