To get back on topic.... Man I wish I had all the answers -
One thing that I have experienced from a photographic perspective - now that the photographs are in digital form it is a lot easier to mess with them in post processing. Sure you could perform a lot of darkroom tricks but it was much more difficult or impossible to do some of the things possible in the digital realm.
But just because it is possible to process the image some way doesn't mean it improves the art by doing so. I could tell you about countless hours spent trying to decide if I was pushing it too much when processing an image....
I think the same goes for audio - We all know about the 'loudness war' and excessive compression applied to some recordings - and I'm not saying that this couldnt have happened in the analog realm, but in general the more processing you apply to the thing, the more you can screw up.
Back to images, I know its possible to over-do it. I think the audio guys sometimes get too wrapped up in all their tricks and forget to keep it simple.
Some of the most impressive recordings I have are essentially direct to disc with little or no processing involved.
You want to save rock and roll, how about making recordings that preserve the dynamic nature of the art. Lets hear the rawness of a bar room performance if thats what the artist intended. Don't pasturize the sound in post.
Also I think there is an entire generation of people who might not know real rock and roll (that played by great musicians) if it snuck up and goosed them in the ass. That generation has been so overdosed on crappy music that they never had a chance to know anything else. I know that sounds arrogant, but seriously - the endless parade of boy bands and angel whores with pre-fabricated plastic factory sound has so lowered the expectations of the generation in question that they don't seek out the good stuff.
I think we have to educate that generation's ears, and a good way to start is by exposing as many of them as you can to 'the good stuff'. Thats one good reason for bands like TP&HB and Bruce Springsteen to play gigs like the super bowl. Lots of eyes and ears out there at those gigs. Ill bet there were people there for whom a bulb lit up. I know those band's album sales spiked big time after those performances.
Lets get the good stuff out to as many ears as we can. Maybe even have an official week where everyone calls their local FM radio station and makes requests for the good stuff. Kind of like support your local record store but for FM radio. Might be a good reminder to those stations that are stuck playing from a static play list.
And right about now the advertisers would sure notice if a shitload of new listeners seemed to be showing up interested in more musical diversity.
And while we are at it maybe we can get those same stations to devote a little time to playing some music from new upcoming bands that seem worthy. When was the last time you heard something from a new artist on the FM radio? Seems pretty rare around here

Sure its 'Risky' to play something new and unproven. The suits hate that and try to avoid risk. But rock and roll isn't about taking the easy safe path. But by playing the same shit over and over and over you are strangling the art-form. That shows no respect for the sustainability of it! There is such a thing as too safe. For cryin' out loud take a little risk and play something that doesn't fit the formula once and a while would you?

When I started dating Athena, she was a 'spinner'
OK now that the laughter has subsided, no it wasn't THAT kind of spinner - she worked at Laser Video spinning the photo resist onto the glass masters they used to make laser discs. This was LONg before CD burners were commonplace, and the company used glass and silver and a million dollar home built mastering machine that rode on a cushion of air so that nearby trains and trucks didn't shake it and cause it to mis-track.
Eventually she worked her way up the company ladder, but they relocated the company out of state..... Cant remember if she left because of that, or for some other reason, but at one time she would inspect the glass masters (with the silver coating) looking for pinholes. Back then our eyes were better.
Truth be known we met long before CDs - we both went to the same high school and we saw each other while we were both hanging out where the 'bad kids' hung out on campus and smoked. I was playing my guitar with a friend named Glen and I saw her - with her blazing red hair - and I would have walked up to her and asked her out but I couldn't put two coherent words together when a pretty girl was involved - that and as we all know, red in the animal kingdom means the critter is venomous.
Thankfully I built up an immunity eventually.

Hey, lets not throw the baby out with the bath water - I like digital provided that it hasn't been turned into a lossy compressed ghost of the way it really sounded.
I dont miss warped vinyl, pops and clicks and having to carefully clean my records. Cringing when some dolt dropped my expensive turntable the stylus onto the record, and worst of all trying to store all those albums without having them deteriorate in the heat.
There has to be a compromise that works and the mudcrutch cd that used little or no compression is a great place to start!
-
yes - whoever took that one I posted didnt have a 7 footer standing in front of them - good shot of Benmont's solo - Mike's too at the beginning of the song.
It was a great show, and a wonderful way for us to be introduced to the ABB live!
We will absolutely catch them every time we can when they come to town.

I told the dentist she needed a combination dentist office / bar - that way I could get hammered on Margaritas and be in a relaxed state for the dental work. She laughed, although its probably not as crazy an idea as it seems.
Not responding to pain killers sounds like a major problem. As much as I hate the injections, I can't imagine having to be put under for minor dental work like fillings etc. That would freak me out.

Here is a goodie that popped up.
-
^ Us too Lizzie! Its been too long

-
I wish I could feel my face. The stuff the dentist stabbed me with should wear off eventually.....
But for now, it feels like my face is melting

Got ours for Friday night. Wish we could be there Saturday too, but we know the Knobs will be in good hands there at Cozys even if we aren't there

Correction: Mike and Tom were playing Gibsons. I need my eyes checked I guess.
-
^ LOL!!!!!
I know what you mean! Athena and I went to see a concert last year and ZZ Top was playing before 'Maroon 5'. ZZ Top finished a great set and we decided to stick around to see what Maroon 5 was like. Part way into the first song we looked at each other and wondered what the hell we were doing there! We bailed after that.
-
I have to get Athena to enter this raffle. That guitar would look so great next to the other one

(I don't know how she does it!)
Danny Ill be in touch.

