  1. Wow, there's a lot of different views here. Thanks for that.

I live in a very hispanic area in California. My problem with people not speaking English here is that in school, the standards are so low! It is so sad and embarrassing how low the standards are and how many kids fall through the system. I have had kids in classes that I've known for years, not be able to read in English. They just couldn't read! Their writing is also terrible because they mix the two languages, and the teachers don't do anything about it. It seems that the teachers are told to ignore it. What I'm sick of is having to dumb myself down for these people when I have to take regular classes just because we have to spend extra time on something they don't understand.

I respect their culture and heritage, but I believe if someone is going to be living here the rest of their lives, they need to speak/read the dominant language. It's expected in every other country.

We have a similar problem with turkish kids here in Germany.

  2. ..but they would sometimes speak their native language when all together. Growing up, I loved hearing them speak that language, I only wish I had learned more...

My grandmas spoke a north German dialekt most of the time, my parents did sometimes. I loved to hear it but never learned to speak it. With the times they did it less and less. I can understand the dialekt but can´t speak it. I wish I could speak it....

  3. I mean these people who have lived here for years and still refuse to learn the language simply because they don't have to.

Yes, they should learn the language of the land where they wanted to live.

But even if you only on vacation you should learn a little of the language. It will be easyer for both sides.....:)

  4. i think you all know my feelings on this subject. get rossetta stone and learn english, or take the next plane home!

I can understand you, but if you ever like to travel in any foreign country, DON´T FORGET TO LEARN THEIR LANGUAGE !!!!! You don´t may count on it that the people there speak english ;) (Why they should?;))

  5. Yes a very beautifull place. The horses are living in the Everglades here in the "south". ( very, very muddy.... Too much rain over the winter...) And the gators are working as stepping-stones for us humans..... :003: It´s okay when we have low temperatures.......but when it becomes warmer we´re better changing the grazing-land.......before the gators will awake..... I think....
