Interestingly, "You Wreck Me" dropped out of the 2010 tour pretty early on. When it was played at the first few shows, it was in its usual spot as the first song of the encore. When it got dropped, however, "Runnin' Down a Dream" got moved from being the final song of the main set to the first song of the encore. This precedent was set in 2008 because "You Wreck Me" was the tour opener on that tour. In 2010, that pattern continued: "Refugee" closed the man set and "Runnin'" started the encore.

I'm surprised, thanks for sharing. I realize I didn't even know there was a 2010 tour or forgot it completely. I even saw some shows without American Girl which is also unusual.

    cheers

  2. To bring this loosely back to Wildflowers, from this point on songs like You Wreck Me, Honey Bee, Zero From Outer Space become the exception. I realize that Echo wasn't geared to be a rocking album but maybe there are some more fast tempo numbers with a good riff waiting to be unearthed. Wildflowers is off a mood that continues on, I'd say all the way till Hypnotic Eye, though there were throwbacks like I Should Have Known It.

I wonder if You Wreck Me became a concert regular because the crowd loved it or Tom did or both. It even showed up at residencies, I don't know if there's a show after the WF tour where they didn't play it. I like the song and depending on my mood can take it or leave because I've listened to it so many times on live recordings. That said, it's pretty amazing how Tom came up with something memorable using very basic chords and simple lyrics. I guess one could say that of his whole career, it's pretty incredible.

    cheers

No relatives in Cleveland. I'll have to rent or stay at a hotel!!!!!!!!

See if they can give you a medical discount/bulk rate since you'll be there for so long. I once had to get a room fast to help someone out for a medical reason and they kindly discounted my stay, thank God! It was a big and much appreciated help.

    cheers

Radiation will be 5 days a week, so I'll have to find a place to stay in Cleveland for 6 weeks and come home on weekends.

Jeez! Do you have relatives in Cleveland who can help or what are you doing? Renting a place? Good luck with all of this, Nurk.

"Soundstage" DVD, it was with a sense of crushing disappointment, having absolutely zero time for them.

I know the feeling generally but in that case, I was just excited to get the dvd in the mail and have more live music to watch.

Don't be so sure. "In my way" meaning that I did do it the online fan community discussions way.. as many of us did. Not always overly eloquent at that. And rather futile, yes.

Funny you should say that, see, a while ago I did compose a letter to send to TPATH but never worked up the courage to do so. I tried to be as reasonable as possible. I realize it's moot now but here it is:

    Deer Toms,

I am been a long time fan of your band the Hartmakers, they rock and put the rock in rock-n-roll.

Anytime i worked out a lot I'd say to the weight bench, You wrecked me baby! While laeing on top of it. And hugging it. I'd wipe it down after licking it too. Everyone thought I was cool but too cool they stopped talking to me; it's good to be king.

Pleas play the following songs from all your albums and every different one too. (LIST OF SONGS: Refugee, Running Down Dreams, Benmont's Booger, You And I Will Meet Again, Zombie zoo (twice, once at the beginning of show and once at end but you can decide where I dont' want to order you around ha ha but if you want to sing it and point into the audience and say "this one's 4 u boss," that is okay. I'm the boss you're pointing too. Your boss. But it's cool if you just think of me as a friend.

More songs: Only the good ones. This makes the show best for audience and the people. Also maybe try not to upstroke so much on guitar but downstroke more. The cupcakes I included are blueberry, pop tart flavor, and mystery flavor. They are 4 Fred. You know, Fred the  siyche...spyce...psychedle ..the dragon who what lives in your tree but yuo can eat some too. I recommend all three.

Your boss (not really but ifyou think of me that way cool),

Imagine Lenny Kravitz performing his entire "Let Love Rule" at full blast,

I've a vague recollection of that song, I think, or one of his big radio singles and can kinda hear a bit of it before the false ending but for me it's just an interesting background vocal.

You Come Through actually feels like a melding of country and funk, I think it's catchy!

But you know, this place is made up of differing opinions.

    cheers

It's a horror show, just not good in any way, IMO.

    That made me laugh.

Lenny Kravitz performing his entire "Let Love Rule", vocals and all the instruments, while "Something Good Coming" plays almost inaudibly in the background - and you've essentially got "You Come Through".   Who knows what the original track from Petty was even supposed to be?

I always thought this was one of those interesting experiments the band did from time to time, where they don't sound quite like they normally do.

But I really don't know anything about the recording of this song or whatnot so I can't say as to Kravitz's impact, other than I really like the finished track a lot. Maybe you'd have liked the track had they performed it live minus what you call the Krativz spray-painting ha ha ha.

That is, the basic structure of the song you'd enjoy, if it could've been actually separated from Kravitz's studio influence.

    13 minutes ago, TheSameOldDrew said:

plus Lenny Kravitz adding his own vocals and all those other instruments, with Lenny then mixing it all himself.     It's essentially 90% Lenny Kravitz and 10% Tom Petty.  Or maybe even 95%/5%.

When I've a chance I'll give it another listen, but regardless, yeah I still think the song is very good regardless of whatever Kravitz did or because of it, who knows?