OMFG!
OK I don't know where to begin.....
Despite the fact that I have loved the Allman Brothers music for as long as I can remember, I have never seen them perform live. Well, the universe cried out for balance and so it ended up that Athena and I had some 'work' to do. This was going to be fun too!
We started by seeing Derek Trucks perform last weekend. It was a last minute thing on our part and as a result we were so far away from the stage it wasn't possible to make out much detail... but it sure sounded good!
So I guess tonight was the next step on the cosmic journey.... We were drawn in a tighter orbit.
(Here is a shot from Sunday's performance showing Mike Mattison and Derek Trucks - its a quick snap taken with a long lens while I was running down a walkway so sorry about the quality)

Later on on Sunday, guess who I caught Athena hanging out with?
Actually he was signing a few things for fans and we caught him right at the end as we walked by by coincidence. He was tired, we were tired, and yet he stopped what he was doing, said hello, and posed for a photo with a fan.Just the nicest guy. Salt of the earth.
Tonight we were nice and close to the stage thanks to Athena's luck stumbling onto Ticketbastard right after a ticket drop. 2nd row outside the pit - just a little outside guitar pick flinging range, but easily close enough to make out interactions between artists and capture all kinds of other little details during the gig. We were really in for a treat.
Mostly I was fascinated all night - actually mesmerized would probably be more accurate - as I watched Derek and Warren Haynes play their guitars.
And their styles are so different -
It almost didn't seem real, the way Derek plays. Never used a pick as far as I could see - just his fingers moving the strings on his red Gibson SG (the same guitar he played last weekend), and when he used the slide I think I had a guitargasm.
Actually I think we all did.
We were in store for a couple of very special additional treats - the first when Bruce Willis was called up and played harp on a couple of songs. He was actually pretty good, but no match for those guitars
Still there was a camaraderie there on stage. Finally They called Benmont Tench up and he joined in 'The Sky is Crying'.
I'm done. Its all over. Seriously. ABB, Benmont Tench..... PERFECTION.
There was this glow about Benmont - although I could be wrong, I got the distinct impression that here was a man realizing a life long dream of playing with the ABB. This couldn't possibly have been the first time! Could it?
Holy crap, Benmont's grin was HUGE. His fingers were flying. Just scorching. We were cheering, Warren was looking at Benmont and smiling at him, and Derek was.... well, Derek isn't very animated, but he was smiling on the inside!

The band stretched the song out a bit to permit some jamming and they passed the jam around from player to player, around and around.
They were having a lot of fun up there!
Next they called up Mike Campbell and Tom Petty. Both came out on stage with DARK black sunglasses, and black guitars. If I recall correctly Mike was carrying a Gretsch and Tom had a Gibson. They played a couple of songs together with the Allmans including 'Highway 61' - Tom sharing singing duties as he alternated singing verses with the Allmans, and Mike taking his turn in the guitar solo rotation when it came around.
Picture Tom Petty, Derek Trucks, Mike Campbell, and Warren Haynes all standing side by side on a single stage. Stick a fork in me I'm done.
The only sad part was they only played a couple of songs with Tom and Mike, and they really didn't do anything flashy - more like they were just jamming with their buddies. I wish they had more time to play, but who knows what the future brings?

Well, I hope some of this makes sense - I'm hitting the sack now. And I'm going to savor that image of all that musical greatness on stage.
And how does Derek make his guitar sound like that?
Dang I want to see that guy play again!LOL! Black sunglasses. At night. Rock and Roll.
Peace
-
Can you imagine if they played 'Above Water'?
OK it'll never happen, but man that would be a dream come true.
-
4.1 - not even enough to soil my shorts.

-
^ Do you know for sure he can't?Unless I strap it to my hairy leg with duct tape......... LOL!
(No I am not going to try to sneak it in, but if Tom is reading this and has an extra photo pass, I'm available. Well, I was going to wash my hair tonight, but maybe I can fit in a show......)

-
There was just a ticket drop - Athena and I are going!!!!! Yeee Hawwww!

Interesting topic....
Seems to me that there are some obvious lines that shouldn't be crossed.... Employees shouldn't divulge confidential or proprietary company info this way, and would probably be well advised to let the company PR people handle company PR.
Of course, if you are independently wealthy, and don't really need the job, then by all means tell us all what you really think of your employer
LOL!But I don't think employers should be sifting thru social networking sites to pry into the details of employee's lives. But you better realize that they do it. I think it stinks.
(I was going to say pry into employee's PRIVATE lives, but once you post something online for all to see it isn't very private now is it? And technically there is nothing wrong with an employer scooping up info available to the general public, so the burden to maintain privacy really falls on the individual. And in the digital age, once something is posted on the net it is impossible to make it go away. Its kind of like digital herpes, so be careful where you play!)
(Hi Boss!)

I would have concerns about any electronic book reader that is built on a proprietary platform or builds in DRM.
It might be greener than paper books for voracious readers, but won't those e-book readers start filling up landfills in a year or two if their life-cycle is similar to all the other electronic gizmos we use now? At least paper books degrade nicely.
-
^ I agree with you!
I had been enjoying TP&HB music for a long time as part of the FM Radio scene (and lets not forget their MTV videos), but what really 'set me off' was the first time I got to see them perform live in a small venue.
There was an honesty and intimacy, and above all, FUN! to the performance. It blew me away, and hadn't previously translated to radio or video very well.
So the seeds had been planted many years before, but the love of the band really sprouted after seeing them perform live.
-
^ Isn't that a great documentary?

Welcome to the Farm DD!
-
^ Oh there is plenty to see (assuming it isn't foggy) but the drive is hellish unless you are in a sports car and it handles like its on rails.
Also, there is a small Marc Chagall art gallery in Big Sur right off the highway

[edit: oops, I mean there is plenty to see between San Simeon and Monterey. After that I dont know
Probably nothing but hippies
