MaryJanes2ndLastDance got a reaction from Mudcrutch in I Feel Like A Forgotten Song
Finding Out----great rocker, never played live in concert.
When The Time Comes---catchy riff, good heartfelt lyrics, a sense of hope and purpose and optimism.
You And I Will Meet Again---perfect mix of pop-rock, psychedelic, and heartfelt lyrics. Good imagery too. "Red winged hawk is circling..."
It Ain't Nothin' To Me----unique call and response song with lots of attitude, exploding into a heartfelt chorus.
All Or Nothin'---one of their heaviest riffs
Something Good Coming----just heartbreakingly sweet and gentle and all the more powerful for it.
The Criminal Kind---slinky riff and attitude really work well here
The Same Old You---another song with attitude and some great playing, a sweet midtempo groove
Luna----another unique song of theirs, simple, moody, atmospheric.
Fault Lines----what a groove!
I'll stop there for now.
cheers

MaryJanes2ndLastDance got a reaction from CrescentMoonFever in I Feel Like A Forgotten Song
I like this song a lot and am also glad it made it onto Full Moon Fever. The opening sounds like:
The start of some old Bela Lugosi horror movie and/or the intro to a cheesy but fun local tv show horror host, showing bad horror movies most people have never seen. That's not why I like the song, it's just what i think of sometime. I thought this could've been a real showcase for Benmont...oh well.
Anyway, great end to a great album!
Peace!

MaryJanes2ndLastDance reacted to IndigoGypsy13 in Prayers for Tom Petty - 1950-2017
Man.. This is a rough one. I have been crying off and on all week.
I feel like I was lucky to see him as many times as I did.
2003: I saw him perform with Stevie Nicks at the Concert for Artist Rights benefit show for the Recording Artists Coalition.
2014: Red Rocks for the Hypnotic Eye Tour.
2016: I really got lucky! Again, to see him with Mudcrutch, at what was likely the smallest venue of the tour.. Humphrys by the Bay in San Diego, with maybe 1000-1100 people?
2017: May 29th for the 40th Anniversary tour. That magical thunderstorm that allowed for the extra break and guitar issues at the May 30th Red Rocks show. Swingin', Oh Carol and the Benmont Boogie.
It's hard to find the words to describe why it hurts so much. Just when I think that I have them, nope. Only tears and a great appreciation to a man who gave me the soundtrack to my life.
I am slowly able to listen to more and more of his music. I never know when that one tune will play that hits me in the gut. I am still not able to listen to some.
I am choking up just typing this. I can only imagine that this is how people felt when Lennon was killed.
Thank you for the soundtrack of my life Tom!
We all got Lucky, babe!

Pure speculation: Down the road they'll individually be musicians to whatever degree suits them, playing on records etc. Maybe Benmont will release another solo album. Maybe Mike will do more with the Dirty Knobs and his own music. As TPATH, no, I don't think they would ever try to have a replacement singer or anything like that. Guest appearances and their own music, I could see happening. Even a one-off tribute to Tom show with guest singers and musicians, a one-off event, tastefully done.

MaryJanes2ndLastDance got a reaction from nekolennon in Thoughts on Tom Petty
Thanks for sharing, I liked this:
"Tom Petty is the great 20th century transcendentalist poet.
The truth that his songs communicate more than anything else is the possibility of a transcendent moment even if it’s fleeting, and even if the life you’ll return to is tough and unsatisfying. That is what is most American about him— not the drawl, or the Byrds-go-to-Memphis hybrid— it’s the belief that a moment alone in nature can bring you a epiphany that connects you to everyone.
That’s what a Tom Petty concert WAS at its best— we went there to hear songs that told us that our small, individual moments of joy mattered because it was the common ground in the room: the quest for small, individual moments of joy."

You never know but part of me thinks screw the 40th tour. Should've just postponed it or just done one special show (or three at the Hollywood Bowl). This would explain some of the off vibe or energy seeming to come from the stage at certain points. Jeez! If the poor guy was using a golf cart and in serious pain, it wasn't worth it. I respect his drive to make the audience happy though. Very sad...