Maybe someone else who knows more about this track will chime in.

Anyway, thanks for explaining why you don't care for it.

    cheers

    So, back off.

Maybe this will clear a few things up.

Whatever I think of Ac/dc as a band, I'm sorry that the poor guy suffered like that, and can respect him soldiering on with a tour. I could've picked any band really to make my point, which was meant to be a light-hearted one, which is that most band nerds, hardcore fans, whatever you want to call 'em get hung up over the set list. If it came across like I was picking on them or making light of what he went through, that wasn't my intent.

Here's some set list complaints about the Foo Fighters from a quick search below.

    Peace!

    Disappointed

    Discussion/Question

Let me preface this by saving I absolutely love the Foo Fighters....

Went to both Wrigley shows and was super disappointed that they played the exact same show for both nights. Same setlist, same jams, a little difference on the cover songs they did but pretty much identical shows. With all the great songs they have, they couldn’t have switched the shows up a little? (Ex. No “Stacked Actors”, “Generator”, “Low” even “DOA”)

    Just curious anyone else’s thoughts...

    Published Feb 05, 2010

Back in November, we told you about how an AC/DC fan club was pleading with the Aussie rockers to mix up their Black Ice World Tour setlist instead of playing the same songs, in the same order, night in and night out. A petition asking the band to change up their shows began soon after, but now lead singer Brian Johnson is firing back, saying that AC/DC fans need to relax and just treat the concerts as "a bit of fun."

But Johnson didn't stop there, according to News.com.au [via Digital Spy]. He proceeded to lay into the fans behind the petition (and imagine he's saying this in his patented, sandpaper-voiced rocker yowl), telling the publication that the fans in question "may cheer at the concerts, they may go home happy, but they only came to hear 'Thunderstruck.' They don't eat, sleep and shit AC/DC like we do. Fuck them!"

Now the curious thing about this is Johnson is paraphrasing the open letter AC/DC fans sent to the band back in November, ripping the "eat, sleep and shit" line verbatim from what was posted by the concerned fans on the band's official fan site.

And Johnson continued his anti-fan tirade, saying, "There are a few cocky fans. A lot of people now with the computers, they sit on their fat asses in their house somewhere going, 'Oh, they played that song last night, they should change it.' Well, bollocks to you. I don't think they realize changing a song in a set now is not the same as it used to be. When you include all the lighting guys, the stagehands, the technicians - there are 85 guys who have to know what's happening if you change a song. We're still doing some of the really old stuff. We're not daft. We realize the fans like the old songs. But boy, it ticks me off when people start petitions. We're not a political party, we're just a rock'n'roll band out for a bit of fun."

Now we love AC/DC as much as the next red-blooded followers of all things hard rockin', and we also admit that maybe AC/DC fans are a bit zealous about the band's live shows, but it sounds as if Johnson's got his trademark flat cap on way too tight.

Still, we werent the ones sending that letter.  Shame on us. That would be the real fan to do, arguably. Not that I didn't try, in my way, to write that letter a thousand times, but formally, I never did.

I don't know though. I would hope the band took from the letter how much these fans love their music and not just Dirty Deeds cause it's on the radio a thousand times a week but the ones people like me have never heard of. It's possible they took it that way but at the same time, could've figured it's not any of their business or don't spend the money if you don't like the show etc. And there could be on some level, concern that this opens the door for the fans to start making even more detailed demands, the letter wasn't doing that but they could just feel like acknowledging it was opening that door.

But, from my super-limited perspective on the band, I could see them as just ignoring it, may be even being embarrassed on the fans behalf for not having something else going on in their lives. But I don't know.

As for TPATH, I don't know, if Mike or Benmont couldn't get this to change, what would some fans achieve? And I'm not knocking efforts, just that I doubt it would make any impact, especially when weighed against all the fans who pay money for their tickets and rock out regardless of what's played or how many times it's been played before.

Ah heck with it. Instead of waiting for someone to find ac/dc's response I went and looked it up myself since I posted the darn thing in the first place.

Preach. First show I ever went to was that 02 Summer Tour and thank God there's a bootleg of it of half way decent quality because the version they play of "Too Much Ain't Enough" is not only great, but rare. Only played it that tour and on the 01 tour.

I'm glad you got to see them and the song and even have a bootleg of it! What show was it?

    cheers

"Little Maggie" is great. Mike's mandolin playing is great and it's nice to see Scott sing. The band is more than Tom

Oh no, hearing Little Maggie once was enough but I gave it multiple listens but it's just awful. And I like mandolin playing too but that couldn't save it. I agree with your last point thought, it's definitely more than Tom. Some of my favorite moments from the Echo tour were when Mike led the band through surf instrumentals. And Ron's bass solo spotlight in Two Men Talking from Lucca an Manheim in '12.c

    cheers

The AC/DC fans were unhappy that the concerts had the same songs in the same order for every show - of the same tour.

Taking a guess, I doubt there was much variation as they went on from tour to tour.

    27 minutes ago, TheSameOldDrew said:

Frankly as a fan attending an individual concert on a tour, I wouldn't care if they played the same setlist in New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago, LA, etc. as long as we're talking within the same tour.

