Least Favorite: Big bashes/receptions and those weddings where it seems like half the town stands up with the bride/groom. 2. Wedding Gifts: Do you buy from the registry, find something else, or give money? Depends on the couple, and also if it's a group gift (buying with coworkers for example) or going it alone. 3. This morning I'm feeling like a sleepy cougar so I'll say Paolo Nutini, that young and adorable Scottish singer/songwriter. 5. Just watched 8 of the 9 sections available; as is the case often, part 1 is already down. Live footage includes Brown Sugar, Midnight Rambler, and a spot with Stevie Wonder. You'll also see Andy Warhol, Truman Capote, and Mick Jagger bored to tears in a car somewhere down south. The rock 'n' roll antics are tiresome, then sad; I guess I've seen too many of those "Behind The Music" documentaries and start to wonder who in these clips is alive, dead, or suffered as a result of their youthful foolishness/enthusiasm/both. And I really didn't need to see Keith and his girlfriend passed out being ignored by others in the room. The film is blurry, overexposed, and sound isn't synched to movement; you can shoot better on your home camera these days. The Stones should give it an appropriate rating, send it to DVD, and they'll make money on it... We already got over being shocked by the antics a long time ago. Yes, I could...though I'm pretty sure that most of my friends aren't the surprise party type. They'd rather have a great dinner at a great restaurant or something similar.

Yep, if you google "Michael Vick Dog Tshirt" or something similar there are a few t-shirts/sweaters, as well as a "Michael Vick Dog Chew Toy" (that's a Michael Vick figure for dogs to chew on. And a couple of people have blogged about whether it's ethical for people to make money from the situation. I'm voting no, and think it's just not right.

So sad. I wasn't aware he was ill. He is well worth learning about, Farmers. As he aged his voice got more gravelly, sounding a bit like Tom Waits in that respect. I hardly ever pull up the iTunes program but this morning have it up and am listening to Willie and his acoustic trio "Live In Berlin." Rock & roll, blues, touches of Spanish influence, and a bit of New Orleans all rolled into one. Or pick up something old from Mink DeVille. Good stuff.

John Hughes, director of classic teen movies from the 1980s and 1990s, has died of a heart attack. The "Breakfast Club," Sixteen Candles" and "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" director was 59. TMZ.com broke the story late this afternoon. Other sources, including the Associated Press, later confirmed the news. Hughes was reportedly taking a morning walk with his family in New York City when the heart attack hit. According to movie Web site IMDb.com, Hughes was born in Lansing, Mich. in 1950 and grew up in the suburbs of Chicago. Hughes was responsible for a group of 1980s and 1990s films that helped define the culture of the era. Well, I just came back from having a free massage at the massage school. I'm pretty much ruined for getting anything accomplished for an hour or so. Then to the library...and laundry...and cleaning, etc.

Oops - never mind. Of course, as soon as I posted the above, I found the band... The Travelers. Look for the drop down of bands, select "country." I really don't get why they entered this in the country section of the competition at all. And I can see why they're not in the semi-finals, too.

Oh my my... The internet connection was not working when I got back from Cozy's, nor most of this day. Thank goodness there's a Starbucks a couple of blocks away. Notes to self: 1) Start fund for ZZ so he can come here and surreptitiously capture one of these shows: DK's for everyone! 2) Don't forget to charge camera batteries before a big night. So Cozy's was one rockin' and rollin' bluesy thing. I met many Farmers - hello, thank you - can't remember everyone. I was surprised at how small the bar is - lived up to the name of "Cozy's." From the pictures you see on The Farm, it looks like the band is on a raised stage, and they are, but it's one small step - 5 inches? The band barely squeezes onto the stage. And with the front row of tables is almost nestled right on the stage,it's almost like having Mike Campbell playing in your large living room. Almost. Maybe it's your backyard, and you're at the grill flipping burgers to share with your friends. Or maybe it's your favorite local bar. Small, intimate, cozy. Some tips if you're going to come: stay at the Days Inn; it was fine, has a nice pool, and there are plenty of restaurants/shops nearby. You can even walk to Cozy's; I did, and some generous Farmers gave me a ride back to the hotel. Stop about half way between Days Inn and Cozy's and get yourself some frozen yogurt at Menchies - tastes great in the heat of the summer. A dinner reservation at Cozy's guarantees a seat up front; the four tables nearest the stage were occupied by savvy Farmers. Dinner reservations also net you an attentive waitress and open tab throughout the evening. If you don't have a car, bring cash for cabs; the twenty minute ride from the Van Nuys train station to the Days Inn was $30. Brief musical comments... Hammerheads sounded power pop/punky, entertaining lead singer with a silent and shy Darian Campbell (such an echo of his dad, but you already know that.) Romeo Delta grungy, scrunchy rock and youthful blues with a far more animated & singing Darian. Dave's a blast to watch, too, and darn it all, they're cute. Wish I was twenty years younger or more of a prowling cougar! The DK's - bluesy, dirty in the best sense of the word, like "Dirty Water" by the Standells. A treat to hear Mike campbell sing almost every song. Sheer delight to experience the interplay between all players - humorous, intimate. Loved the glowing devil horns. I can see why Mike seems reluctant to record or otherwise get this band involved with "the industry." Just brilliant. I want more! So maybe you're contemplating a special trip out to see the DK's in the future. By the time I return home next week, I will have endured four plane rides, three hotels, six cab rides, a business conference, several long walks, two trips along Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner route and a week away from home. Was it worth it? Oh hell yes!

One extremely long day, two plane rides, and one beautiful ride on the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner from San Diego & I've arrived at the Days Inn. Whew! Must rest up for tonight. PM for room number, etc. P.S. I actually posed this at 4:05pm PST...