MaryJanes2ndLastDance got a reaction from Szafira in Now What? Your pick!
No way, it's Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, forget it, you can't replace someone like that, let alone after 40 years! That's not even on their radar. And even a tribute concert is just my wild speculation, it might not even happen and really, who cares at this point? The poor man's body is still alive, who knows what may yet happen.
In principle though, yeah, I understand, personal chemistry is never to be underestimated with bands.
Anyway, that's it. They had a pretty amazing 40 year run, came across classy, much beloved. I'm sure record companies will do what they do in situations like this but as musicians, well, I'm just repeating myself.
take care

My opinion is to give yourself some more time, postpone the appointment, you don't want to rush into something like this. Good luck regardless.

Thoughts off the top of my head:
---Layout, very easy to read, no annoying ads or unwanted graphics. No big blocky design the way a lot of webpages do.
--Considering a lot of people just think of TPATH's as the greatest hits, that this place exists, named after the pre and post TPATH is pretty good in and of itself!
--If TPATH's 40th tour hasn't invigorated this place maybe a new album/Wildflowers tour will. Going back over old topics seems it was pretty active back in 08.
--I think the conversation is interesting and fun, you got people sharing live recordings and from what I understand people have even met in person from this board.
--Overall I think it's successful, navigating and reading about different topics is easy, good search function and a high tolerance for a variety of opinion and even critiques of the band. I took a peek at the facebook fan page and when someone criticized the set list, they got dogpiled by people. Here there's all kinds of reasonable discussions.
--People here also post a lot about the quality of the albums, how they were recorded, what they would have preferred, what they think of songs, not just how they are played or the sound quality but what they mean to them, if you enjoy TPATH's music I don't know of a better place. You've got the Tom Petty site I can't recall right now that has the great database of articles. I guess you got Tom Petty Nation for more real time happenings related to the band and shows and fans and this place for in-depth conversations on the music. Where else can someone share opinions or argue with a hardcore fan from Germany?
Anyway, I may have more later on this, I may not, but overall, thanks you and whomever else is in charge that made this an interesting place.
cheers

If it happens, bring some guitars and bongos and have a little jam session as well.

MaryJanes2ndLastDance reacted to Miami Steve in Prayers for Tom Petty - 1950-2017
Like a lot of kids then (and still) my first exposure to music was from old Beatles records. I was completely under their spell to the point that I had all their records before I even thought about buying an album by anyone else. I listened to all the latest records on the radio and had my favorites but could they make whole albums of great songs like the Beatles? I wasn't convinced but when New Wave came along I thought maybe this is my music, not my older brothers music but something directed at kids like me. The Cars were really cool, they had the clothes and the sound, and we got a kick out of all the double entendres. There was Blondie, with Debbie Harry who set my teenage brain on fire. Cheap Trick were like your buddies down the street with a garage band. And then there was Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. They dressed like us. They talked like us. At a time when going to see ''The Song Remains the Same'' at the midnight matinee was a teenage ritual and you heard the singer introduce a "song about hope" followed by 10 minutes of hippie mumbo jumbo, Tom Petty sang about hope in a real and tangible way. "This old town just seems so hopeless" was followed by an explosion of hope in words and music in a single verse. For a kid who lived in a town that you didn't live in so much as you grew up and left, it was a revelation. Everyone knows "the waiting is the hardest part," the sentiment has probably been around forever but nobody ever came right out and said it. When Tom sang it was like he grabbed you by the shoulders, shook you and looked you straight in the eye and told you what was going on. I think that's why his songs have held up over time. They still have meaning to 54-year-old me as they did to 16-year-old me and will continue being a reassuring presence in my life like an old friend. Thank you Tom for the music and memories, may they live on forever.

I haven't said much, cuz I'm still in shock! My prayers go out to the entire Petty "Family". Very few people have influenced my life besides my parents and grandparents. All the rest were musicians, from The Beatles to Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers. Their dedication to life and music are unsurpassed. I am so glad that I saw every concert I could over the years and have those memories. Without Tom, we wouldn't be here now. Because of Tom, I met a lot of you and we had the greatest of times. We have to keep going and keep the TPATH legend alive, it's the least we can do. God Bless Tom Petty.