I think it's more interesting generally speaking, when a band mixes it up night to night, giving each city they play in a unique experience. I figure this would keep it fresh for the musicians as well and offer an opportunity for deep cuts to be played. But I also like when a band expands on their songs in concert, otherwise I can just stay home and hear the songs at my leisure. This isn't a factory job where if someone does something out of a routine they risk injury and damage to machines as well as messing up other's work; it's a rock-n-roll show! Open a show with Free Fallin' one night and encore with it the next. Let loose! B)

    31 minutes ago, TheSameOldDrew said:

The problem I had with most of the TPATH tours after 1995, was that there wasn't a lot of variation in the setlist even from tour to tour.

I agree. Didn't nearly every main set end with I Should Have Known It into Refugee and Running? For sure the last two for the most part.

    33 minutes ago, TheSameOldDrew said:

So TPATH fans had a different issue than AC/DC fans, although many TPATH fans also wanted more variety within the same tour.

I've a feeling ac/dc tours were pretty similar as well, though I could be wrong.

The point being, hardcore fans of a band will fill the internet with set list complaints, regardless of night to night or tour to tour, ha haha.

    cheers

Carol - not a good song, and they played it far too much (51 times)

Agreed, never understood the appeal of this song though it was a welcome change at Red Rocks on their last tour.

Around & Around - "ok" but not a highlight for me, and already covered numerous times by others, most famously The Rolling Stones.

I don't even recall what it sounds like but when I did listen to it, never made an impact.

    Agreed.

    I like this one.

Call Me The Breeze (32 times) and I'd Like To Love You Baby

Breeze I'll listen to if I'm in the mood for Benmont's solos but the song doesn't do anything for me. Same with I'd Like To Love.

    6 hours ago, TheSameOldDrew said:

Knockin' On Heaven's Door - snooze.

I like this one. The sparseness of it appeals to me and it's short. I like the version from Red Rocks from '02; that's a very good show overall.

    6 hours ago, TheSameOldDrew said:

Ballad of Easy Rider - no thanks,

No appeal. No interest in Mcguinn. I get why they'd play it with their connections but don't care for it.

    6 hours ago, TheSameOldDrew said:

Lucille - nope, leave the Little Richard covers to McCartney.  Little Maggie (30 times) - who cares?

" - who cares?" Hahaha ha. First, Lucille, no interest in it. I guess if Benmont or Mike takes an extended solo I'll listen for that but c'mon. They had so many underplayed TPATH songs and they fill the set with stuff like this? I don't get it. Well, Shelter and others have made arguments and explanations which make sense so I guess I do get it. I just don't like it...!  And Little Maggie? Terrible. I remember purchasing the Fillmore show, High Grass Dogs on vhs, and my excitement slowly dissipating, especially during this long mellow segment. I think Scott sang this right? Awful. I didn't like it musically, didn't like his voice, didn't like any of it! Terrible. One of the worst covers they did and contributed to the overall feeling of a let down with that video release. The Hamburg Docks show is much better from that tour. Little Maggie. Oh no, some kind of weird blue grass song. Awful.

    cheers

    you gotta like that, surely?

I like 13 Days quite a bit, something about the slow groove of it and the weary inflection in Tom's voice work well together. It's got a bit of a doomed march feel to it which I enjoy.

Travelin' Light is pretty good, You Are My Sunshine/Can't Get no sunshine is good, I used to like Louie Louie and Shout but they wore off, there's probably a few others I like but overall I'd have preferred hearing a TPATH original to a cover. Oh, their jamming with Hooker at the Fillmore was good.

    cheers

Jaguar & Thunderbird and basically all their Chuck Berry songs. ❤️

It's okay. I listened to it early on when I found a copy of the live lp from the 70s at a record convention but it wasn't as good as Luna or Dog on the Run, I liked the upbeat energy but overall, it's not something I particularly care for. I guess Bye Bye Johnny is all right, I like the playing on it but again, not a fan. I recognize Chuck Berry's influence through all of rock and roll with his playing more than I listen to the man's music. I probably heard more guitar players play his signature lines than the originals.

Take Out Some Insurance sung in Gainesville

I don't even recall what Take out some insurance sounds like. I'll go listen. Oh boy, I couldn't even make it through that. Oh no. How could they play that song when so many of their own were neglected? Luna alone is superior to that and is more of a quiet song if they wanted to cool things off for a bit. The playing is good but no, those types of generic sounding  (groundbreaking at their time? I don't know) tunes don't do anything for me. I guess they work as a simple framework for Benmont or Mike to solo over which is the only selling point; and I like basic simple songs but I didn't like this at all.

    cheers

Psychotic Reaction - you gotta like that, surely? ❤️

Yes, I enjoy that one quite a bit, not just because of the novelty of Stan singing but the energy the band played it with; I was actually pleased to hear the live show from the Last Dj tour where they played it again; though the Take The Highway version is probably my favorite for nostalgia reasons. I like how one part of the song swaggers along and the other part goes into hyper mode, fun to see Stan switch from one gear to the next, and of course, I enjoy hearing Mike rake the pick against the strings making that wonderful sound during the fast part.

    cheers
